In each of the past several seasons I wonder if  this will be the season that Redding unscrambles his brain and actually becomes an effective pitcher.  At some point during those seasons (usually very early in the season), I am reminded that the guy is destined to become the patron saint of lost causes.

So anybody care to wager how many days it will take him to get sent back to the minors after his first MLB relief appearance?

He did hurt his shoulder last year and tried to pitch through it ... no telling how long it might have been bothering him.  Remember, he did actually pitch pretty well a few years ago (opposite 15GWJRob).  I agree that he's a head case, but I also think there may have been some physical issues as well.  I really hope he does get it together sometime for someone.

I love how Redding falling short of expectations automatically make him some sort of nutcase. Maybe he's just not as good as everyone once believed. His once dominating stuff is anything but these days. You're not going to get away with a 90mph flat fastball regardless of whether or not you're a nutcase.

It wasn't just his failure to fulfill expectations. Even a greater factor was the pure gold that often flowed from his mouth, often at the most inopportune time. Instead of keeping his mouth shut and allow others to speculate about his sanity, he opened it and removed all doubt. I'm sure there are others around here who could recount the frivolity better than me.

The only feeling I ever got out of his comments was that he was a genuine prick that couldn't get along with all of his teammates. Doesn't make him a nutcase. Doesn't mean it's the reason he didn't perform well in the major leagues.

What I saw was a guy who wasn't ready back in 2001 when he was first called up and who's stuff slowly deteriorated from there for whatever reason. Watching him last year some games topping out at 87 suggests the problem is probably physical and not mental.

I don't think Redding was a nutjob.  I think Redding is a guy who never had to deal with adversity up until the point he was called up to the majors.

He was dominant in AA (his first time through) but the book on him has always been that he had big problems harnassing his emotions.  Gettin squeezed? Shortstop boots a double play ball? Redding will fold.

I have no way of knowing if he's injured or not, but I tend to believe that the loss in velocity was due to a) not having the greatest work ethic in the world and b) trying to get by with breaking shit and focusing on location to the point that he couldn't throw his fastball anymore.

The guy was basically uncoachable once he reached the majors.  From what I've heard, no one was sorry to see him go.

None of that made him batshit crazy necessarily.

There's no way Guillen will put up with that crap. See: Wunch, Kelly and Marte, Damaso. Still, with Don Cooper as pitching coach, the Sox may get a few servicable innings out of Redding. I see him destined to fill a spot in AAA, though. The Sox have 6 starters already, and unless the pitching staff gets struck down by major injuries, there's no way Redding will beat out McCarthy for a roster spot.

I think Redding has serious personality flaws/problems.

If/when Redding ever finds himself, he probably won't be there anymore.  Or, as Roy Blount, Jr. or someone once said, he got his shit together one time, but then he couldn't lift it.
