Haniger leads off with a towering HR to LCF

Quickly 1-0 Ms.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Span follows with a triple on a ground ball to 1B... because Tyler White is glued to one spot.

That was a Keuchel in April-May start to the game.

I would not want to be near JV in the dugout right now.

The HR was one thing. But the triple and double should have been outs at this level. Frustrated I’m sure.

With the off day yesterday I wouldn’t think he would need a day off. Probably more to do with Paxton on the mound I’m guessing????

Apparently JV was ejected after the 2nd for arguing balls/ strikes.

He was likely coming out anyway and got his money's worth.

He was pretty streamed about the balk call, too, especially since they scored three runs after that.

But I think I've figured out the strategy. It's a rope-a-dope, and we're trying to get their batters so tired that they'll be worthless for the weekend.

A balk call when you think you’ve picked off the runner to end the inning, then allow 3 more runs on 2 more homers, I’m pretty sure he got his money’s worth before departing.  Umpires discretion and all, but did JV actually balk? I missed it.

Yes, he absolutely balked, clear as day. That’s no excuse for the runs that followed.

Lifted his leg, paused,  pivoted and threw to second.

I have no idea if it was a balk.

I'll look at it later but I just don't understand your description.

You have to step towards the base you’re throwing to and it has to be before you throw the ball. He didn’t step towards 2B, it was more a lift leg put it back down. More towards 3B as he threw back across his body.

Kemp gives this team some really solid ABs

Amen to that.

For all the disappointment that the mashers from Fresno have been, Kemp looks like a veteran in his role.

If you had told me this morning that we would score four runs off of Paxton with Verlander on the mound, I would have felt pretty good about our chances. Of course, then I would have remembered that it's a home game.

The Verlander ejection video is on At Bat.

Very underwhelming.

JV was in the dugout jawing. HPU was standing 10 feet up the 3B line and tossed him.

Just as well that it wasn't a big show.  Getting drilled then having it out with blue isn't a good look.

Yuli isn't making Yuli-type contact.

Yuli runs pretty hot and cold. He either squares everything up for a line drive or looks like an ordinary hitter. I bet he gets hot again here in a bit.

If we’re going to PH for JD to avoid him facing Vincent and to set up a lefty-lefty match-up, maybe it’s time to send him down.

Jake put his head down and was digging immediately.

When he hit it I thought it was slow enough that he might have a chance, and then I saw Gordon make a good move to the ball and I thought "damn, he won't make it", and then I saw Gordon flub the ball. That was a lot of up and down for four seconds of baseball.

Well, I never thought the lineup we trotted out there would have scored 6 runs with Paxton on the mound.

Damn shame Harris gave up those two runs or we would be tied right now. Then again, damn shame Verlander didn’t have it tonight. We needed to step on the throat of this team in this series.

Yeah, Bregman in particular had a rough night. He’s been carrying this team for a while though so not much you can say. Honestly, he was probably due to cool off a little. We need Yuli to step up and we especially need Correa to come back tomorrow night and play with his hair on fire.

I'll just settle for Correa coming back.

If he's healthy the production will follow.

And the other guys can slide a notch closer to their usual lineup spots/roles.
