Loved the Astros fans presence at Fenway last night.
« on: September 08, 2018, 09:20:16 am »
There may have been more at Fenway last night than at MMPUS during some of the lean year games.

Sawx fans reactions are great. “It’s like an invasion!”

The Texans playing there this weekend is the primary driver, but it's cool to see stuff like that.  I was in Seattle (Texans were playing the Seahawks) during last year's World Series and it was a sea of Astros fans everywhere you went.  Many locals asked just what the hell was going on with all the Astros/Texans fans.  I said we're all here for the football game on Sunday.  Surely you see visiting fans, right?  "Not like this" they all replied.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

This will be our little secret, okay?  The Sox fans are not really sure if all the Texans are baseball or football fans but they are duly impressed.  I was up at my Vermont place earlier this week and all anyone could talk about was the upcoming series with the Astros and they would grill me for Astros details if they heard I was a fan.  Not a peep about the Patriots.  I think New England is the inverse of Texas in that regard.  They love the Pats because they are winners but their first love is baseball whereas Texas loves football of every type but like/love the Astros because they are winning.

As an aside, slowly moving to Vermont is an interesting experience.  Being in a place where there is multi-generational allegiance to teams based on geography is just so different than the transient populations in and around DC.  Neither is right or wrong but my temperament is more inclined to the New England experience.

What part of Vermont?

NW corner of the state. 40 minutes from the Canadian border. Little town of Charlotte (pronounced Shalahtt) around 20mi south of Burlington. Still working in DC during the week though...

I was a resident of White River Junction, VT for about four years.  Did not spend much time on the western half of the state, but, man, it was simply a gorgeous place to wake up every day.  High on my list of "gotta get back there" places is Grand Isle County (North Hero, South Hero, Isle La Motte, etc).  Simply unheralded, incredibly beautiful places.  The Long Trail brewery in Bridgewater Corners is one of my happy places on this earth.

I'll vouch for this Das.  I do a lot of business on Boston.  Flip on sports talk there and they're talking baseball no matter what time of year it is.

I've loved every minute I've spent in NE. Been 3xs in summer or early fall.

Our rental car once broke down across from Dartmouth College.

There are worse fates. Hope you ate at Lou’s. You also could have continued your journey on foot via the Appalachian Trail.

We had reservations that night at an inn down the road. Some may recall a Budweiser commercial that used to air every holiday season with the Clydesdales and I'll Be Home For Christmas playing in the background? That spot was shot at this inn in the dead of summer. They blew in fake snow and everything to make it look like the holidays. We sat on the porch of the inn and had a hamburger that we all agreed was outstanding.

Norwich Inn? If so, they also have a fine brewery.

I had to look it up but it was the Kedron Valley Inn in Woodstock, VT.  Not far from the state line of N.H.

Woodstock is very pretty. Quintessential Vermont except there’s nothing else like it in Vermont. It’s a stylized Vermont town, built up and remodeled over the last 100 years to look like the finest version of Vermont, made from all the finest materials so that the elite from Manhattan and Boston can “run up to their place in Vermont” without having to actually experience Vermont people, world views or lifestyles. An exclusive, Disney-fied version of Vermont, if you will. But, very pretty with lots of fine food and plastic surgery.

We enjoyed Manchester, too.

Once I had two days two get to Montreal from NYC, it was late September and the leaves were starting to turn, so I drove through New Hampshire and Vermont, it was a beautiful drive, spent the night in Lebanon, ferried across Lake Champlain. One thing I surprisingly observed was that them yanks got a lot more emaciated meth/crack/opioid addicted hillbilly types wandering about rural New England than I expected.

Yes, before moving to New England I thought it was full of poets, college professors, old money folks, and a few hearty lumberjacks/maple syrup farmers.  Instead, lots of "Yankee rednecks" (which is a sad version of the real thing) and the some of the most dysfunctional rural poverty I had ever encountered.
