Playoff Experience
« on: August 08, 2019, 04:09:39 pm »
If the Astros make the playoffs this year, they should do very well if playoff experience means anything. Of the 26 players that will most likely form the pool from which the playoff roster will be composed, 24 have played in multiple playoff series and 11 have played in a World Series. Only two, Alvarez and Diaz, have no playoff experience.
The Position Players:

PLAYER                  PLAYOFF SERIES

Springer                   7 including 1 World Series

Altuve                           7 including 1 World Series

Brantley                  3

Bregman                  5 including 1 World Series

Correa                          7 including 1 World Series

Gurriel                          5 including 1 World Series

Reddick                   10 including 1 World Series

Chirinos                  2

Marisnick                       4

Maldonado                  2

My opinion, based a little on personal experience and not only fandom, is the best team does not always win it all. The hottest team does. Playoff experience is helpful, but if we get on a roll like this team does, look out.

Hard to imagine any team could come close matching the Astros' experience but that guarantees nothing. They still have to play the games and as you say if they run into a buzz saw like Boston last year they don't have much of a chance.

Maybe Houston will be the buzz saw.

Of course there are no guarantees, but if this Astros squad is healthy, they can seriously compete with any buzz saw that might come along.

Nitpick:  MLB doesn't have "playoffs". It has a Postseason.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I would argue that the wildcard is a playoff to reach the Postseason

No argument with me.  The argument is with MLB.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to participate in the GZ in the last week or so.

I just keep remembering 2017, when Cleveland was the hottest thing going: 22 or whatever in a row in September, great pitching, etc, etc. And then they quickly and quietly slipped beneath the waves in the ALDS. They hit their cooling-off period at a very inopportune (for them) time.

Was it that or just a case of the Yankees playing great baseball? I honestly don't remember, because I don't think I watched a single game of that series. But I know the Yankees were a tough out in the ALCS.

I think a bit of both.  That is my current worry.  This team is hitting on almost all cylinders right now.  I would prefer them hitting on all cylinders starting the last week of September through October.

Indians bats were cold and there was some review incident in game 2 I cant remember the details. Changed the trajectory of the series.

And if memory serves didn't Cleveland win the first two games?

I think the review thing actually went against them, as what should've been called a strike three swinging against Lindor was called a foul and Girardi didn't review it. Then boom home run.

Right. They scored 5 runs the rest of the way (including a 1-0 shutout) with losses from Miller, Bauer, and Kluber.

Yep. A hot streak then is crucial.
