Lost in all this...
« on: October 17, 2005, 11:30:23 am »
If someone had told me Sunday morning that the game would end up as a 2-1 Astros win, I would have laughed.  I figured the good guys would have to plate 6 or 7 to get a win.  Kudos to Backe, who really nutted up and pitched far better than I hoped for.  This season didn't go as well for him as I wished after last year's post-season, but he came to play yesterday and spotted his stuff about as well as he can.  Also,  great performances by GalloQuallsWheelerLidge, especially Qualls, who had been giving up runs with regularity toward the end of the season.

Agree with most.  Kudos to Backe for the solid effort, he sure slips out of jams well most of the time.  Regarding his season, it turned out well for an emerging pitcher that has only been pitching *anywhere* for 5 years.  +.500 record, 150 IP, high-4 ERA.  Expecting anything else would be unrealistic.  Give him a couple of additional years of seasoning and, to quote No?, juneberno?
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.

And he's only been pitching for five years.

referring mostly to the injury and resulting control problems.  Without that he would have come much closer to reaching the potential shown yesterday and last year in this same series.

Backe lives on controlling the breaking ball and offspeed.  Cuzzi helped him yesterday, but he, Maddux like, kept putting the ball where it was being called.

Show of hands on who was thinking along with Garner when he put Gallo in.  Certainly not me, hence the day job.

Backe seems to thrive on pressure.  He is at his best in the Big Game situation.  He steps up to the level he is capable of, and does so with shocking intensity.  Guys like Backe inspire the whole team.  I was at Game 5 last year, and from that moment on I have been a Backe Backer.

When I heard Garner talk about how he almost pulled him in the 5th and that he was concerned about his control, I understood why.  But at the time, I thought, "we're really grinding now."

If they could bottle and sell whatever mojo they put on Gallo I'd fork over a hefty sack of wampum.  He was getting mashed earlier this year with the Express, now he's rock solid.  His turn around has kinda been off the radar, but since Tony Saprano was such a disappointment in the lefty specialist role, my man siezed the opportunety and ran with it.

He was squeezing the life out of Ausmus' bat during the bottom of the 9th in Game #4 against the Braves.  Then Brad took it to the plate with two out...
