I saw the Game of the Century.  I was a child, about 8 I think, but I remember it vividly.

And, I watched that thing they had on TV tonight.

And I cannot honestly say which was better.  Glad I don't have to choose.

Opps, time for another cold one...

Best Rose Bowl ever, and I'm not just saying that a UT grad.   Seriously, this type of a game for the national championship is hard to top.

Oh, and Vince Young is the man.

Congrats to UT and Vince Young.  An awesome performance.  I have to admit I was pulling for USC but there's no question Texas earned that one!  An instant classic.

Texas played their worst game of the year and still whupped us, not that whupping the aggies this year was any special accomplishment.

I have pics of the tower I took after the baseball national championship this past summer and I'll be there when they light the tower orange again.

Man, what a game what a game what a game!!!!  2005/(first 4 days)2006 was the best sports year of my life.  Astros make it to the World Series for the first time ever and UT football wins the National Championship.

Tackling would have been nice.  I counted 2 tackles, from either team, the entire 2nd half.  UT had them both, on the 3rd and 4th down plays.

Looked like a track meet to me.  USC scored on their 1st four possessions in the 2nd half and didn't stop until the stand on 3rd and 4th down.  To me, those were the plays of the game. Whoever put up a defense was going to win.  UT punted on their 1st possession and they were off to the races too.  Every bowl game I watched it was obvious the teams hadnt played for a month.

Some yes.  Some no.  We should all know there are fans who are never happy.  I've been watching Brown since his first year at Tulane.  There isn't a better recruiter and motivator in college football.  Fans tap into the notion that he's not a great on-field manager, and he's not.  Brown's strength is that he can out talent teams.  He'll just assemble a more talented team and beat you with the talent.  You saw last night that Young is more talented than USC's defense.  If Young returns for his senior season UT will be the pre-season #1.

As far as I'm concerned, and I'm not a UT alum, Brown deserves a free pass today from everyone.
Goin' for a bus ride.

On what occasions do you light the tower, and what is the #1?  I root for Tulane and Texas A&M; we never have the occasion to light anything.

There is an off campus (unsanctioned) Bonfire, but as far as on-campus, it'll (likely) never be reinstated.

The current administration won't even talk about it until the litigation pending is all complete.

Unaffiliated and unofficial.  Last I heard, the City of Bryan yanked the permit for 2005, preventing them from lighting our "Burning Desire".  I won't go on any further on the subject as there are alot of differing views on Bonfire and mine would just be one more on the pile, either way.

They didn't revoke the permit.  The City wouuldn't stand by the permit they gave because of the burn ban.

Bonfire was lit this year. A fine for burning it was assessed and paid.

Cool, my brother, a fellow Ag, had told me the permit was revoked.  I was surprised as, to date, the permits have been granted and figured someone was playing politics or they had finally decided to quash it altogether.  Thanks for the info.

By the way, a burn ban is a good reason to prevent lighting it.  Bonfire was never meant to be done in an act of stupidity, despite the opinions of some.

The year that happened, I believe the UT band paid tribute to the fallen A & M students at halftime during the UT-AM game, facing the Aggie student body and playing something appropriate, it was quite moving and supposedly lessened the animosity between the rival schools for a good while.

My friend the Aggie was telling me this at some point last night at the after-party, almost teary-eyed.  This was right before he took a couple of swings at me.

You know, I'm not one of those Aggies who professes open animosity towards any particular group, let alone Longhorns. The respect paid by UT students and fans was appreciated.  I think the hostile rivalry thing is over-played at times as I think it's a mostly healthy rivalry.  One I hope gains more significance if Coach Fran can get the team on track.  Personally, I preferred the baseball games.  Although lately, everything has gone in favor of UT.  It's getting to the point where if A&M doesn't start winning some of these events, it's going to be a one-sided rivalry.

As for taking a swing, that's a rite of passage for any good friend of an Aggie!  I throw punches at everyone I know.  It's a bonding event.

Texas' entire halftime was dedicated to the A&M students.  That was one of my favorite parts of that game (besides us actually winning the damn thing).  Also, I remember the Texas players coming out of the tunnel while the Aggie Band was marching off the field in their T formation, in silence.  The team started jumping up and down and shouting, getting pumped for the second half.  They then realized what was happening, stopped, and paid their respects.  Very classy all around.

Thanks for those pics, those are great. Trey, yours too. A friend of mine took a lot of pics on his digital camera and I'll try to share those if I can. Wasn't able to stay in town for the #1 on the tower but I was down on Guadalupe and at the tower a little while after the game.

Mopac was at an almost standstill from 2222 down to campus, horns out of windows and a chorus of honking. It was pure bliss giving high fives and being apart of the celebration on the drag, at the tower and later on 6th street. I couldn't sleep the entire night, rewatching espn and the game on dvr.

Probably the greatest group sports occasion that trancended so much for so many. Vince on the next morning press conference and later on Leno was so humbled, modest and gracious. Mack and Greg Davis' redemption song to all the doubters (of Greg Davis whom I was one of), and the culmination of greatness to all the believers. It couldn't of happened to a nicer person in Mack Brown, genuinely.

More than anything though, it was great, and will forever be great for the Texas players, coaches and at large for the Texas fans and the Texas Longhorn community for years to come. Incredible. Hornzaah!

I think most of us t-sippers view the Ags as our evil little brothers.  We love them and hate them at the same time. Now OU on the other hand, OU just flat out sucks.  We hate them with a passion, no love their whatsoever.  It must be a Texas (as in state) thing.

And yes, had there been some sort of horrible accident at the Hex Rally, and roles had been reversed, A&M would have absolutely extended the same kind of gesture.

I find it interesting that Aggies' response to any criticism is invariably "oh yeah, you're just jealous you're not an Aggie".  That's like a Nazi saying "oh yeah, you're just jealous that you didn't get to join the Hitler Youth".

Nope.  That would have been against "tradition", and that can't happen.  Besides, let's face it, Aggies have but one real "tradition"...acting like insanely jealous childish pricks towards UT.

Yeah, but that's not unique to A&M.  There are a lot of "military schools" or ROTC-type programs where students dress in military-type uniforms and do military-type drills and such, but they're not in the actual U.S. Military.

HH has a problem with Aggies because he works with some shit-heads who happen to be Aggies.  Never mind that he's married to one, IIRC.  Sorry HH, I wasn't even going to comment, figuring you were just in a pissy mood but nowhere in Andy's response did he state or imply you were jealous.  And throwing in the Nazi comment was pretty childish as well as completely unfounded.  Why take a swipe at the Aggies on this thread?

And on the Corp, while I'm no fan of the corp of cadets, some actually do join the military.  I wasn't in the corp, and if you think the corp is reflective of all Aggies or even the majority, you are incredibly ignorant on the current state of A&M.

Sorry, but in this case, I'm going to quote a Longhorn.  FUCK OFF....

Back to the game, I was in the group that thought USC would win, not saying it would be a blowout, just thought USC was better prepared.  Vince Young was unbelievable, especially in the second half.  Tackling may have been suspect but  the guy with the ball usually has something to do with that.

Ummmm...wrong.  But since you all share the same brain, I don't expect you get it.

You compared me to a Nazi, but I need to not react.  Fine logic that.

As for taking a swing, that's a rite of passage for any good friend of an Aggie!  I throw punches at everyone I know.  It's a bonding event.

Well, judging by the turn this thread has taken, its a little late to be saying it, I guess, but my friend whaling at me a couple of times really didn't have to do with the UT-AM thing, at least not directly.  It was because his wife had just walked up, and I grabbed her ass.  And instead of acting offended, she laughed.

I don't know why he got so mad, though.  His wife is my first cousin, we grew up together, and we have been joking around like that for about 30 years.  I think he had a few too many Miesterbraus, or whatever the hell it is he drinks.

I love living here in Houston.  But grab-assing first cousins just down the street in Beaumont is one of those uncomfortable reality checks as to where I'm actually living.  That, and eating at Luby's.

Luby's is more of a nursing home than true redneck dining.  To get the true redneck dining experience, you need to go to Golden Corral or Ryans Steakhouse.  It is genuinely uncomfortable watching over-nurished people piling loads of food on their plates as if they are unaware that "all-you-can-eat" means you are allowed return trips.

As far as grabassing amongst first cousins, people actually purchasing movie tickets to see gay cowboys consumate their love makes the first cousin affection tame in comparison.

I agree with this completely.  Another place is any Chinese buffet.  I remember when that cuisine was just hitting mass popularity here.  Word was, besides, tasting good, it was healthy to eat.  "You never see a fat Chinaman, do you?"  Well, no.  But somehow I don't think the average citizen over there is eating two or three plates piled high with fried pork and spicy noodles at dinner, either.  Anytime I get to thinking I am part of a culture that has evolved beyond something from the Middle Ages, I go to an All-You-Can-Eat.

Or Wal-Mart.

Oh, and re: my cousin, if you saw her ass, you'd grab it, too.

Yes, We know.  We know a lot about you.  We know where you live...a stone's throw from Klein HS.  Although we wouldn't be throwing mere stones.

Epithets, yes, or something like it.  Depending on whether the weapons depot stocks these epithet things of which you speak.

Careful, Big Brother might come over from the WBC thread and wiretap you for that.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.
