Indians @ Astros, April 26, 2019

McHugh looked pretty sharp and struck out the side, but he still took 25 pitches to get out of the 1st. Wasn't helped by Lindor's AB, in which he fouled off a lot of pitches in a 10-pitch AB. And he "hit" Ramirez with one of his patented back-foot sliders.

Astros with a couple of 2-out hits in the first, but leave two in scoring position.

McHugh with two more strikeouts and a fly to center.

Middle 2, 0-0.

Reddick with a lead-off double into the RF corner. If he's going to hit from corner to corner, he's going to be hard to defend.

Yuli singles to RF, but there was enough uncertainty that Reddick can only advance to 3rd. 1st and 3rd, no outs.

Brantley grounds out to 1st to end the inning. Too bad, because Kluber was laboring.

End 2, Astros lead 2-0.

Yeah, a crooked number against Kluber is a good inning, but I still feel a little disappointed. I’m looking at you Tyler White.

Chirinos singles up the middle, then Springer drives a ball into the gap in RCF. Kipnis's relay is horrible, and Chirinos scores.

Chirinos needs to unhook that bass boat he’s dragging around, but he read that ball really well. Good base running.

After that strikeout, Bregman is only hitting .250 with runners in scoring position so far.  Of course it's still early, and he's a slow starter.

McHugh cannot stand having a lead.

God damn it, McHugh gives up another solo homer to tie the game.

Middle 5, all tied up 3-3.

All Cleveland runs in the series so far have come on solo home runs. I suppose that's not the absolute worst news in the world, but it's annoying nonetheless.

I think this decision about what to do when it's necessary to call up Alvarez is getting easier.

Meanwhile, Correa flies out to the right fielder with his back to the fence.

The Indians do not have a hit w RISP this series.

Or Kemp, since Alvarez is LH and will be playing DH/LF.

Kemp is much more versatile. White and Alvarez offer the same thing on defense: nothing. And, in my opinion, Kemp has a much better history of bringing quality ABs. From where I sit, Kemp vs. White is an easy decision. But I don't sit in the front office.

Of the 2, White has hit for power at times (remember?  gets harder every day) which is more marketable than Kemp's skill set.

But I suspect it would be prospects for either.

Of course, what really matters is what others are willing to offer for either of the two. And if they'll only offer an autographed photo of Pete Incaviglia in exchange for White, you may have to dangle Kemp.

The Cardinals spent a first on him and paid him $11MM for one year. The Fins spent a third basically and will pay him $6MM over three years. Unless they cut him, I guess, which is always a possibility.

Kemp has value as a pinch runner, a guy who has proven to give professional ABs, also has defensive flexibility by playing LF, CF and 2B competently.

White only gives you hitting, in theory. Evan Gattis but less good.

Kemp is much more valuable, to me anyway

Sure, if you're just trying to field a team and minimize salary, I guess that's ok. But if you're actually trying to win, it's still a whiff. Doesn't matter how bad Arizona's judgement was.

Josh lines out to CF, stranding two.

End 7, Indians lead 4-3.

Sure, if you're just trying to field a team and minimize salary, I guess that's ok. But if you're actually trying to win, it's still a whiff. Doesn't matter how bad Arizona's judgement was.

The Dolphins haven't tried to win since 1990 or so.

Chirinos needs to unhook that bass boat he’s dragging around, but he read that ball really well. Good base running.
Unlike Bregman, who with two outs in the first jogged from first to second watching Brantley’s ball toward the left field wall. He didn’t put it in gear until he was rounding second. With two outs, he should have been busting it from the crack of the bat and he probably scores. Hopefully that potential run won’t hurt us.

Just posted about this in the Alvarez thread. Much talk on radio today about how Giants are really working the phones for an outfielder. Made me wonder if the had call Luhnow. I love Kemp but he probably has the most trade value. And for all the talk about Alvarez, I think Straw is ready too.

That is a pretty good evaluation to this point.

Coming into tonight, opponents were only hitting .217 against James but he has walked 8 and now given up 4 dingers. His ERA is over 8. Not a good look.

His control has been so much worse than last year. I wonder if being a bullpen guy this year has something to do with it.

Not that I'm anywhere near that level. My whole life I have been terrible when I'm not starting the game, my control goes AWOL and I was always a low velo control guy. James might have the same issue. Just complete speculation

Pretty hard to win to leave 37,000 runners on base and give up 4 homers or was it 5?

Luhnow was singing the Rodgers praises, as he has done for what seems like years now, on his radio show recently.

Rogers has been good. Deetz  has been terrible, including last night. Martin has pitched the best of all the RR pitchers.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.
