Frank Robinson has passed at 83

He played RF in the first MLB game I saw in person in Colt Stadium. Always seemed like a class-act as well as great player.

He was a great player. A great hitter, a great outfielder. Triple Crown winner, MVP of both leagues. World Series winner. First black manager. One of the all time  greats.

Robbie was one of those guys that you just looked at in a baseball uniform and immediately had great respect for. Well I did, anyway.

I remember when the Nationals came to DC, him coming in as manager sort of grounded the team when there was a lot of uncertainty in ownership and front office.

Agree with above.

He also seemed like an old school hard ass, in the way that extremely capable/talented people can be (i.e. not just for the hell of it).

He once told a second baseman who asked him why he slid into second so brutally hard, Frank told him to ask his pitcher.

If it makes you feel any better there were seven ink stained wenches that same year who carefully weighed all the evidence and decided that Hank Aaron just wasn't Hall of Fame material.

And let's face it, after 23 long seasons he just BARELY surpassed 750 home runs so you can certainly forgive an abundance of caution from those discerning fellows.

Maybe ballplayers should elect the BBWA HOF members?

Another damn web site with so much extraneous shit on the page that you can't even scroll down to read what you came there for. Site designers really need to get their shit together. The Chron is among the worst offenders.
