Dominican Baseball Article

This is why I pay for the Athletic.  Best writing in sports.  ($)

Quote
Managing a clubhouse — rather than the game — is a big part of being a manager in most places, but Hammock soon realized he was trying to paddle a boat with a pitchfork. Winter league clubhouses do not march to the drumbeat of whoever is sitting in the manager’s office. That guy changes too often. “You’re like a stepdad that’s coming in every year,” he said. “A new stepdad that comes in every year to look over the household, make out lineups and try not to mess up the pitching moves.”

Always ready to go to a game.

I couldn't agree more. I'm almost embarassed to say what I paid for an Athletic subscription, but it's been so good, far surpassing my expectations, that I'd pay multiple what I paid without batting an eye.

It really is that good, huh? I guess I'll have to try it. I'm more frugal than you though, so If I do a free 7-day  trail and then cancel at the end of the trial before the $3.99 a month charge incurs. will they come back with the $2.99 a month offer?

Colonel-These articles are written and edited well. There's no quality comparison between the drivel slapped out there by most newspaper and cable writers today. It's no wonder that it's attracted the best writers. If you enjoy reading quality articles, I'd recommend giving it a trial, your niggardly disposition notwithstanding.

I agree. I have found it more than worth the trial cost. I'm sure I will re-up at the end of the 12-mo. trial at the expanded cost.

I vowed never to pay for content years ago.   Luckily a friend gave me a gift subscription to The Athletic at Christmas.

It's really good.   Hopefully he'll renew it this year.

Sometime around the point that newspapers decided they didn’t need paywalls, we as a society forgot the phrase “you get what you pay for.”

Damn, man. Is this really an issue?

So you never subscribed to a newspaper or magazine, eh?

No.  But I stopped taking the paper 3 years ago and the only magazine I take is about woodworking.   There is so much free content on the internet I couldn't justify paying for news or sports analysis.

As print media has declined I do feel badly for the reporters and writers who have been squeezed out.  Yes, I know that loss of subscribers is a big part of said decline.

Twelve dollars here, Twelve dollars there. After a while it starts to add up to almost real money.
