Jose Urquidy
« on: May 22, 2019, 06:38:11 am »
I worked the RR game with Mike last night, and Urquidy started in Brady Rodgers’ place. Only one game, I know, but he was damned impressive. 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R (earned), 1 BB (HPU screwed him on this), and 12 K. His FB got up to 95, and he had a sharp-breaking slider. He is from Mexico, and no doubt the Bus Ride folks can tell us more. He is worth watching in future appearances.

Alvarez did not play (dammit). Tucker was 2-4 with an impressive RBI double driven hard down the line in LF. Fisher hit a 400+ foot moonshot homer, Straw had two hits and a hard line out to CF. He also made a very good barehand pickup and throw from SS for the final out. Reed even got in the act with a multiple hit game and 3 RBI.

Apropos to nothing, I think Mayfield is a really good player. He plays 3B, SS, and 2B well. Other orgs should want him as a utility player. I wonder if they do.

Agree about Mayfield.
Everyone's talking, few of them know

Glad to hear that Urquidy looked like someone to watch for on the mound, the organization can never have too many.  When I saw him, the slider was just average, but his fastball was good.  Also good to hear that Tucker can go anywhere but his pull side.  He has to develop that to make it, IMO.

My son was actually wondering if Mayfield would get a shot if DIaz had gone on the DL IL.  He is a very useful utility guy.

Here is a scouting report on Jose Hernandez-Urquidy

Good report. That is the pitcher I saw. He has dropped the Hernandez.

Me too. I actually thought they might lose him in the rule 5. He looks good at all three IF positions and handles the bat well with some pop. He would at least be a valuable extra piece in a trade, I think.

As I understand it you saw the best Urquidy has to offer.  His usual self will typically end up with a line more like what Rodgers would have.  Duman's link to the report I think nails down the general consensus.  This is a broken record from me but Luhnow wants the Mexican market so I expect that for any pitcher like him Urquidy will be at the top of the promotion list.

I too have thought Mayfield could be a good mlb utility player and thought he would have been picked up in the Rule 5 draft last year.  Perhaps this winter he will be if he's not dealt this summer.

If he pitches like he did last night, the promotion will be deserved.

Thanks for the report on Urquidy.

Mayfield looked great in spring training. Broadcasters called him Super Jack.

Urquidy's 12 Ks is reportedly a RR franchise record.

I would wager that's as a AAA team. Pretty sure Oswalt and or Carlos Hernandez tossed off a few superior games in its AA days.

I believe I recall Oswalt striking out 15 in his Express debut.

I feel as though Carlos Hernandez had large strikeout game also.

But those teams were AA not AAA.  Maybe that is the difference.

At the only Express game I've ever been to Hernandez struck out 16 and Jason Lane hit two home runs.
