A tip of the hat to the 2005 Houston Astros
« on: October 27, 2005, 01:03:48 am »
What a great ride it's been this year.  Thanks for some really enjoyable baseball even when you were tearing our hearts out.  We'll be back on board in the spring.

Oh, and congrats to the White Sox, who outplayed the Astros hands down in this World Series.

We'll be back.

Anyone who isn't going to respect our team didn't watch these games! Man we had some great pitching, great defense.

Sox earned it.

To the Astros:

Thanks for sharing the ride.

P.S.

At least we lost to a team with a GM who refuses to draft or deal with Boras players. So there's the silver lining kiddos.

Last year we knocked on the door. This year we pounded on the door. Next year we?re gonna kick the son of a bitch in.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

I disagree.  The only people that "deserve" rings are those that win the title.

Baggs and Biggio will now have a trip to the WS on their very distinguished resumes.  I am happy for them.  Hopefully next year we kick down that door and get the win (and the ring that goes with it).

This was an awesome ride.   And I can now say I went to a WS game in my lifetime.   The Whitesox just were really good, nothing more needs to be said.   I tip my cap to them, they played really well, and it wasn't like the Astros didn't.   This was the closest sweep I have ever seen, and probably ever will see in my lifetime.  I'm not upset at all, just ready for next year and the fact that nobody can call the Astros postseason failures anymore.   In two years Bagwell and Biggio have cemented their HOF status and the team/organization has a huge monkey off their backs.
Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted.

Extra props to Biggio for taking the playoff monkey off his back, placing it at second base, and spiking it in the face as he slides in for yet another double.  The fact that there exist people with more doubles than Biggio is just mind boggling.

I -heart- all of these guys. I never thought I'd live long enough to see any of this. It's a great accomplishment, and kudos to Purpura, McLain, and everyone in the organization.

Let's retool for 2006!

Thanks for the great season Stros.  I thought last year was the best it could get, but this year was just plain magical.  Can't wait to see what these guys have for us in 2006.

Unapologetically posting song lyrics.

"Taking Off" - The Cure

Tomorrow I can start again
With back to earth and carry on
The same as I did yesterday
Yeah I'll pick it up once more

And morning I'll be onto it
From square one start
And push it for a bit
Like I do everyday...
I'll get it down for sure

But tonight I climb with you
Tonight
So high with you
Tonight I shine with you
Tonight
Oh I'm so alive with you

Tomorrow I'll begin again
With heavy head to hold it
As I do it all like yesterday
Yeah I'll break it out again

And morning I'll be there in time
For clock back move
And make it for awhile
To get through everyday...
I'll roll it out the same

But tonight I climb with you
Tonight
So high with you
Tonight I shine with you

Tonight I'm so alive...
With you it's always here and never there
With you it's always here and never where
With you it's always here and never how
With you it's always here and always now

Yeah tomorrow I will start again
With back to earth and carry on
The same as I did yesterday
Yeah I'll pick it up once more

And morning I'll be onto it
From square one start and "bit a for it push"
Like I do everyday...
I'll get it down for sure

But tonight I climb with you
Tonight
So high with you
Tonight I shine with you
Tonight

Edit:  FTR, my iPod pulled this out of its arse this morning.  Amazing!

It was an amazing year.  Thanks, Astros.  And thanks Orangewhoopass, the BEST Astros fans.  Ever.  It was a pleasure to meet you this last week.

What a class act this team was. Think back to the 1st of June and the ride we've had since then. Those guys pulled together and showed the world what a committed team can do. And it just got better and better. So many great memories ... To me, the best being that 18-inning NLDS game with Berkman's grand slam, Ausmus' tying run with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth, and finally Kid Burke's game-winning home run. YES! And that game-saving, miracle, Bruntlett to Everett double play in the NLCS. ALL RIGHT!

Did anyone go to the game last night and hang around after the last out?  About a thousand fans (the Chron's estimate) hung around the Astros' dugout shouting "Houston! Astros!" and one by one, the players and then Phil and Mrs. Garner came out on the field to a standing ovation to acknowlege the fans and say "thanks" themselves. All while the Sox were celebrating on the other side of the field. You could barely hear them over the din created by the Astros' fans.  Bidge stood there with his arms wide open, blowing kisses and yelling "Thank You!"  It was one of the most touching things I've ever witnessed as an Astros fan.  Classy.  Both the team and the fans.

I woke up this morning not disappointed, but grateful.  Thank you 2005 Astros!  Go Astros in 2006!

And see you guys around the Pub.
It's the freakin' World Series

I was still there.  When Biggio came out a bunch of us started the Big-gi-o chant.  He was the one that brought a few tears to my eyes.  I loved that some of the players came back out.  Backe seemed to be interviewed a lot when he came out.  He tossed his hat into the crowd.  Morgan might have also.

It was great meeting you also.

What an incredible year from an incredible team that has nothing at all to hang its head about. Things didn't end exactly the way we would have hoped, but a lot better than most would have expected. I'm already planning on taking a vacation next year to drive over for the home opener and give the guys a proper ovation. The pennant was such a long time in coming, and I enjoyed the hell out of it. Looking forward to warming my hands over the hot stove with you kids this winter - take care, and thanks for making this the (non-existent, purely digital, but nonetheless homey) place that it is.

What a season.  What away to end it.  The most hard-fought and closest sweep in history.  Different players were on different nights--it's just too bad we couldn't get it all in sync.  Qualls stepped up.  So did Backe.  And Viz.  Add a few timely hits by J-Lay.  And Berkman was a force every night (until they figured out to give him nothing in the strike zone, and even then he was virtually a guaranteed baserunner).

Not all the players came through, but they gave it everything they had.  One more box has been checked on the "Things to Do for Houston" list.  Thanks for everything, Astros.  Happy endings are boring anyway--I prefer tragic heroism.  And I could not imagine a more poetic ending to the season than Game 4.  I'm glad I could be there to cheer for this Team in the final moments of a magical year.

These guys gave me what is almost assured to be my best baseball memory.  Being there for the 18 inning game 4 in the NLDS will be pretty fucking hard to top. So as sad as it was to drop the Series like we did, I felt great thinking about that game and the total elation I had when we took out the fucking Jakes.

I'll get my mini-plan again next year and be proud as hell when they unveil that NL champs pennant next April on Opening Day. I'll be ready again to be along for the ride that they'll take us on in '06.
