A's @ Astros August 27, 2018
« on: August 27, 2018, 07:01:23 pm »
Most important series of the year so far.  This may be the season this week...

The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

No Blum?  They are getting as bad as the Astros lineup.

Well let’s say this: maybe and hopefully Geoff Blum is right and the A’s starting pitching can’t keep it up, but their fucking offense came to play.

He fouled off a lot of tough pitches and got maybe a call. It was a good AB.

The A's are legit.  There could be a team win 100 games this year and not make the postseason.

Someone else will have to do PBP for a while

Just tuned in w/ A's leading 4-0, will do temp PBP for a while.
Will need a few minutes to summarize Astros 3rd inning....  (nice challenge!)

Udder domination?

(Sorry.)

Whatever it is it pales (pails?) in comparison to *thumbs-up Houston*, which I am proud to say adorns the chest of one of my favorite shirts.

I heard it said once—can’t remember which august baseball personage said it, but it was someone eminently qualified—that Victor Martinez was the smartest hitter this guy’d ever seen, and that the thing with Victor was that he was a “guess hitter” who guessed right a lot. Correa has the look to me of someone who mostly guesses but whose batting IQ isn’t yet doing him many favors.

At bat stops fucking working when I try to do the in market streaming but every non in market game works fine.

Att keeps showing the double in the top of the 6th and then stops working.

White worked a walk there, but would have liked to have seen him swing the bat and try to drive a run in.

If you’d told me at the beginning of the season that I’d be looking forward to Tyler White at bats late in the season I would have thought you were nuts....

He took the 3-0 he should’ve swung at the first time, then took the one he DID swing at, then walked. I thought it was good, especially with Gattis on deck...

...who promptly rendered the whole thing moot.

He took two hittable pitches with two out and a RISP.  His job is to drive runs in.  Situational.  Hitting.

I’m saying he burned himself swinging 3-0 the first time at the pitch he took on 3-1 that time. I agree he could’ve abused the 3-0 pitch there but I don’t blame him for being shy after the earlier 3-0.

B8:

Trivino in for the A's...

Reddick lines to LF, Martini has it bounce off his glove, picks it up and throws it back in WAY over the cutoff man, and Reddick takes off for 2B...the throw bounces WAY over the first baseman's head...Reddick slides into 2B and gets up to dust himself off, realizes the ball is against the wall and moves to 3B on the single/2-base TE7
Maldonado...0-2...strikes out swinging
Springer...infield in...0-2 swinging at two sliders 9 feet off the plate, helmet flying off...finally lays off that pitch to make it 1-2...2-2...3-2...nothing close to the plate yet...walks
Bregman homers to RF on the first pitch...Reddick scores, Springer scores
Altuve walks

Trivino out, Pagan in

Correa...0-2...grounds into FC, Altuve out 5-4 at 2B
Marwin...3-0...walks, Correa to 2B
White...1-2...contact lens rolling around in his eye...ready now...homers to LF...Correa scores, Marwin scores
Gattis ...3-2...pops out F6

But the Astros hit the pay station six times...head to the 9th leading 11-4

T9:

Smith in to try to finish it off...

Davis 0-2...strikes out looking...BoMel bitching about strike three, even though it was two ball widths *inside* the zone
Olson  pops out F5
Piscotty singles to RCF
Semien...0-2 as PIscotty takes 2B uncontested...1-2...grounds out 6-3

And the Astros take the opener 11-4!!

Good thing I started drinking rum when I did.  They needed that win.
We need to set you up a gofundme for rum supply.

I just got you a fucking sweep in Anaheim, then came back to finish this one off.  Had to pay the bills in between.

The Reddick little league triple was agonizing to listen to,  but hilarious to see on video. Everybody in the stadium but him knew he should have been hightailing it to third.

And after all that he got to trot home.

Good times.

Four games worth.

More, the farm teams gave them away also.

I love watching Alex Bregman play baseball.

Tonight I had to enjoy listening to descriptions of him playing which also turned out to be enjoyable.

Bregman is the definition of a complete player.  A gold glove caliber defender and a guy whose swing and approach at the plate is a thing of beauty.  Others on the team, like Springer, could learn a lot from his approach at the plate.
Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted.

Agreed. Pressly's breaking pitches, in particular, are outstanding.
