Urquidy pitching.

Got ahead of Fletcher 0-2, eventually threw a center cut ball (3rd of the AB) that was drilled for a double.

Trout got ahead 2-0 but struck out.

Ohtani goes 3-0 then 3-2, finally rolls one over 3-1, Fletcher advanced to 3rd

Calhoun Ks swinging

Mid 1
No score

Berkman droning on, but he's spot on about kids playing year round.

Yep.

I know a family who put their kid in a select league because they were told he wouldn't make the varsity team if he didn't play select.

Kid was in the 5th grade.

My nephew is the quintessential year-round player these days.  He's a left handed pitcher, and he's really good...just committed to play at Baylor after finishing his junior year in HS.  But he's played probably 40 games already since school's been out.  I'm afraid to ask how many innings he's pitched.

This is a pretty ugly half-inning so far.
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed

Berkman hates the "check swing" strike.  Says if it's not a full swing all the way through, it shouldn't count.  What could possibly go wrong with that thinking?

A Kemp-Alvarez outfield isn't exactly great defensive combo

I hope Yordan moves back to DH soon.

Didn't have a lot of interest in catching that one.

T5:

James in

Simmons with a  seeing eye single past SS
Simmons steals 2B
Pujols strikes out swinging, tried to check it, but couldn't...Berkman thinks it shouldn't count though
Thaiss...3-0...3-1...3-2...strikes out swinging
Lucroy...0-2...triples to LCF...Alvarez nonchalantly jogged after it, and it just misses his glove...Simmons scores
Rengifo walks
Fletcher...3-2...strikes out looking

7-2

Right. A couple f rag-arms. At least Kemp doesn’t look lost, though. He covers the ground and throws to the correct base.

There are 3 types of announcers in the world.   Those who can count and those who can't.

Well, I have to give White credit for putting up a battle there.
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed

B5:

Bregman...3-0...3-1...3-2...strikes out swinging at ball four at the chin
Brantley singles to LF
Passed ball, Brantley to 2B
Gurriel...full count...walks
Alvarez lines one up the middle, takes Ramirez's glove off and goes into CF (the ball, not the glove), Brantley scores, Gurriel to 2B...ball was s-m-o-k-e-d
White...battling...bounces to 3B, the ball hits the bag and bounces in foul territory, Gurriel scores, Alvarez to 3B as White ends up with an RBI double

That chases Ramirez, Anderson in

Reddick, pinch hitting for Stassi...Reddick's swing hits Lucroy's mitt, ump misses it...Hinch out but it's not reviewable, so Reddick has to battle on...quickly 0-2...strikes out swinging at a pitch in the dirt, has some choice words for the idiot behind the plate
Kemp...3-0...walks
Springer...full up...strikes out swinging

Astros leave the bases loaded, but pick up a pair...7-4 Angels

On talking too much, just switched to the Angels broadcast to hear complete silence b/t pitches during Bregman's AB.
Refreshing!  "Audio" breathing room!
Just crowd noise and the crack of the bat on the fly to CF....

Challenged Trout with center cut fastball...didn't end well.

Maybe they should consider not pitching to one of the greatest modern baseball players when the game is tied in the 8th, or at least have a strategy that includes pitches not down the middle.

Brantley singles to LF
Gurriel singles to RF, Brantley to 2B
Wild pitch, Brantley to 3B, Gurriel to 2
Alvarez singles to LCF, Brantley scores, Gurriel scores
Marisnick pinch runs for Alvarez
White singles to LF, Marisnick to 2B

Buttrey out, Robles in

Reddick...3-0...walks
Chirinos...infield in...hits a bullet back up the middle and stabbed by Robles...man, bad luck...that's two runs saved
Springer...infield backs up...flies out F9, Marisnick tags, throw comes to the plate and Jake plows Lucroy…and scores...Lucroy still down...play under review...Marisnick called out

We're still tied at 10-10

The throw was coming in from RIGHT field.

There was no reason for Lucroy to be where he was,  without the ball,  other than to block the beasepath.

The quote from right field called Lucroy up the line. There is no reasonable expectation for Jake to be able to react to that last moment shift by Lucroy. Just a bad call.

Obviously this will be dissected ad nauseum.

Worth noting Jake was running 29 ft/s.

All that took place very,  very quickly.   And I get why they ruled that way and hope Lucroy recovers quickly.

The replays clearly showed that Lucroy slid in front of Marisnick after Jake had already swerved to the inside.  He got in Jake’s way, not the other way around.

No reason for Jake to cut inside at the last minute except to initiate contact.  The rule is clear.  The catcher must offer a lane, and the runner must take it.  Like it or not, that's the rule.  The runner cannot change his angle to the plate and initiate contact.

I’m not surprised they ruled him out, but Jake did not move inside to initiate contact.  He was headed straight for Lucroy initially, swerved inside to avoid him, and then Lucroy slid to his right and was in Jake’s path again.

Yeah, I thought he should have been safe at first, but after checking the replay again on mlb.tv, I think you're right.  Jake had a lane to the outside, but before Lucroy even had the ball, Jake went inside right at Lucroy.

The throw was to Lucroy's left.  The collision happened entirely inside the baseline.  Marisnick moved there at the last second.  Like it or not, that's against the rules.

HH, I'm sure your explanation is what they went with.

I would only question why a catcher shoulder ever be in the basepath on a ball coming from RF.  On the plate?  Ok.  On the chalk?  No.

But that's not the rule and the inside move cost them.

HH, I'm sure your explanation is what they went with.

I would only question why a catcher shoulder ever be in the basepath on a ball coming from RF.  On the plate?  Ok.  On the chalk?  No.

But that's not the rule and the inside move cost them.

Because that's where the throw took him.  He gave a lane to the runner.  That's what he's supposed to do.

I think it’s the right call. If Jake goes to the outside he’s safe and there’s no collision.

What a comeback.

This team weathered a spate of injuries pre-ASG and remains in good position.   There's a lot of work to be done,  but they deserve good vibes during the break.
