Boston's Achilles heel being exposed here: their bullpen can't get anybody out.

Man, Leon has blocked several pitches tonight that barely made it to the dirt in front of the plate.

Random notes after Game 1:

Houston recorded 12 hits, their 9th 10+ hit game in the postseason since the beginning of 2017.

George Springer has now hit a home run in five consecutive playoff games dating to last postseason, joining 2004 Carlos Beltran and 2015 Daniel Murphy.

Bregman's homer left his bat at 107.1mph
A list of pitchers off of whom Alex Bregman has hit a postseason home run:
 -Chris Sale (x2)
 -Clayton Kershaw
 -Kenley Jansen
 -Corey Kluber

Corey Kluber's last four postseason games: 15IP, 22H/17ER, 12K:5BB, 9HR. 10.20 ERA / 1.80 WHIP. (this shocked me).
Reddick on his role:
Last postseason, I think I got caught up in trying to be in the spotlight with these guys and try to hit the long ball. In reality, I'm the eight-hole, I'm not here to drive in runs - ironic today - but I'm not there to drive the long ball. I'm there to get on for those guys at the top of the lineup.

Verlander is now 12-6 in the postseason. Most postseason wins, MLB history:
 1. Andy Pettitte: 19
 2. John Smoltz: 15
 3. Tom Glavine: 14
 4. Roger Clemens: 12
 4. Justin Verlander: 12

Houston reliever Hector Rondon, who Hinch said was "very upset" about not making the ALDS roster, did not come onto the field when he was introduced with the team's reserves before the game. He also was not on the field during the national anthem, but did join the team in the dugout for the game.

Cole on being an Astro:
You're not asked to conform to a system. You're asked to use the system to make yourself better. So, from an analytic standpoint, from a scouting report standpoint, from teammates and instructors, there's just a high level of quality here that's ahead of quite a bit of other teams.

Don’t like it?  Play better. I know he’s upset, and I would be too, but he pitched his way off the roster. No need to be a dick about it.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Boston’s bullpen is going to pitch at least 7.1 innings tonight. Price pulled in the 2nd inning, Yanks up 3-0.

Last year was awesome, but it wasn’t “my” Astros.  I’d checked out for a few years before the WS win.

1998...those were my Astros (plus Randy Johnson).  And, yes, I’m still bitter.

Kudos on being bourbon-fueled, but this team is better. It’s distributed differently, and I’m not basing it on post-season success, but this team in properly stacked with fewer holes - notably at starting pitcher (1998 went from the Unit to the Shaner to Lima).  The ‘98 versions of Bagwell, Alou and Ausmus walk onto this team though, as does Johnson.  That’s probably about it for the starting 9 tjough.

This is the only one where I can easily see both sides.  I went with Altuve over his mobility and arm because, otherwise, they’re the same player.

Well, if we’re talking today then I’d say Alou could still get up off the couch, piss on his hands, grab a bat, and be good for a clutch single.

The mlb.com story I saw said that he didn't go out to the bullpen to warm up until 10 minutes before game time - presumably thinking it was another 8:15 or whatever start time, rather than 7:40.

Either way, of course, inexcusable, and you wonder why no one else with the team tried to get him out there sooner. Should never happen in a playoff game.

Apparently their bench coach asked him in the 8th "Can you throw?"

And Romine said "I can try."

The Yankees are carrying themselves like they really don't give a shit. Hicks' "effort" at that single (the first hit of the top of the 3rd) was especially galling.

I think the Astros match up better against the Red Sox, in addition to always being glad to see the Yankees eliminated.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

The Red Sox are plainly a better overall team than the Yankees. The Astros and the Red Sox are plainly the two best teams in the league, and likely in baseball.

The Astros are better than Cleveland, and things broke in the Astros' way during the series, but Cleveland is a very, very good team, perfectly capable of beating New York or Boston in a series of any length, and to act like it was a matter of routine for the Astros to show up and stomp the shit out of them both does Cleveland a disservice and probably fails to appreciate just how good the Astros can be.

Cleveland has two of the top-5 hitters in baseball, 4 200+ K starting pitchers, and a very good supporting cast.  The fact that the Astros ran through them was a remarkable feat.

Also even though it seemed lopsided in the end, those were all close games.  Game 1 was neck and neck through the 7th inning stretch.  Game 2 was a 2 run game.  The Indians led Game 3 for most of the game and it took a swinging bunt and Bauer's throwing error on a sure double play to open up the game.  The Astros of course won decisively, but the notion that it was a cake walk or the Indians to put up much of fight is ludicrous.

They led Game 2 until Marwin’s double off Miller in the 6th. We dominated them overall statistically, but our runs came late.

Agreed, Stros beat a damn good team ! Whats so fun for me is all the "little" things we seem to do better than most. We were pretty well evenly matched, but our defense is hard to beat (especially in OF) . And overall team speed and our base running are just about tops. This really hit home for me in game 2 with Melky boxing it around in the RF corner and Bregman cutting the bases perfectly and scoring by a hair.
Remember Jesus Alou being called out of the 1st base coaching box to pinch-hit a double vs. the Reds in '79 I think, to win a crucial game, and he patted Morgan on top of the head (ala Benny Hill w/the little bald guy) and Little Joe got pissed.....yeah,that was great.

Managers keep making that mistake against the Astros - Roberts did it all the time in the WS last year while Hinch just let the hot hand go if and until it cooled off.  It's the American League!  How hard can it be?

What does Marwin do against him the 3rd time?  At that point he was the only one who had good swings on CC.

At the time, bringing in Miller was the absolute right move. They turned Marwin around to his weaker side, and he had almo no previous success against Miller-6Ks in 8 ABs. Hindsight never loses.

This year's Miller was not nearly the force that the '16 and '17 Miller was. Although I don't think Francona was wrong to do what he did, I'll bet he was plenty nervous about it.

Absolutely. Tito is being criticized a little for that move, which I find unfair and disingenuous. Suppose that he hadn't turned Marwin around, and Marwin hit the ball out of the yard, the critics and monday morning quarterbacks would have jumped on him for that.

Francona on the Astros post-ALDS. "They won 101 games, we won 91. I think their division was better. So over the course of a long season, they were better than us," he said. "That doesn't mean you can't win a short series. Their two starting pitchers we faced the first two days were virtually unhittable. If you kind of simplify it, we got three hits off of their first two pitchers, and I actually thought we had a pretty good approach. We didn't chase much. If we'd have chased, we might not have gotten any hits. We were pretty disciplined in the zone.

"Their stuff was off-the-charts good. You can talk about intangibles, you can talk about analytics. Analytically, those first two guys are really good. That makes you look a lot smarter."
