Game 3: Astros at Rays, March 29
« on: March 30, 2019, 04:34:40 pm »
Well, I was slacking the first couple of days, so I'll try to be a bit more serious about the effort today. To that end, I'm cracking open the first of the sixer of Karbach Crawford Bock that my wonderful wife bought for me. I hope that it steadies Diaz's nerves.
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

Well  Bregman is paying short and Yuli is playing 3rd, so Diaz shouldn't be too worked up.

Fizzle.

White got worked over and rung up on a check swing,  Kemp grounded sharply into a FC.

That was a REALLY bad at bat by White with a runner in scoring position.

Rays took advantage of balls getting under the corner infielders gloves.

Yuli had to move several feet to get into position for a chance at his.

White on the other hand has mountain range.

Two nights in a row with some seriously questionable strikes to steal Astro baserunners in the 9th.

Kemp's AB last night was completely hijacked.

He would've needed a sheet of plywood to cover the plate after those 2 calls.

Tommy Pham has a very interesting backstory.

We tried to trade for him at the deadline last year, but the Rays outbid us.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

I’m a Pham phan. It’s hard to not like the Rays here.

Tommy Pham has a very interesting backstory.

You peeked my curiosity.
Found this link  https://www.draysbay.com/2018/10/8/17945186/tommy-pham-makes-tampa-bay-rays-a-better-team

...and this quote:
Quote
“The question was if I wish I had it easier or came up rich, would I have wanted that? The more I thought about it my answer is no. I played with a lot of guys coming up who came from a wealthy upbringing and what I remembered most about them is how soft they were. When things got harder for them, they always crumbled. I think where I came from helped me persevere through all my injuries in everything bcuz I seen a lot of guys fold, the most successful ppl in the world came from the smallest beginnings which makes me think it’s not about where you’re from or how you come up but where are you going!”

Thank you.

Everyone's talking, few of them know
The rest are pretending, they put on a show
And if there's a message I guess this is it
Truth isn't easy, the easy part's shit

Good find.

Here's a better one that was found later: https://www.si.com/mlb/2018/04/02/tommy-pham-st-louis-cardinals

There's a Luhnow connection:
Quote
He smarts at how long it took Cardinals management to believe in him, apportioning some blame to his injuries (a torn wrist ligament in 2011, and labrums torn in each shoulder, in ’12 and ’13) and some to the December 2011 departure of scouting director Jeff Luhnow, a champion of Pham’s who left to become the Astros’ general manager. “The front office, I can’t entirely say they were on my side,” Pham says. “I wasn’t drafted by these people.” (He cites John Vuch, the team’s director of baseball administration, as his only remaining ally from the old regime.)

And more background...
Quote
Tawana  (Tommy's Mother) used to be ashamed of the twins’ severe childhoods, she says. After talking it over with Tommy a few years ago, though, she made peace with it. When he was young, she would tell him how easily he could become a statistic—a mixed-race boy born to an incarcerated father and a single, teenage mother. “Some parents care too little; I cared too much,” Tawana says. “I saved Tommy.”

And another Astros' connection:
Quote
Pham wasn’t always so open to learning; he says no coach could break through his hardheadedness until Jeff Albert, now the Astros’ assistant hitting coach, got to him in his fourth year of pro ball. It was late July and Pham’s average was hovering around .200. His high-A team’s game in Lakeland, Fla., was rained out. Pham says, “I was struggling so bad, I said, f--- it, I’m tired of struggling. What do I need to do?” Albert showed him video of his swing compared with proper form. From there, Pham says, he was all but set.

Who knows, he might sign with the Astros as a free agent...
