Well, if my mind isn't playing tricks on me, he ain't dead yet. But it's looking pretty grim.
Everyone's talking, few of them know
The rest are pretending, they put on a show
And if there's a message I guess this is it
Truth isn't easy, the easy part's shit

RIP Bushwick.

Yeah, I'm saddened. That little fucker was something else.

But, but, he lives (in a time if his own). Yeah, where were you?

You're gonna miss him.

I was working from home when I got the news from a friend and pretty much started playing his music from that point on until into the night. My wife came home from work and I was on the couch, Easter Everywhere cranked up, and she said, “I KNEW this was what I’d see when I got home.”

After a while I started telling her about Roky. She knew a little, but not a lot, enough to know I was a fan but not much else. It was nice going over some of that stuff with her. I got my copy of Openers and showed that to her and told her a few more stories when it started to sink in how many times he’d been counted out but would struggle through and become reborn again. He was always dependent on others and somehow this changing core would shoo away the parasites and get him on a better path. There were many times that it seemed impossible but he was a force, and it was so unbelievable and unexpected and really, truly joyous that he had that last fifteen or so years where he was happy and kinda self-sufficient.

Yeah, I’ll miss him but he was always otherworldly, always like someone between dimensions or whatever. He was here, but he kinda wasn’t, and now he isn’t here but he kinda is. I for sure have never known anyone like him and don’t expect that I will ever see his kind again.

I'm in love with rock and roll and I'll be out all night.

When I was in Lubbock, "The Explosives", a band from Austin, would frequently play at a club called "Fat Dawg's". I, along with my circle of friends, got friendly with a couple of members, Cam and Freddie, who would tell tales of Roky. Years later, they would tour with a resurgent Roky. Good memories.

"You're Gonna Miss Me" is the greatest rock and roll song of all time.

Did Cam goof around with the Austin All-Stars (the '80s version) as Sheikh Yahbooti or something? Or am I mixing him up with somebody else?

I don't think so, but I could be wrong. Isn't Sheik Yerbooti a Frank Zappa thing?

The Explosives used to open with Cam at the microphone doing a howler monkey impression segueing into the instrumental song "Headhunter". Fickin' awesome!

Yes, I think Zappa also did a Yerbouti thing. Probably quite a few other people, too. I have memories of somebody in the All-Stars standing up there in a kaffiyeh and behaving stereotypically, and I thought it was Cam, but I could very easily be wrong.

Zappa had an album (a great one, hell, they all were) named Sheik Yerbouti. There may have been a Zappa tribute band by that name.

On my popular musician/baseball fantasy team (fantasy like in my head fantasy, not fantasy like rotisserie), Bushwick Bill was always my leadoff hitter.

And a great one, too.
