Keep the line moving, boys!
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

A foul tip is caught.  If the catcher doesn't catch it, it's not a foul tip.

Laureano...0-2...1-2...2-2...3-2...chops one off the plate up the 3B line...again...Bregman bare hands it, but can't get Laureano...he's now 2 for 2, with a total combined distance of about 70 feet.
Lucroy flies out F8
Laureano steals 2B...originally called out on a monumental throw by Maldonado, but Correa never tagged him... A's challenging and it's easily overturned
Martini lines out to 2B

I check out my MLB app and become elated to see that this game is the “game o’ the day” since I’m in Colorado and not in Houston, but, for some reason, the app says that I’m blacked out, wtf?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

When I was in Colorado this summer the ATT app wouldn't let me watch the Astros because I wasn't in the home broadcast region or something.

I would have thought the MLB game of the day would be immune to that though.

Davis...0-2...strikes out swinging

And that's all for Morton...Harris in

Olson...0-2...strikes out swinging

Stanton can turn a foul tip into an anatomy of the hand lesson, which is fine if you're in an anatomy class and not watching a ball game.

B5:

White singles to RCF...first reasonably struck ball of the night
Gurriel tries to bunt and whiffs...quickly 0-2...lines out to 3B...Chapman was playing back on the grass and caught it at the top of his leap
Reddick singles to LCF, White to 2B
Maldonado...takes three meatballs down the middle to strike out looking
Springer...full up...walks, White to 3B, Reddick to 2B
Bregman doubles to LF, White scores, Reddick scores, Springer to 3B

Jackson out, Kelly in

Altuve hacking at the first pitch in the dirt and grounds out 5-3

But new ballgame...3-3

That’s what Altuve would do. Bregman would use a leaf. He’s more selective.

Yeah, but do you have to shit outside?  You are WAY the fuck out there in WA...

Indoors now but I remember the outhouse well enough.  The outhouse actually makes a lot sense, but taking a dump where you eat and sleep is better apparently?

My grandfather used to talk about his mother wanting an indoor toilet.  His dad would say "you want to do WHAT in the house?...in the HOUSE?"

Rondon in...

Lowrie pops out F5
Davis...full count...strikes out swinging
Olson...3-0...four pitch walk
Piscotty...2-0...hits one in the rafters and it never comes down...Melvin out arguing it's a home run...going to review....just a strike...2-2...grounds out 5-3

Still 3-3

Not much comfort game to game. He wastes tremendous talent lots of times.

I see it like this... if Altuve has better plate discipline yeah maybe he hits .400. If Bregman has Altuve’s innate skills he hits .500.

Familia in for the A's...

Springer...full count...with a duck snort to RF
Bregman singles up the middle, Springer to 2B, tries for 3B and is easily thrown out 8-5...fuck George...Bregman to 2B though
Altuve...quickly 0-2...strikes out swinging at a pitch that almost hits his back ankle
Correa...3-1...takes a hanger right down the middle to fill the count...takes a fat pitch belt high right down the fucking middle of the plate.

3-3

Give away an out on the basepath
K on 3 pitches
Go 3-1 then look at 2 strikes,  the last of which was a meatball

Poor performance by 1, 3, and 4 spots.

Mrs banedoodle and I just checked in. She noted at once that “Martini, Laureano and Piscotty” was a distinctly noir outfield. She’s now fast asleep.

The Correa AB was heartbreaking.

WTF Correa?

He's acting like a guy who hasn't been able to swing a bat without pain most of the season.
At this point I don't know if it's lingering bad habits or he's still not all there physically...

A's with 11 baserunners...on five fucking hits...two of which never made it past the pitcher.

If he's not ready to hit in that situation, he shouldn't be on the fucking roster.  I mean it.

It seems kind of unfair to swing at pitches in the heart of the strike zone.
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

And if not for the walk, Altuve gets Lucroy's grounder and we're in the bottom of the 9th tied.

T9:

Osuna in

Semien...0-2...1-2...strikes out swinging
Laureano...3-0...walks
Lucroy grounds to 2B, Altuve playing towards 2B and it's a seeing eye single, Laureano to 2B
Martini with a shiftfuck rule book double to RCF on the first pitch, Laureano scores, Lucroy to 3B
Chapman...infield in...3-2...fouling off pitches...strikes out looking
Lowrie pops out F5 on the first pitch

Headed to the bottom of the 9th...Astros chasing a run

Walk, walks,  walks.

They were Morton's undoing,  and that one looks large now.

B9:

Treinen...best ERA in baseball... in for the A's

Marwin taps back to the mound
White...0-2...pops out F6 at the mound
Gurriel...quickly 0-2...1-2...strikes out swinging

Astros fuck themselves to a 4-3 loss.

Astros bullpen was fine.  Morton was Morton.  Unhittable at times, other times can't hit the side of a fucking barn.  Altuve was shit tonight.  Correa was shit.  Marwin was shit.  Gurriel was shit.  Maldonado was shit.

After the wars they went through last year, I though this team's mental toughness would never again be in doubt.
But this year they keep showing up and acting like, as my military/veteran friends would say, "total fucking boots."

Mental toughness is relative in this case, as you need to be tough to get to this level at all.
But they're just doing so many weird/erratic/nonsensical things this year. Maybe all the injuries have something to do with it, as trying to play through pain could cause hesitance, overthinking and bad technique/habits...

You realize this team is 30 games over 500 right? Tonight was a big game and a bad loss. Yesterday was a big game and a good win. The other team are professional baseball players too right?

Let's not pretend the A's are a bad team, they have been the best team in baseball for the last 2.5 months.

1.  No one is saying this Astros team isn't good.
2.  Record doesn't matter, position in the standings does.  I don't care if they win 120 games, if they don't make the postseason.  People need to get off this "last year they were..." kick.  What matters is this year and where they are relative to other teams.  Yes, the A's are legit, hence the consternation.

I agree 100% with doyce and with you. Today is important, but this one game will not decide the season. The As have a hard stretch of games. Last night was tough, and we blew a chance to take the lead twice with our best hitters up. We ran ourselves out of a great situation in the bottom of the 8th. Walk and shiftfuck in the 9th. These are two really good teams, and there are lots of games to go.

Doom and gloom folks have no place in a tight pennant race. They need a double digit lead.

The A's do have a tough stretch.  They've had a couple of starters pitching above their heads, and now have lost two in Manaea and Anderson.  But winning today would be huge.  Today's game is worth two games in the standings.

And they're in second place.

I did not bring up last year. Only this year. Yes the standings are what matter but standings have nothing to do with mental toughness. They have won and lost against a really good team, a team with no mental toughness loses both games.

I mean the "royal" you.  And you brought up their record.  I'm simply saying their record is only relative.  What matters is finishing ahead of the other teams, not necessarily some arbitrary number of wins or games above .500.  Right now the Astros are in a fight and every game matters.  This is August 29th, not May 5th.  There is not a "long season" left.  It's a sprint now.  Any stumble is magnified.
