I really like Jayson Stark- I think he's the best baseball writer that I regularly read. If there is anyone more enjoyable please let me know as I would like to read them. I also like Tracy Rigsby (sp?) up in Denver- think he does some pretty quality work.

Odd, people on the St Louis boards universally think he's an idiot.

Living in STL for 3 years at law school caused me to lose a TON of respect for STL fans.  When the Rams won the super bowl my first year up there it was clear that the town had a football IQ of 65 or so.  I heard people in sports bar's asking questions like - Why is Marshal Faulk returning kickoffs for us and such (hint- he wasn't).

Their newspaper columnists are a joke- and they aren't great baseball fans- they are Cardinal fans- which is a big difference.  Yeah- maybe they politely applaud good plays by the other team but that is just the midwest in them.  Ask them about goings on around the league, or other teams in stadiums and you get a blank stare.

The fact that they cannot appreciate a guy like Jayson Stark is not surprising, they are moronic nitwits.  Their columnists are as much a collection of hacks as ours are, and their average baseball IQ is no greater than the average astros fans IQ.  Note in game 2 they had their fair share of idiots participating in the Day-O chant just like ours.

STL is the most provincial town I have ever lived in.  It ain't diverse the way H-town is- everyone that lives there is from there, and they have a comical inferiority complex to Chicago.  They have nasty Pizza that they love called IMO's and they love it just b/c it is local.  There is some decent Italian food, but other than that the food scene sucks.  There is not a lot fun to do, the bar district sucks, the weather is miserable (think same awful h-town summer- but with cold ass weather for 4 or 5 months with snow during the winter). They have suck beer as you only get Bud products at most bars.

I strongly, strongly disliked that town, and had I never lived in the depressing ass city known as Seattle it would be my least favorite place ever.

F- STL and their geriatric, overrated, moronic fans.

I have come to really appreciate him more. Today's article had some really dark clouds thrown in if you are an Astros fan, but it put it all together to show a nice perspective on the game/pitch/series/season.

He has been money lately.

Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News.  He's the finest beat writer out there.  I sure wish we had someone like him instead of Pinwheel.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I knew I was leaving out half of his name- thanks for the catch HH

XM listeners out there- does anyone regularly listen to the baseball beat with Charlie Steiner?  I have heard this show probably 3 or 4 times when I was out running errands away from work- and it seems like the concept is really solid, but Steiner likes to wander away from baseball talk sometimes and get into stupid movie talk and the like.  It's obvioulsy driven by who they are talking to, but I have been struck by how much better the writing is in some places.  Of course- he's presumably only talking to the best out there, but I heard pinwheel justice so who knows.  Had footer on one day and I liked her- thought she did a very credible job of summarizing the local 9 for a national audience.

Pretty much everything you said there is not true or is an exaggeration.  I've lived in STL on and off for 10 years & Houston for 7.  I do agree with the rest of your post re:Cards fans.  As I consider the source (Wash U law school student), I am not surprised by what you wrote.

Are you saying STL is a hip happening town with a fun bar scene?

Are you saying IMO's pizza doesn't suck?

Are you saying STL does not have an inferiority complex to Chicago?

Are you saying the food scene outside the hill is good?

Seriously, I want to know what your take on this is that I'm exagerating.  I've lived in 7 or 8 different major cities and traveled to every city of any importance in theis country excepting Miami, and I would put STL as the worst of any place I've lived (Washington DC, H-twon, San Franscico, Austin, STL, Minneapolis and Seattle).  Just comparing it to national league cities I would in a heartbeat take every city in the East, Houston, Chicago, Milwaukee (a surprisingly fun town that I've been to 4 or 5 times as my bro-in-law went to Marquette- but never during the miserable winters), San Diego, Phoenix, San Fran, LA and Denver over all of them. I would rank your city above only Pittsburg and Cincinatti in livability.  Seriously, there is nothing cool to do there- (it ain't like living on the east coast or west coast, or golf mecca phoenix, Ski Haven Colorado etc.)

If honestly believe that it can hold a candle to H-town well, I'm speechless.  Seriously, it is a second rate city, in a second rate part of the country, with little to nothing going for it.   The people there that love STL love it b/c they know nothing else, or are comparing it to other jerk water towns in nowhere's ville Missouri or Northern Arkansas or rural Illinois or Iowa.  The town is a small city with a chip on its shoulder the size and shape of the Arch.

Fans of STL can blow me.

that is all for now- I eagerly await your defense of the city.

My experience has told me that people in St. Louis that like ?St. Louis style? pizza, do not do so ?just? because it is local as you said.  They like it because it tastes good to them.  Personally, I think it is pretty decent pizza, as long as you are in the mood for it (same goes with that heavy, Chicago style pizza).

There are many good restaurants outside of the Hill (which I think you exaggerated by calling it ?decent?).  In your three years here, did you go down to Soulard, or hit any of the restaurants on Grand?  I think they match up pretty well with Papa-whatevers.

I never was a big bar-hopper, but my band played down in Soulard a lot & it was a very good time.  Of course it doesn?t hold a candle to Chicago or Austin, etc., but good times can certainly be had.

Weather preferences are very subjective, but I personally like 4 seasons.  Houston has 2 ? summer and not summer.  I like a little snow, but, again, that is subjective.

?They have suck beer as you only get Bud products at most bars.? The first part of the sentence is untrue and the second part of the sentence is a wild exaggeration.

Thanks for presenting your living & traveling credentials.  I won?t bore you with mine, but suffice it to say they are of equal merit as yours, and include living on two other continents.

STL vs. Houston in terms of cities is not my call to make.  Both cities have their pros & cons.  While I hate St. Louis sports, people here are generally nice.  The town has a zoning policy that makes sense.  The food is good.  And perhaps most importantly, my wife is from here.  Personal decision.

I?m not sure why you have permitted the people of St. Louis to give you fellatio, but based on the number of posts you have today, it might be out of the excitement of the day.  I?ll gladly pass you message along to Betsy, the 65 year-old accounting clerk near my office, though.

I?ve found that arguing over the internet with a lawyer, from Wash U, nonetheless, is about as productive as pissing in the wind.  No matter how good of a stream you have, and how well you?ve worked with the elements, chances are you?re not going to be able to avoid the piss.  So, don?t count on a long battle with me.

Go Astros!!!

I am about as far outside the norm of the typical Wash U student as there probably has ever been- and I am not a lawyer (I don't practice law) but simply a businessman with a law degree- so take your stereotype and shove it up your ass.

As to the rest of the post- different strokes for different folks.  But if you do not think that STL is a provincial town with a chip on its shoulder and an inferiority complex than I have nothing more for you, other than to say, yes,
Go Astros.

I'm not sure why you insist on people giving you fellatio & me putting things up my ass.  While this is a possibility -"I am about as far outside the norm of the typical Wash U student as there probably has ever been" - you are just assessing yourself against the Wash U law group, and not normal people.  I've spent considerable time in that building and also have a masters degree from a different department at the school - I think my stereotype is pretty valid.

I love your main argument.  You initially make these sometimes untrue, sometimes exaggerated statements about St. Louis, then you ignore my point for point responses, and then you bring up the small part that I didn't directly address. "Pretty much everything you said there is not true or is an exaggeration" was my original statement & I'll stick to it.

So, here I will discuss your inferiority / "provincial town" comment.  I will go with the definition of "provincial" to be "Limited in perspective; narrow and self-centered."  Is St. Louis an international hub?  No, but it does have some international flavor.  I won't bore you with the history of the town.  It is safe to say that people who live here are generally at least 3rd or 4th generation legal immigrants.  That is, it is not "Little Mexico" or anything.

As for your use of the word "provincial", it depends on the context.  This is a very provincial country we live in.  Is St. Louis provincial within the context of living in a provincial county?  Maybe, but what is wrong with people being okay with living in a nice, stable town?

Whenever companies are relocated out of St. Louis, you'll find that the workers mostly stay.  It is well known around town that St. Louisans love St. Louis.  I would think if "they" felt inferior, wouldn't they just move to Chicago?  People with multi-city international backgrounds (typical Wash U student) might feel inferior living here, but the locals don't.

So, what's the expectation here? WuLaw, after developing an impression of St Louis over 3 years of living there, is suddenly going to slap his forehead and say "what was I thinking?" because of the forceful influence of your argument?

I think Marcus here is just in the crosshairs because he has the enemy's location in his board-name.

No, there is no expectation here.  You of all people should know - if someone is writing about something authoritatively, which you believe to be untrue, it is sometimes worth pointing out that their beliefs are not universal.  No more, no less.

I think his tastes are suspect due to the mention of the Papas-etc representing the best restaurants in Houston.  I've never been to St Louis, so I have no way to know who's subjective opinion is empirically correct.

Well, here's what I've noticed over the years about Houston and St Louis (other than they can't be compared since Houston is a megalopolis and St Louis is Very Big City)...

St Louis is full of people who are not only FROM St Louis, but whose families generations back are from St Louis.  That must say something about it.  People are still free to move, as far as I can tell, so you'd think the city would see a lot of turnover, but you don't.

On the other hand, Houston is full of people who are NOT from Houston.  In fact, for a city of 5 million, I'm still amazed to meet someone other than myself or my wife who was ACTUALLY BORN there.  But understand my point is this...millions of people, literally, who chose to leave their OLD city, chose Houston.  Which says more about its city?

Well I think it's interesting that 90 years ago, St Louis was twice the size of Houston.  Not so much anymore.

Not bashing St Louis at all, which as a city, I have nothing against.  My only experience there occured during the worst blizzard ever there, so I think of it as a very nice city that is colder than Banff.

MRaup, you are right.  Living in St. Louis and supporting the Astros can be tough.  Having it in my board name is humorous to me b/c no one here can understand why I don't support the Cardinals.  Now, that's provincial.

Also, when I used to go by the name Eric Anthony, it would dig up bad memories for people, so I switched.

I HIGHLY recommend.

Look at the facts:

2) The Astros are 3-0 when I visit Richmond.

Are you MAD?  Numerous studies have shown that state of mind has a great influence on recall.  Students who study in the same frame of mind as they are when they recall the information do far better on tests.  How in the name of small, unidentifiable, pointed, implements, is Alkie going to recreate THIS state of mind when he takes the test?  Go, go to class, go learn something.

How on earth could he possibly recreate the state of nervousness, anticipation, and worry when taking a test which has a large effect on his livelihood.

Good point.

I think the better question is when will he EVER have a better chance to study in the PERFECT state of mind.

You want baseball discussion, go over to the Cards forum, they're THRILLED to point out in 160 different ways why

1) our park is such a joke that it's a miracle the Cards won a single game there

2) the Cards have the obvious advantage tonight despite the fact that the Astros (I'd like to point out) have won 3 of the last 4 games head-to-head in Busch, including wins in games started by Mulder, Carpenter, and Morris

3) the Astros have no momentum, unlike last year when our star RBI man hit a DRAMATIC walk-off HR above the Crawford Boxes off the opponent's ace, unhittable closer to send the series back to St Louis, where we prompty took our momentum and crammed it up our asses (this is a joke; there is no such thing as game-to-game momentum)

4) as pointed out "Asstros" is extremely hilarious

5) Tony LaRussa is hated as much as I would expect, win or lose

6)  Phil Garner is actually considered the worst manager in baseball, not because we win, see, but because it's clear to Cards fans that he knows nothin about the game (this one, I'm still trying to figure out)

7)  Did I mention that there's a short porch in left?  SHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORT!  POOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORCH!!!  LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEFT!!!

I think you need to reconsider the use of the word "anticipation".  That might need to be bumped up a little.  In any case, if he could recreate the emotional state, he might pass the test but likely would be brought up on some sort of ethics violation.

Let me be quite clear.  Taking the CPA exam is not even in the same DIMENSION as Game Six tonight.

When I took the first section (there are 4) I was ALMOST....ALMOST like I am today.  Second section was more of a Cubs game with 3 to go.  Section 3 was like a Rockies game in May.  This last section, I need to pass, don't get me wrong, but after nailing 3 for 3 on the first try, I'm not exactly "worried."

It's NOTHING like today.

See- although I love Pappasitos Marcus point in pointing out STL cuisine matches up with that is the entirety of the point I was making that STL is a hick, backwater, provincial town.

Alkie further demonstrates it by pointing out that people that are from there have been so for generations- that's b/c their point of reference is jerkwater Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa and rural Illinois and they don't realize that they can move.   People, on the other hand, want to live in H-town and choose to move here from all over, presumably, when if they were going to relocate they could relocate anywhere.

As to saying STL can blow me- well, it's kinda a common theme or expression/ locker room type talk acceptable, which I would argue is the standard level of discourse on this board.  You seem to be the one hung up on fellatio.

Yes- Italian on the hill is "decent".  It ain't better on the hill (and I've been to about all of those places) then Damions or Crappittos, or the place over in rice village I'm blanking on right now.  Go to Tony's and that's the best restaurant in town in STL, and a place like Mark's in H-town blows doors off of it.

If your point is that I can't make fun of the 14th best city in the national league for being a dull, uninteresting, backwater locale with not much going for it while my beloved Astros are playing them in the NLCS then I don't really understand your point at all- just let it be if someone is shit talking the opposing stadium with valid points.

Again, I think I responded to all of your points but if not bring up a specific one and I will be on topic- b/c my venom for all things STL is flowing pretty well right now.

Again- I have pointed out many times that Ozzie's is the best sports bar I've ever been to as far as "getting it" about how a place should be run- I would change nothing about it.  Outside of that the town of STL has less to offer than any other city I've lived in and most that I have visited.

Is there any hope of everyone just ignoring Wulaw's St Louie posts???  He is getting realllly worked up about this.  Ans if I have to hear one more time about how St Louis sucks I will hang myself with a shoelace (ya'll get the short-form posts, I have to hear the longwinded rant in person).

Funny enough, and to fuel the stereotype of St. Louis, the band I was in was called Backwater Draw.  It seemed to go over well here....   Oh, well, maybe we are all provincial jerkwater fags.  But I still love the Astros.

Eastex-  If you'll notice on my location- it says Montgomery Texas- a 3A town when I went to high school.  I love it there and could live my whole life in a city, in the suburbs, or in the middle of nowhere and be fine with it, so long as its a cool city, or cool suburb or cool middle of nowhere type place.  I'd love to have a spread in the piney woods, or the hill country, or even in the middle of nowhere Iowa.

What pissed me off about STL was that it was a city and had the hassles of a city, without the benefits of a city (i.e. first class food, entertainment, bars, nightlife, museams, theater, musicals etc.) If I'm gonna deal with living in a large metro area I want all that.  If not I'd be content to live in the middle of the sticks b/c the pace of life is slower and its a calculated trade off that you make.  I didn't mean to imply that I thought living somewhere outside the city sucks- b/c that wasn't at all my point.

yes- that is my point- east texas is not urban but it isn't trying to be urban- so its a different dynamic.  There is nothing wrong with living someplace that isn't urban, and there are all sorts of ways that quality of life there beats quality of life in the city.  I just don't want to make the tradeoffs on the negative side of city living without the benefits.

Montgomery does not aspire to be Conroe- it is a playground with excellent golf and water sports and a small town feel to it (or at least it had that feel 10 years ago when I was in school here).

You are missing the point on the Conroe comparisson BD as that is exactly my point- Conroe sucks at what it is- I.E. a city of 30k while Montgomery is good at what it is, a smaller town playground type place.

Of course you don't get the insult- you think STL is a perfectly pleasant place to live.

See the point of the joke is that someone who thinks STL is a great place to live would probably enjoy a vacation to the shithole that is the sooner state. Though having to explain a joke to a dimwitted friend often causes it to lose some of its meaning.

Good point on the lawyer bit alkie- I think you have to be a top 3% to get that one though.

Wulawhorn - now you are just getting bitter.  And you miss sarcasm.  Unless I had some good friends there, a nice house, a cool kid, a lovely wife, etc., etc., Oklahoma would be a terrible place to visit as far as I know.

I thought you mentioned you could be zen-like anywhere, and now you are joking that going on vacation to Oklahoma is dumb.  Yikes, what did they teach at Wash U?  I'll have to talk to my friends in the legal department to make sure simple businessmen-not-lawyers shouldn't get in, because their reasoning and debating skills are not that great afterwards.

You still are not getting my point as I am not claiming to have some zen like quality where I can live anywhere.  What I'm saying is that I can be happy living in a suburb, a rural area, or a city, but not any city.   If I live in one of these places I need it to be a GOOD city, GOOD burb, or GOOD rural area.  Neither STL nor Oklahoma meet this standard, thus the joke and why it was funny.

Clearly whatever degree you received from Wash U did not require analytical thinking or reading comprehension.

I got your joke how you intended it, I just thought you must have not read the entire thread.  What would have made more sense would be to say "I bet St. Louisans vacation in Oklahoma".  But you didn't, you jackanape.  I hope you and Wulawhorn have a good time circle-jerking about this thread.  You both seem pretty dumb.  What do you do for a living anyway?

Seriously- how can you make it through life and be this dense all at the same time- I would wager that you have to breathe through your mouth.

BD- that is some funny shit right there- born in Oklahoma. I hope you got out as quickly as you could.  I can now never look at you the same way again.

My parents are both from texas. Their parents are both from Texas. They both went to college in texas. They both went to law school in texas. All of a sudden, they have the bright idea "why don't we move to oklahoma and have kids?"

ALMOST IMMEDIATELY after my youngest brother is born, we move back to texas (I was 6).

It's like they were playing a joke on us.

Less if I thought I could watch that man in a wig with the huge tits named Jeanne.

Burn that dungheap of a city to the ground, so all we hear are the wailings of their men and the lamentations of their women.

It's time for biggio and the boys to rape and pillage their way through that shithole of a town.

I've never made an issue of where I went to school- nor used it to make a point anywhere.  The only reason I still have this handle is b/c it was my first handle on Longhornfanzone (may it rest in peace) while I was actually in school.  I kept the handle over here b/c there is some spillover on the boards, and people I tailgate with at Football games know me as this monicker.

You obviously have very little sense of humor and you are now boring the shit out of me.  Have fun watching the game tonight in your shit ass city, and I hope that we both have results that we like.

No, he did not.

That was a sad day for me when all that happened as I considered Wheeler to be a friend of mine. I had met him at an away game in Iowa State where he had a flask no liquor, and I had liquor and no flask.  We sat together and were at many of the same road trips etc.  I was sad the way that all went down, and sad that there is no more LFZ.

Wheeler stealing money doesn't make any sense to me, as I have personally seen him spend thousands of dollars on tickets, food, beer, gas and tailgates in order to make others happy.  I guarantee you that he is well behind in the over all scheme of things as relates to a money out/ money in basis.  I'm not sure what he's up to, but hope that he's doing well.  For those who paid for a bus trip and didn't get it I feel very sorry, and it was a sad day for all of us that called LFZ home when the place shut down.

I always thought that Wheeler was a stand up guy though I know this is not the general consensus.   What happened there is so strange to me, b/c, like I said it was so out of character for a guy who invested so much money in other people's happiness.  Strange and sad days all the way around on the break up of LFZ.  I still to this day do not get it.

Quote:

Living in STL for 3 years at law school caused me to lose a TON of respect for STL fans.  When the Rams won the super bowl my first year up there it was clear that the town had a football IQ of 65 or so.  I heard people in sports bar's asking questions like - Why is Marshal Faulk returning kickoffs for us and such (hint- he wasn't).

I won't even start to wade through this thread, so I'll only respond to this as it's a great post.

1.  I think Marshall Faulk is a sure-fire hall of famer/top 5 all time running back if he plays for anybody EXCEPT Shit Louis.  Mike Martz wasted his best years by passing 60 times a game, and using Faulk as a decoy.  As is, he probably won't even make it.

2.  You're right on in your description of the city, especially about its "comical inferiority complex to Chicago".  However, you left out all the depressing post industrial revolution squallor, with whole urban blocks of vacant factories and offices.
