Another Tejada Rumor
« on: December 31, 2005, 01:18:29 am »
"Second, the Astros are definitely in talks for Tejada.  Interestingly, their proposal does not involve Brad Lidge.  Their offer consists of a position player and a pitching prospect.  Unfortunately, that's all the info I have on that one.  A little speculation:  Chris Burke, Jason Lane, or Willy Taveras could be the position player in question.  I have to think the pitching prospect would come off their top ten list, and could be Jason Hirsh or Troy Patton."

As long as Everett's arbitration hearing is pending, I would be surprised to see the Astros make a move for any SS. Would the Orioles play Chris Gomez full time at SS? Or would AE possibly part of the deal. As much as I love Tejada's bat, he's built more like a NFL running back than an MLB SS, the difference between him and Everett on defense would be painfully obvious. Tejada has a strong arm but doesn't have the range or hands of Everett.

Astros Discussing Jose Contreras
First off, my apologies for the confusion in my last post.  Let's set the record straight about this Astros/White Sox thing.

My source wasn't referring to the Astros' interest in Miguel Tejada, but rather Jose Contreras.  Baltimore likes the righthander, but Houston covets him as well.  The Sox are talking to the Astros currently, but have no interest in Brad Lidge.  Their reasoning:  they believe in the young, cheap Bobby Jenks.  The Sox also have concerns about Lidge's future health after piling on the innings as well as his impending large salary.  That all makes sense; the Sox have no reason to acquire another closer.

Nothing to do with Lidge, everything to do with Bobby Jenks.

A little more from mlbtraderumors:

"Another clarification: the player the Sox are considering for Contreras is Willy Taveras.  The additional prospects are unknown.  Given the massive salary gap between Jose Contreras and Taveras, this deal would free up cash to be used for reinforcements at the trading deadline.  As mentioned before, the White Sox are willing to go up to a $105MM payroll."

Where do they get this stuff from?
