My buddy at work and I were talking about what the Astros could add in terms of offense this offseason and he mentioned that the Phillies were shopping Thome and were willing to pick up some of the $$ on his contract.  Do you think he'd be worth Purpura and the Grocer pursuing?

he can only play 1B. if he is healthy and Bagwell cannot play, sure.

I've seen news that the Astros might be interested in Millar. He can "play" left and first. Nothing about Thome.

Let's say Clemens signs another contract (one year).  Would you trade Zeke for Dunn (unless Dunn can be gotten for less than Zeke).  

Leaving Dunn in RF, Berkman in LF, Bagwell at 1B.  If Bagwell can't play then Berkman at 1B, Dunn in LF and Lane in RF.

The rumor passed along around the deadline (although I'm not sure how true) was Astacio, Nieve, and Buchholz for Dunn and Mercker.

I have never understood teams that are willing to trade the farm for a cow.  Where are you going to keep the cow then?

I think the only way the Astros add a bat is through a trade.  IMO, no way does Purpura trade so much talent in the farm system for one player.  He loves his players in the farm system too much.

but in honesty, how many of those guys never make it?  probably a good %.  I would be willing to give quite a bit from the farm for a PROVEN 40-50 HR guy.  The odds are even the "safe bets" farm the farm system turn out to be good at best 50%.  therefore, I would be willing to roll the dice on that... For example, estascio and scott.

you certainly don't trade a bunch of "can't miss" prospects.  But you try to work a deal where you give a guy like astascio who has a good chance of being a productive player.  and then package him with some guys that seem like they could be pretty good (scott, busholz, etc) but may not, and even if they are won't be all that special compared to a guy who can hit 40-50 hrs

I like the addition of Ryan as well.  It sounds (gathered from the limited amount of talk I've heard from Pup) as though a catcher is in the teams plans, which makes sense if Bags plays, as our OF would then be set with Berkman/Taveras/Lane.  Catcher might be the only other place you can fit a bat into the lineup if that's what the club is looking to do.  Now that being said, and please don't hit me with the "Ausmus-defense" debate, would RHernandez give us the offense we need?

Hell, my guess is that the Pup would like Ausmus back first and shop for Hernandez, maybe Molina second.  But if the goal of the team is to upgrade the offense, then I'm not sure where (postion?) else they'll be able to go assuming Bags plays.  I know a trade can be made, but that would be late in February, maybe even into March based on the club having to wait on Bagwell right?  That might make a trade a little more tough, no?

While I do agree with some of what you say, you have to consider that the Astros are not the Yankees.  Their success depends on the club filling a certain amount of roster spots with young, inexpensive players.
