Big-Salary Players and Titles
« on: October 02, 2005, 11:25:53 pm »
Of the 90 highest player-salary-seasons (for example, 2004 Manny Ramirez's salary would be one salary-season), how many won a WS (during that year)?

Don't look it up.  I'll give the answer in a little while.

Well, I figured what with ZERO people playing, I'd let it go.

The answer is FOUR.  And 3 of them were on last year's Red Sox team.  The other was Bernie Williams on the 2000 Yankees.

That is PRECISELY what I mean.

Unfortunately, I think this year's Jeff Bagwell is on the list.  Not good.

So does this mean the White Sox are going to win it all this year?

I'm just pointing out the facts.

Of the 90 highest paid player-seasons BEFORE this year (so it's not like there were a bunch of '05 salaries on there that obviously couldn't have won it yet), only 4 of those players won a ring, and 3 were on one team.

"Ground ball right side, they're not gonna be able to turn two OR ARE THEY, THROW, IS IN TIME!!! WHAT AN UNBELIEVABLE TURN BY BRUNTLETT AND EVERETT, AND THEY CUT DOWN MABRY TO END THE GAME, AND THE ASTROS LEAD THIS NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES THREE GAMES TO ONE!!!!!"

Schilling, Pedro, and Manny last year's RedSox, and Bernie on the 00 Yanks.

Lemme see if I can find that list again.

Right.  Thank you.

The underlying assumption is that the team paid these guys and so had to play scrubs at the other positions to compensate.  Unless we're pining for Jeremy Burnitz, Steve Finley, Moises Alou, or Bobby Abreu (how'd he get in this list?) the Astros didn't have many options.

Another interesting question would be which of these players won a WS in the PREVIOUS year...
