McLane's Comment: Abreu ?
« on: December 02, 2005, 01:48:07 pm »
I am wondering if Pup and Wallet know something we don't;
Abreu & $$$ for Lane & Wheeler & PTBNL. Convert Wheeler to closer?

you bet it is; but McLane's enthusiastic comment is grounded in something exciting; and doesn't Gordon have a history of elbow problems?

He's been healthy since 2000.  When is Mclane not enthusiastic?  Abreu is not coming to Houston.

OK,OK Abreu is a stretch, but is Drayton usually this upbeat going into Winter meetings? I just don't see re-signing Ausmus, Clemens, and getting a healthy Bagwell is what Drayton/Pup are preparing for presently. Maybe Dunn?

Mclane is this upbeat on any given Tuesday.  Also, both Purpura and Mclane, as you noticed, are saying there are negotiations with teams ongoing. No one knows what these negotiations are for.  How does that lead you to any insights on what the Astros are preparing for presently?

your assumption is correct, I am devoid any substantial insight, however, as with other astros fans, I have gut feeling the combination of last years' success and number of sought after prospects make us pretty attractive. On the heels of Dallas, it makes wonder what would be "exciting" on McLane's list presently.  ($$$, fresh produce, or a premier hitter)

McLane usually throws around the term "exciting" during press conferences involving Biggio, Bagwell and Clemens. He also uses that term to describe his ballclub...after every ticket price increase.

Seriously, I'd be excited about Houston signing Garciaparra to a short term, incentive laden deal to man LF.  If Garciaparra would go for it, that's as close to a no-brainer that I see in the FA market.  His name isn't connected to any rumors, for whatever that is worth.

I know what that Philly Daily News article says, but we all know that it doesn't always work out that way. He could still be traded, especially if  Jayson Stark is to be believed. It would proably take more than just the rumored deal involving Qualls and Backe, though.

  Stark was reporting from the winter meetings today and mentoined Huuuuuston as the team really making a push for Abreu.  Again talked about Backe and Qualls with the Phillies still having middle relief problems.  I think that deal would be good for both teams (advantage Stros) if we were willing to take Abreu's salary.
