One of the Astros targets narrows his suitors down to 4

Lefty reliever Scott Eyre has narrowed his list to 4 clubs, with the Astros on the list.   The Cubs, Cards and Braves are the other 3 teams on his list.   It would really be nice to have another LH option in the pen besides Gallo, and Eyre had an era of 2.63 last year for the Giants.

fwiw, people here in the bay area seem to be pretty surprised by his exit; seems to be a case of a local guy the locals thought only they knew about until the local guy found out the locals weren't the only ones who knew about him.

if that makes sense.

"I never, ever want to win the World Series," said Eyre, "so I signed with the Cubs."

So is it cause for optimism (that we'll be buyers this offseason), that we were interested in a middle reliever with that kind of price tag?

My guess is that he didn't sign with the Astros because he had that kind of price tag.

Scott Eyre "...if something comes up where I can play closer to home (Bradenton, FL) and it's going to be a fun clubhouse and something like San Francisco, it's going to be a tough decision to turn down." ...``If people don't understand that, they don't love their kids like I do...."

He got a three-year, $11 million deal from the Cubs

"While money was instrumental in sealing the deal, Eyre cited the Cubs' "fun clubhouse" and the camaraderie he noticed while watching them during batting practice before Cubs-Giants games."

Also, he got a no trade clause,

Eyre will earn $3 million in 2006, and $4 million in each of the following two years. The deal includes a $1.5 million signing bonus, and a no-trade clause and the third year is the player's option. Other incentives in the deal could add another $2.4 million over the three years.

Chicago is just northeast of Tampa, right?

I'm getting the impression that you don't love your children...

Scott sets the bar pretty low for showing his love for his children. I think every other major league club is closer to his home, save the Mariners.

as for BJ Ryan,

"His preference is to close for a team with at least a chance of competing for a world championship, according to a person familiar with his thinking, which is why he chose to visit the Blue Jays, Tigers and Mets this week and not the Yankees."

Pure speculation only,

"Among the possible targets the Astros are considering are two pitchers they pursued last summer before the trade deadline but were unable to acquire: free agent relievers B.J. Ryan and Scott Eyre." ...

"I'm not going to comment on who we may or may not have talked to," Purpura told MLB.com...

I can't really see that being the case as much as I'd love it to be true.   He wants to be a closer, and the team won't offer him that spot for good reason.   He is also going to get a lot of money from someone to close games(talking 5 mil and above per year) and that kind of money is really steep for a setup man.
