Justin Verlander leads all AL pitchers in WHIP (0.91), WAR (6.4) and strikeouts (280), is tied for first in quality starts (25), second in innings (208) and third in ERA (2.60) and in opponent batting average (.201).

Brian McTaggart  @brianmctaggart 1h ago
Verlander will pitch a full game, probably not going past 100 pitches, though. He's in the Cy Young race and the Astros are going to give him a chance to pad his numbers.

After a couple of groundouts from Springer and Correa (now 1-8 with 4 whiffs since returning), Reddicks flares a single down the LF line. Marwin whiffs on a ball that would have taken a stepladder to reach to end the inning.

We're scoreless going into B1.

Correa hard-hit ball but it's caught for out #1.
White with a defensive swing on the hit and run but lines into DP.

JV had retired the first 11 Baltimore hitters before Adam Jones doubles with 2 out in B4. Moves to 3rd on what's scored a WP (but should have been corraled by Maldonado). JV then gets final out on a K. 8 whiffs and counting.

Scoreless it remains heading to T5.

Snell will make his last start for the year tonight, no doubt he will be looking for a big finish in a game that means nothing in the grand scheme.

Infield popout off the bat of Stewart for out #2.
Rickard also goes down for JV's 10th K and 290th of the year.

15 pitch AB finally ends with infield hit for Joseph to start the bottom of the 6th.
Cedric Mullins grounder to Correa and Joseph nailed for interference and the DP is called.
Arguing ensues but ruling stands.
JV currently at 89 pitches with 2 outs in the frame.

ETA:
Villar walks, JV now at 95 pitches.
Joe Smith warming in pen.
Adam Jones grounds out on JV's 99th pitch.

Astros 3-0 going to T7.

Smith will not be facing many/any LHB in the playoffs.  He's here to get big outs against RHB, and he does that very well.

Also I'm pretty sure the offense has screwed JV more often than the pen, but he should have won 20 this year easily.

I'm sure he heard us talking about him in the postseason roster thread. "Fuck those guys!"

I woke up to see ball 4 to Springer then holy shit, what a great at bat by Correa. THAT’S the Carlos Correa who can be a superstar.  He was not leaving that box without driving in that run.  Not sure where that guy has been, but it’s good to see him again.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Davis can't get the ball out of his glove.  Again.

JD Davis, master of the double (or triple) clutch.  Has he always been like this?
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.

His homer was arms extended to RF.

Great to see.

Man, Davis tried to get White killed.
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

Rondon tries for the save...

Falls behind 2-0 on Mancini who then lines a single to right.
Again falls behind 2-0 before allowing a base hit to Beckham.
Runners on 1st and 2nd with zero outs.
Gets the DP ball on Nunez, JD Davis stepping on 3rd before throwing to 1st.
Runner on 2nd with 2 outs.
1-2 count on DJ Stewart who then whiffs.

Astros win 4-3 for 102nd win!!!!!!!!!

He definitely had a shot at a 5-4 dp.

But we'll have to take it.

102.

Nice 9th inning win.

Verlander has pitched so many gems only to have the arson squad in our bullpen burn his wins to the ground. I'll say this: Joe Smith should have no playoff roster spot.

Arson squad? Best bullpen in MLB.

The roster will not be decided by one outing.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.
