Ash "shitcanned" himself.

Milo was an excellent broadcaster in his time.  What we hear today isn't representative of how good used to be.

For starters, he had a terrible radio voice.

I listened to the new guys during the Washington game and really liked what I heard.  My money is on Bret Dolan eventually winning the play-by-play job, and Dave Raymond doing the color commentary.  I think you'll like what you hear.

no, petey. voice had nada to do with it.

these guys represent Draytie on a tangent. they'd better do well, and i expect they'll get lots of chances.

A bit too critical, was Ashby? I agree on the voice thing with Pete, though... not a voice for radio.

My SWAG is that he didn't get the PBP job and got into it with management, thus showing himself the door.  But that's no more than a SWAG.

Perhaps, but his voice was ill-suited for radio.  Drove lots of listeners crazy.

What's your theory on how Ashby 'shitcanned' himself, Jim?

Personally, I did not like his voice at all, but his information was just fine. Kind of a film negative of Milo, now.

Most whom recognize that his voice was ill-suited for radio.  Likewise, most here recognize that Milo has a wonderful radio voice, yet none are sad he's being phased out.

That said, you're probably right that Ashby's voice had nothing to do with his not being re-signed.  If it really mattered to Drayton he never would have gotten the job in the first place.

His voice was pretty monotone, but I liked his analysis.  He didn't hesitate to criticize, but I never thought his criticism was unfair or overly harsh.

Ash's voice wasn't great, and I agree the new guys sound better.  However, I think Ash's analysis stemming from his familiarity with the team and the opponents will be missed.  Back to the original post though, I listened to a little bit of the ballgame today and Milo was terrible - not from a "calling the game" stand point, but from a "every cheesy joke I can think of" stand point.  Ugh.  I hope its only because it is spring training.  However, the line about not going to Greg Zaun's super bowl party because he didn't want to get arrested was pretty funny.

Milo doesn't know it's spring training.  He thinks these games count.  On Monday, he mentioned that the big lead over the Nationals would afford Brandon Backe the opportunity to work on his stuff.

I've only been able to listen to a couple games at any length.  I think both the new people are good at describing the action of the game.  I knew at all times where the ball was, where the runners were, how many outs, balls and strikes, who was up, who was pitching.  Their cadence and inflection were good, the midwestern twang only grated a couple times.  Because they haven't gotten to know the players, the call is pretty generic.  That will change in time.  One of them (?) said, when Drayton asked whether he'd met Wandy Rodriguez yet (who Drayton really likes, mostly because he's cocky, and won 10 games last season), he said, "probably, I've met about 70 people in the last few days.

Milo has lost his mind.  He's playing the grizzled, crotchety veteran for all it's worth.  I think he thinks he's hazing the new guys.

Deciphering Milo's PBP is like transcribing Stephen Hawking,,,except with better intonation. Only Astro fans know what he's saying...and even then not always.

I was listening to a game a couple of years ago with a friend (Angel fan) and Milo made the call: "...ground ball!...right field!...safe!!". He looks over at me with his head cocked over like a basset hound. I laughed and said "double to right".

Nowadays even I have difficulty understanding him. Thinking of getting the MLB TV thingey.

Anyway, I'll never forget the look on my friend's face.
He breezed him, one more time!

I decided pretty early on that I much prefer Raymond's comfortable, easy-chair sound to that of Dolan's I'm-a-broadcaster-and-here's-my-voice voice.  Raymond almost sounds like B.J. Hunnicut, as if he's just talking without "affecting."  That's what I like.  And he and Dolan both know how to control their calls with the proper amount of excitement, clarity and range.  Range is something Ashby never mastered, which made his play-by-play difficult for me to listen to.  Funny, too, since he had several years training as the sportscaster at Channel 39 prior to the Astros gig.

Dolan would be fine if he would just speak into the microphone the way he talks to his buddies off the air (I'm guessing).  No one, absolutely no one, says "we go to the 5th inning" or "that makes the count 2 and 2" the way he does and makes it sound authentic.  I suspect it's a habit he picked up somewhere along the way trying to give his delivery more depth (just like when people change the way they pronounce the letter "s" for some reason), but he really doesn't need it.  His voice is fine until he finishes a sentence.

I haven't listened to the new guys enough to know which is which., but one of them(the lesser of the 2 in my opinion) has damn near the exact same speaking voice as Ashby's
Remember Jesus Alou being called out of the 1st base coaching box to pinch-hit a double vs. the Reds in '79 I think, to win a crucial game, and he patted Morgan on top of the head (ala Benny Hill w/the little bald guy) and Little Joe got pissed.....yeah,that was great.

I thought the same thing; I did enjoy Ash?s Banter with Milo.  Did anyone catch the new guys raging on Milo?  Claiming he was probably already catching the 'Early Bird' dinner @ 2:30.  Earlier in the same game they were talking about how Fat Bengie Molina Looked, after he hit a single he was pulled for a pitch-runner, they followed up with, "yeah that?s a great idea coach, get him out of the sun as soon as possible".  I was rolling.

pinch runner....

Glad to here the new guys are loosening up a bit, they were a little boring when I first heard them...its hard for me to pick up 790AM in Austin so I haven't heard much.
