TiVo Alert: The Chris Burke Game on ESPN Classic
« on: October 11, 2005, 02:43:36 am »
Just heard on Baseball Tonight that they will be airing the Game on ESPN Classic on Tuesday.  They gave the time as 1:00, but I imagine that will be EST.  So set the VCRs/TiVos for Noon.

Hell if I know. I went to ESPN Classic's Web page and it isn't even listed as currently showing. My Cable guide still has the current show listed as NFL Yearbook: 1984 Pittsburgh Steelers.

I think they usually repeat their daytime programming the middle of the night, but don't really watch enough ESPN Classic to be sure.

Have you ever seen advertising for any ESPN Classic programming?  I don't think I have.  Did you expect them to page you when it was going to air?

You could always go THIS route...
"Ground ball right side, they're not gonna be able to turn two OR ARE THEY, THROW, IS IN TIME!!! WHAT AN UNBELIEVABLE TURN BY BRUNTLETT AND EVERETT, AND THEY CUT DOWN MABRY TO END THE GAME, AND THE ASTROS LEAD THIS NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES THREE GAMES TO ONE!!!!!"

How is that legal?  Isn't that MLB-owned data?

It's not legal at all... but auctions like that go on all the time.

There have already been NINE copies sold on eBay.  DVDs of Super Bowls are CONSTANTLY being sold.  The sheer volume of eBay auctions must make it impossible to police, if they even have an interest in doing so.

That wasn't because ebay took it down. The buyer used "Buy it now" and ended the auction early.

Yeah, noticed that. Don't think that eBay wont come down on these folks. It is in DIRECT violation of MLBs intellectual property rights and eBay is just as liable as the seller, and buyer, for that matter.

I'll bet even the copyright announcement was left in the DVD.

The great irony of it all is that even though I knew it was going to be on ESPN Classic, I could not tape it--I do not have TiVo and my VCR is in its death throes.  I cannot actually pre-program it to record anything, I have to be present to actually press the record button.  I will keep out my eagle eye for any future airings--I am sure the Game will be shown at least a few times in the coming days.

It's loosely edited for our viewing pleasure. They jumped from the end of the fourth to the top of the seventh, but the innings they show are intact. Also, in between big innings, the BBTN crew is shown "analyzing" the game.

There is another way.  You can get a tape of the game from someone, send it to Gizzmonic, and then never see it again.

Sure thing.  The BBTN guys causually mentioned it as they ran out of time, and I didn't see anything about it on TV Guide.com or anything.  I knew folks would want a chance to get a copy of this game for posterity.  This is the kind of game you could watch over and over again--it's like a perfect sports movie.

In fact, ESPN Classic should add music from "The Natural" during Burke's HR, and put the scene in slow-mo.

Enjoy the game with your son!  It will be great to watch, even though we already know what happens!

Along the same lines, I'm considering actually buying a download of the game from MLB.com ($3.95). Has anyone ever done that before? What are the restrictions? I'd like to put it on a DVD (only for personal use), potentially along with other key games from this season/ postseason, but I'm afraid they wouldn't allow that. It says you can burn to a CD, but what about DVD? Has anyone had experiences with this scam... I mean "feature" on MLB.com?

Personal use is fine. You can do what you want with it, as far as altering its medium. Dissemination for profit is the no-no.

I've been watching the game at lunch on Classic and I cannot believe how many of the plays I forgot about.  Taveras' catch against the left field bullpen cage where he and Berkman almost collide was a great fucking catch.  I also forgot how many missed opportunities the Braves had.  They had men on base in almost every inning!  I will not miss Andruw Jones' constant fucking smirk.  I don't know why he bothers me so much but he does.  LaRoche does too.  He likes to think he's a badass.

I made the purchase last night and now have the game downloaded on my computer.  Very easy process.

Need to go out and buy a blank DVD-R so I can burn a copy.  Plan on doing that this afternoon.  Tried to burn to a CD-R but the damn game is 900+ MB so it wouldn't fit.

Wow, Backe was warming up Ausmus' bat before he hit. I read that in the Chron (Ausmus was quoted as saying to Backe, they've been hitting you all day, why don't you rub my bat), but I didn't realize they were showing it on TV before Brad went to bat. That's awesome.

I've never watched the broadcast of a game I've been to before, with all the added theatre of this game, it's quite a treat.

Windows Media. And it's Digital Rights Managed so you can only play it on 3 different computers. You have to be connected to the internet to play it the first time and once you've done that on 3 different computers, you're done.

You might be able to find a way to burn it onto a DVD but it would be quite a hack.

Actually, I got the impression from that FAQ page that you could burn it to a TV quality DVD if you had the proper conversion software. Is that not true?

Well, technically it's true, although they don't say that specifically. They say that is how DVDs are made. I don't know of any comercially available conversion program that will strip DRM from a Windows Media file and convert it to an MPEG2, which is what you need to create a Video DVD.

I just watched a few key moments from my brand-new download of Sunday's game. Absolutely incredible. As someone who couldn't watch the game, only listened to the radio feed, that was great to see.

Interesting note, Rick Sutcliffe actually called the Berkman slam moments before he hit it, citing that Twinkie has owned Farnsworth over their careers.

I was hoping against hope that Twinkie could pull it off, and was shocked to see reality coincide with my most ardent and ferverish reveries.

I watched most of the game of ESPN Classic yesterday, the first time I had watched a game I had already seen.  It was doubly weird in that I was at the game, and so all the angles were different.  The anticipation of Burke's homer was exquisite.

The BBTN crew were surprisingly cool about the game.  They were critical of many of the moves and did not seem to appreciate its greatness.  Oh well, at least they didn't go on to air the Yankee's "awesome comeback" against the Angels in their own Game 4.
