Right now, I'm thinking the team looks at him as a LF because they have to see Bagwell in ST and what he can do.   If Bags is unsuccessful, Wilson is the full time LF.  If Bags is successful, Wilson could be an option in any of the outfield spots, and Bagwell will need plenty of rest on his shoulder anyways.   It also opens up trade possibilities for Lane/Taveras because Wilson can play any outfield spot.

Don't forget to add Burke in the trade possibilities.

True, I had just considered Burke already a trade possibility before this move(if it gets finalized of course)

I thought the Astros were trying to avoid one year/rent a player deals?  Maybe there's will be a team option attached.

Looking at his career numbers, age, park effects, etc., I think it's reasonable to expect a BA between .260 and .270, 25-30 HR's, and an OPS in the .790 to .820 range. Sure, he'll strike out about 140 times, but barring injury, he should be a nice addition.

The Chron article says 1 year, Purpura says there are "details".  An option could be a detail.  We'll have to wait for the announcement to know.

"Could we have made trades by now?" Purpura said. "Sure, we could. I'm not certain they'd help us long term."

Purpura may have been limiting that restriction to trades, and not to FA signings.  However, if Wilson causes dominos to fall (Taveras, Lane traded, as speculated here, or maybe just benched) then the effect is the same.  Course it depends on who they are able to get in those trades.

It's easier to convince yourself to sign a short term solution than to trade for something short term, mainly because the free agent does not come with subtraction of talent from the organization.   Provided everything goes smoothly from here on out regarding Wilson, you have accomplished a few things:

A) Upgraded the offense, without sacrificing talent
B) Acquired at minimum, an excellent Bagwell contingency plan, and Wilson has the added bonus of being able to play all three outfield spots.
C) Because of Wilson's versatility, the Astros can feel more comfortable about potential trade offers with Taveras/Lane/Burke included.
D) Maintained payroll flexibility(to pursue potential replacements/upgrades) in future seasons when major contracts(Bagwell and Pettitte come to mind mainly, and Biggio's 4 mil dollar contract to a lesser extent) come off the books.
Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted.

Purpura said it was an extended option with the possibility of it being a 3 year contract.

Update: contract could be total of 4 years.  Club Option after this year, to pick up the remaining 3 years of the deal.   Unique contract if you ask me.   But I'm happy with the move.

Purpura wouldn't nail down a set position on Preston, and Purpura said that Preston's reputation around the league is that of a great clubhouse guy/teammate.

Good point.  I remember Biggio saying that he thought that Wilson was playing the game "right" (or "the way it is supposed to be played") and that he never thought that Preston was being vicious or dirty. I also remember Preston Wilson having a deep respect for Biggio's attitude about it all as well.

Shhh... they are from South Carolina. Those kind of things aren't discussed in public!   Let's just say, some family trees don't have a lot of branches, if you know what I'm saying.

All kidding aside, I'm glad to have Preston Wilson on the team. If he could just get his walks up to 50-60 and continue to hit for power, I'll gladly overlook the K's.

Back to the topic of baseball, any one want to venture a guess  at who or what position Purpura targets next?  I'm reading rumors of Houston having interest in Ryan Franklyn.  I'm not making any bets on that deal but a starting pitcher seems likely.  I believe Purpura even mentioned Pitching as the next priority, although he mentioned only relievers.

Rent-a-player is when you have to trade away young talent to acquire a guy for a year or part thereof.  A free-agent signing is different.

With Wilson's contract, the three year option or half million buy out after this season, this is more like audition-a-player.

Still, what a bizarre option. Even if Wilson matches his best season, I can't see the 'Stros commiting themselves for another 3 years at double his current salary. And I don't see Wilson suddenly becoming a .300/.380/.530 hitter.

It's hard to find a free agent .300/.380/.530 hitter for $7m per. If he's just a productive bat in the heart of the lineup, he's a bargain at 4/$28m.

Well, right, that's hard to find (although the option is $8m per, no?); what I mean is, at 31, he is very unlikely to have a performance better than .275/.340/.520. He is a very good gamble at $4m, IMO, but I can't see them exercising that option on a guy his age with knee problems, even if he makes it through this year with no DL time. Maybe I'm wrong.

And how many other times has Wilson been injured?  It's not like this guy is another Griffey, Jr. when it comes to health.
