Oh, yeah. NL park. No DH. Greinke hits tomorrow!

NY/Tex rain delay has Astros bumped from ESPN to ESPN3 (apparently that's their phone/tablet app).

National League inning there. Infield hit, stolen base, but the pitcher up with two outs. Maldonado had a chance and swatted one pretty good but right on a line to 3B.

I usually don't like in-game interviews,  but the Verlander interview on ESPN was good.

They clearly leaned on the Verducci article.

What was the score? Long time (to me) since he did anything in a tight game. Maybe I am forgetting.

Second HR was off position player.

Flyball and 2 strikeouts in the bottom of the frame.

ESPN felt obligated to show Yelich's bare ass from their The Body issue of their stupid magazine.   I thought it went under?

Tied at 1, end 3.

Yep.  When he fouls off the 1-strike pitch, the at bat is over.  You've got him.  He's getting 1/3rd the chance as anyone else.  That's an area he drastically needs to improve.

Nice bunt, balk, and a swinging bunt put runners on the corners with 1 out.

Strom to the mound.  Bear down, Cole.

Cole fights back from 2-0 and carves up Gamel for the K.

Blum has a good description in the promo for the ATT telecast.  "Lag" is keeping the hands back, staying behind the ball, "drag" is dropping the head and sort of slinging the bat through the zone.  Blummer ought to know.

Avoiding a tag is the only time you should slide at 1B, but the last thing I need is Altuve mangling his knee trying to slide at the last second.

Yordan watched a first pitch hittable fastball and and the rest is history.

Brantley sure could get hot again any time, 6 for his last 33.

Nice job by Harris not to get rushed with that come-backer. On to the 9th. Another run or two would be nice.

Not sure what Grandal was grousing about. Runner not breaking up the double play?

4-pitch walk to lead of the B10. No e of them within 3 ft of the plate

An error in the 9th and 2 walks in the 10th allows Yelich to come up with a chance to win the game.

Julia mentioned a few mechanical adjustments they worked on during his rehab.

Above my pay grade to know what those particular adjustments do but they weren't close to hitting anything he threw hard.  He just wasn't close to the plate with several pitches.

Blew the save giving up a game tying HR on an 0-2 pitch  then with two out, fielded a comebacker and nonchalantly lobbed the ball to 1B and made a bad throw for an E1.

His lack of focus almost beat the Astros.

Did we throw a runner out at the plate? He struck out Shaw and stranded the runners. Nothing “almost beat the Astros.” Egregious error for sure. He came back and ended the inning.

He had to face - and strike out - another hitter in the inning w/ 2 on base.
Granted, it was a .163 hitter, but it is very tense....
The lack of emotion on his error, and the added runner, popped a few corks on the thread....

Egregious error. What should he have done? Throw his glove? Stomp his foot? Cry? Scream?

No emotion is a sin. You must hate Brantley. How much emotion does Alvarez show? This is not fucking Little League where tantrums are the norm. Osuna struck the next guy out on three pitches to strand the runners.
I liked that. Here he got cursed.

With the season winding down, Osuna has not preformed as well as I had hoped he would but he is still one of the better closers in the league. A homer on a 0-2 pitch is always a shitty thing but it happens all the time. Verlander gave up one in his penultimate start.

It’s not the lack of motion that warranted the swear words from me, it was lack of effort.

Was there the same reaction to Altuve’s lack of effort in Greinke’s game? I don’t remember any “fuck Altuve.” Fuck the lack of effort certainly, but fuck the player? No. Not me, and if this is what the GZ will be, you do not need me here.

Not sure what Grandal was grousing about. Runner not breaking up the double play?
I was wondering about that. Wasn't Altuve right in the baseline? Couldn't the runner have legally taken him out with a slide?

You cannot legally take out the fielder at 2B. You can slide directly into the bag.

I understand the disappointment with Osuna's performance but the tone of the criticism was far too harsh to my taste.  I don't consider his demeanor lack of emotion; I consider it maintaining his composure. Blowing his top on t,he field wasn't going to help him retire the next batter; controlling his emotions and keeping his focus did.  I don't think that the throw to first was lack of effort; he thought that a soft toss was the best way to get the runner out and he didn't execute.
Still and all, Osuna will be the source of much apprehension for as long as the season lasts.

If the runner slides directly into the bag and the fielder is between the runner and the bag, can the runner make contact with the fielder? Or is contact taboo?

The runner has to slide into the bag in a legitimate effort to reach the base, not with the intent of taking out the fielder. If that results in incidental contact, it is not a violation, but just because Bregman (not Altuve) was coming across the bag does not mean he was fair game.  It was a sharp comebacker. Grisham was not in position to slide into the bag so he peeled off. That’s the game today, for better or worse. It seemed like that’s what Grandal was on about, but I don’t know for sure.

I could not figure out his reaction either. The play looked routine and clean.

Was there the same reaction to Altuve’s lack of effort in Greinke’s game? I don’t remember any “fuck Altuve.” Fuck the lack of effort certainly, but fuck the player? No. Not me, and if this is what the GZ will be, you do not need me here.

I had a coach once that said he never had a problem with physical errors, but mental errors were never ok (or something along those lines).

Maybe just a tap of the glove to the chest and a "My bad" or "Lo Siento" toward the dugout would've been nice instead of looking like he just realized that 60 Minutes was going to be late since Sunday Night Football was running late AGAIN.

and the coach to whom you may be referring at least once each year had a player lob a ball to first instead of “step and throw.”  I do not know if a high lob is a physical or a mental error. If his sin was not showing that he cares enough, ok. Perhaps he should have done as you suggested. He was stoic. He came back to get the next hitter on three pitches, and I imagine Hinch will take care of any perceived lack of competitiveness. I also do not know what he said to Hinch or to his teammates in the dugout or in the clubhouse. Maybe he said “my bad” to them.

Not you necessarily because I always thing the best of you, but much of the profane venom on here, in my opinion, is directed at his past, not his performance. No one on this team loses composure because of a mistake, not even a big home run or a crucial high lob from SS, and that is good. That coach you had also did not tolerate negative shows of emotion or fits of pique.

Lollygagging a routine out on a speedy runner because you elected to not hustle is a mental error pure and simple.

If he fields, turns , and throws a strike to first, ballgame over and he doesn't have to strike out the next guy with 2 on.

100 percent mental to me.

And who gives a shit what other people's motivations are for being pissed. Osunu fucked up, stupidly. Giving a team 4 outs is never a good thing.

Happy ending is he came back and got the next guy, but that doesn't make a really terrible mental error any better.

My anger related to his stoic response to his error was wrong.
I can never "unsee" Giles beating himself publicly for his mistake.  It was/is painful to watch.
Thankful Osuna is on the team and has taken full advantage of his 2nd chance.  Tho a gifted athlete, it is all to easy to forget that he is human, just like me.

I wasn't wanting him to punch himself in the face or punt his glove in to the stands. But a simple acknowledgement that you fucked up is a good thing for everyone involved. A chest pat "my bad".

I agree with everything you say here except “who gives a shit about motivation for posts.” I do.

My instruction to a pitcher who made that egregious mistake would be: “Forget it. Focus on the hitter and get him.” I think that is what Osuna did.

ETA: I never questioned your or any of my players’ desire or competitiveness. I had total confidence in their wanting to win and to do their best. If I doubted that, they would not play.

Agree, but we spectators have the advantage of being detached from the action and reactionary in the stands or in  front of a screen.
I wonder if behind his blank look he might have been thinking, "What did I just DO!", not believing the answer.
Can't get into his head and it's easy to 2nd guess.
Three FASTBALLS "quickly" got the last out of the inning - that was effective use and aim of his anger.
