Angels @ Astros, 4/24
« on: April 24, 2018, 07:39:21 pm »
The umpires have obviously bought completely into the Ohtani infallibility story.

Did sneak back into the country and not tell anybody? I don't know how else to explain the sudden suckiness.

Morton has given up two hits, both solo shots.

Astros pick up one in the 2nd on a Bregman double and a Marwin single.

2-1 Angels after 2
He breezed him, one more time!

Can someone please explain what the fuck happened on Marwin's at bat?  Gamecast shows "in play, run(s)", then moves to the top of the 3rd with the score still 2-0

Bregman on 2nd, McCann on 1st. Marwin singles on a ground ball to RF, throw goes toward the plate but is awful and gets cut. McCann had rounded 2nd far enough to convince Marwin that he was going to 3rd, but he stopped and went back to 2nd, leaving Marwin in no man's land between 1st and 2nd, where he eventually got tagged out.

The ball wasn't deep enough or slow enough for McCann to drag his ass to 3rd. Neither he nor Marwin should have ever been more than 10 ft off their bag. It was bad baserunning.

Marwin singles to right, throw home is off line toward third, catcher throws to first base to get Marwin.

Upon review, what Austro said. Astros dickstepping.

Marwin singled on a ground ball to right. The throw came home but was up the third base line and Bregman scored. The catcher then threw to second to catch McCann napping, but he got back in time. Marwin, however, was halfway to second and was tagged out.

Gameday has corrected the score.

I don't know if he's getting squeezed, but he's not getting any corners. Unlike Ohtani.

Swinging bunt eludes Bregman and scores a run. And here's everybody's favorite 50-year-old hitter. And he pops up to Yuli! There's a break.

until the next play.

not bregman's night either.  i get so used to him making spectacular plays i get upset when a hit eats him up.

Hard-hit ground ball down the third-base line that Bregman manages to knock down, but a run scores and there's still only one out and the bases are still loaded. And Morton is closing in on 55 pitches.

Correa makes a nice play to get a DP and get out of the inning. But I don't really have the feeling that the Astros are going to score the five runs necessary to pull this one out.

Two runs seems like a monumental obstacle...five runs like putting a man on mars.

Ohtani can't be getting too many calls...he's thrown 42 pitches, only 21 for strikes.  That's an awful ratio.

It’s gotta be hard to be an umpire right now. You suck at your job—you’re probably incapable of not sucking at it—and everyone sees it all the time, and the team your fuck-ups are helping now you’ll fuck over next time, so you’re really just isolated and helpless and unloved out there, and your bosses back in NY are constantly reversing you in front of God and everyone, and the vast majority of people who’re crazy about the sport you regulate are just holding on for the moment when your job is roboticized.

Great stuff.  Hasn't been consistent with his splitter, and the ump can't figure out if he wants to call the low strike or not.  Got away with a couple of hanging sliders(?) that didn't get swung at.
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

You have to hit the ball before you can hit a homer. And he's looked positively Biggio-esque on sliders this year.

They have been a strike out factory.

The other half of the graphic was that they struck 1,071 times last year. For the entire season. They're almost a quarter of the way there after 24 games. That's ridiculous.

ETA: That's on pace for 1465 strikeouts in 162 games. Which is 394 fewer balls in play, and 394 fewer chances for the defense to screw up.

Fisher with a bunt single and the next guy comes in to pitch. Why take Ohtani out in the first place with 2 out?

Ohtani came out with one out, and they brought in a lefty to face McCann, turn Marwin around, and then Fisher.  Didn't work out so well.

He hasn't pitched in 5 days.  I really dislike the way this roster is constructed.

Roster.  There simply isn't enough work on this team for 13 pitchers.

Got it - “roster” gave me the perception that it was a broader disagreement, although you’re certainly accurate to describe it that way. Also, I can remember a few occasions already this season when an extra pinch hitter would have been nice to have, last night being one of them.

I don't mean the specific players, I mean the construction in terms of which *types* of players.  You have a terrific starting staff, who routinely go deep into games.  You're in the AL.  You shouldn't need that many pitchers, especially when you're already carrying essentially three catchers and two "5th outfielders".

It's gotten you 15-8 so far.  That's on pace for 106 wins.

Excuse me...16-8, on pace for 108 wins.

True. It is one hell of a starting rotation. But they're going to be very vulnerable in the postseason if nothing changes.

That was pretty low. Looked like a ball. Fisher needs to go down and find his stroke. I'm ready for Tucker.

Gameday had it thigh high.  But he has a really bad habit of taking hittable pitches and not protecting.  He has gotten continually worse every day he's been in the league over two seasons.  I cannot understand what anyone sees in him, or why he's still got a job.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Too close to take.

And gameday showed it in the zone.

He missed his chance when 1) he didn't swing at a FB and 2) he was just late on the next one.

Doubt he was gonna see another FB the rest of the AB.
