No, I don't think he's a hall of famer.  He played the game well but I just don't see him getting the votes.

If Walker is a HOFer, than so is Paul O'Neil.  And Ellis Burks.  And Andy Van Slyke.  No fuckin' way.  He's a .280/20HR hitter without Coors.

For playing 18 years, his career numbers aren't all that impressive.

Nice average, but fewer than 400 homers and fewer than 1500 RBI.  Outfielders don't get in because of their defense, so I think it'd be a tough road for him.

Look at it this way.  Bagwell is questionable and he's got better numbers across the board in 3 fewer seasons.

From what I hear, he's been playing in near excruciating pain for some time.  Tough competitor and a great player.  Not a great moment to call your last.

Walker gone; Morris, Eyetest and Sanders all free agents.  That's 4 starters who might not be Jakes next year.

A good friend of mine who happens to be a Cardinals fan (he's been one forever and is not irrational about them) thinks that this offseason will be interesting in terms of who they get to replace Walker.  Replacing Sanders AND Walker will be a fairly tough thing.  However, the guy who finished Anaheim Jimmy's at-bat the other night (John somebody, can't remember his name) will probably get the starting nod for one of them.

My Cardinal buddies claim there's talent in their minors, serious talent.  As a casual versus serious observer, anyone here have an informed take on that, or should I tell 'um they're jakes and our newest bitches?

Don't get too scared, too quick.  He only had 5 HRs in 149 ABs.  He had a .295 BA, but only 25% of his hits were for extra bases.  And he's a 27 y.o. rookie.  He may improve a bit in his second year with more ABs, but his numbers are shy of what either Walker or Sanders did this past season.

Is that something Houston would work to avoid, maybe try to get something concessions from San Diego, Ausmus & Giles, given Brad's desire to play close to home next season or before he's done?

No thanks.  The Astros' outfield is set because it'll be Berkman, Taveras and Lane with Lamb or Bags at 1st, or various permutations involving Burke as we've seen this year.  I'd prefer to keep Ausmus' arse behind our plate for one more season.

The only talent the Cards have in the minors is pitching.  Rodriguez is a 27 year old rookie who the Cards traded for during the season.  Gall is the other outfield "prospect" and his defense flat out sucks and is sarcastically called a "future hall of famer" by many Cards fans for all the talk about how great he is, yet he can never crack the roster.
