I like Rondell but can't shake the idea of Abreu hitting in the 2 spot as an Astro next year.

always the optimistic guy...if he really wanted L.A., the deal would have been done 2 days ago.

i'm hoping he realizes that the Dodgers have an average pitching and offense (even with his presence) and decides to sign with us!!

The only thing is that the Astros have rarely done well with signing players coming off injuries the previous years.

Or signing guys with strong Houston/Texas ties.  I struggle to think of a big free agent signing in recent memory that didn't have the hometown connection as a major factor.

The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Why does it matter anyway?  Some people keep hollering that because Player X actually *wanted* to play for the Astros, that he doesn't count as actually *signing* with the Astros.  WTF?  Do they expect guys to come out and say "I really hate the Astros and don't want to play for them, but I signed anyway"?

It doesn't matter. It's just a way to criticize the Astros without an understanding of their strategy.  The subtext is that the Astros are too cheap to sign a real free agent unless they get him at a discount.   On the other hand, there are people who believe no one ever says what they're thinking and all public statements should be summarily dismissed as propaganda.

And who have the Astros signed at any significant discount over what they reasonably could have expected elsewhere?  Kent?  No.  Pettitte?  No.  Clemens?  The first year they did, then paid through the nose the next.  This is simply unfounded bitching and whining about about incorrect perceptions.  

It's like the bitching and whining about how much they're paying Ausmus, or how much they might pay Rondell White for fear those guys are eating up payroll.  When Mclane comes out and says "Player X is available at a reasonable price, but we don't have the money to sign him", it'll be the first time.  Until then, there has never, ever been any indication that this would be a problem.

I for one really wish the Astros had foregone a couple of $2 million signings last winter so they could've afforded to outbid the Mets for Beltran and his 16 home runs.
