Burke over Biggio tonight?
« on: October 13, 2005, 10:30:18 am »
Tough call, but with Biggio's 0-14 track record against Mulder and 0-3 last night maybe the new Killer B, Chris Burke is the way to go.  Would also provide us a veteran home run bat off the bench.

Not going to happen.

Burke's last two at-bats have been great, but no.

I would consider putting him in place of Lane, but that is probably just because I don't like Lane.

Nope.  What I am more concerned with was the three consecutive at bats for Berkman and Ensberg...three ground outs hit eggsactly the same way...Berkman three grounders to 2B and Ensbergs three choppers to third...and then what the hell was in Viz's mind swinging on the first freaking pitch.  For crying out loud...coming off the bench and taking that hack on the first pitch sucked.  Granted for some reason every pitch that practically short hopped the plate was being called a strike might have had something to do it, but knowing that you are that Bagwell was on deck, you would think he might try and take a pitch.

Oh yea...didn't mean to highjack your thread...Biggio will be back on tonight.  Burke provides much more of an off the bench option for Garner, he can come in and play anywhere if need be.  That being said...to your comment, do you want a guy coming in to pinch hit a pitcher that he has a terrible track record against?  I predict that if Biggio doesn't take him deep on the first pitch, he's going to try and drop a bunt down the 3b line.

Lane has been killing me of late.  He has always looked terrible at the plate when he doesn't get hits--and he hasn't been getting many.  He looks like he is swinging an ogre club up there at the dish

I think it might even got back to Burke's last three ABs being great.  Didn't he have a double in game 2 against ATL?

In any case...I'm playing Bidge.

Biggio 2b
Taveras cf
Berkman 1b
Ensberg 3b
Lane rf
Burke lf
Everett ss
Ausmus c
Oswalt p

He looks terrible at the plate when he does get hits.  There's only one word needed to describe how Lane plays baseball:  ugly.

My favorite time of the game is when the hacks at the first 3 pitches with runners on and making no attempt to get close to the ball...such a warm fuzzy feeling that is.  He looks worse than Berkman hacking from the right side.

So, not to jump too far ahead, ah hell let's jump.  Is Brooks Conrad the heir apparant at second and Burke high profile trade bait, or has Burke proven to Purpura that he's worth holding onto?

Look for the 40-man moves this off-season.  If Conrad isn't added to the 40-man, he likely never will be.  If he's added to the 40-man, who knows what will happen.  I don't think either Burke or Conrad are going to be the regular Astros second baseman though.  By the time Biggio retires, no earlier than after the 2007 (3000 hit) season both Burke and Conrad will be 28 for the 2008 season.  At the same time, Zobrist will be ready (if he hits AA and AAA pitching), and who knows what trades and FA signings will happen between now and then.

It's tough to get info from the Astros org right now.  Everyone is focused on the playoffs with a few working the AFL.  Noone really wants to talk about anything else.

lots of teams want Conrad, i hear.

how on earth can anyone criticise Berkman's DP AB? he was right on a hanging slider and hit the shit out of it. boggles my mind.

I'm not surprised.  I'm a bit surprised the Astros haven't worked him at 3rd, LF, RF, 1B.  He's hit well enough, with power, to be looked at as a good utility guy at least, IMO.

I wouldn't lay any money on this, but my feeling is they're going to keep Burke as a utility guy for next season rather than deal him.

On the screws.  Could easily have drove in two, except that it was hit so hard it might've only scored one.

Berkman was interviewed after the game and said he wouldn't do anything differently in that at-bat.  He got the pitch he wanted and did what he wanted to with it.  Alphabet just happened to be standing right in the way.

i don't think there is much to criticize in last nights game.

The ball didn't go our way.  If we have 2 opportunities to break the game open against Carpenter every game, I can take that any day.

It was a made-to-order grand slam pitch.  He choked.  Should have swung up more or something.  He's been in a terrible slump since the 8th inning Sunday.  He was able only to double in the 10th after that, then double last night before predictably grounding into the DP.  This lack of production is maddening.  Can we trade him for Ortiz in the winter?  Ortiz is black, but he's a Hispanic black, so that should work for the Astros.

Thoughts?

Unbelievable!

That you suggest he should have swung UP??
