Yuli?
« on: April 04, 2018, 09:15:44 pm »
Anybody hear anything in when Yuli is expected to rejoin the team?  I like Davis, but I think he needs more time at AAA.

ETA - Answered my own question.  10 day DL for hand surgery effective April 3.

Suspension has been served.  Now the DL stint begins.  They are consecutive not concurrent.

Per Kaplan at The Athletic, MLB/Manfred are fine with how things have played out.

This whole thing was a scam.  There was no way that Yuli was going to start the season with the team and the public statements that Yuli was ready were simply so that Yuli wouldn't have to serve any suspension when he came off the DL.  I have no problem with this.  Teams manipulate the DL all of the time.  But let's not kid ourselves as to what happened here.

It's too bad that Davis hasn't hit better.  His defense at first has been pretty great and he is a versatile player on the field.  But there is no room for him when Yuli comes back.  And while Fisher hasn't been lighting it up either, Fisher is at least a good pinch runner.

Fisher’s on pace for 54 triples, what more do you want from a #9 hitter?

Does he get docked pay for the suspended days?

Has he even gotten his ring yet?  I'd say missing out on the home opener celebration with his teammates is a meaningful consequence.

Yep.

But he's not actually missing any games because of the suspension.  And that is the point I am trying to make.  Personally, I'm happy about this because its good for the Astros.  But it's still a scam.

He missed the first 5 games of the season because of the suspension.  He will miss at least the following 10 days due to the DL stint.

Puh-lease.  He didn't miss the games because of the suspension.  He missed the games because he was still injured.  The Astros simply announced that he was ready to play.  And mysteriously, as soon as those five games ended, he was no longer ready to play and went on the DL.

The difference theoretically is that he isn't missing any games in which is physically able to play, and thus he and the Astros aren't actually being "penalized" (aside from the obvious monetary penalty to Yuli). Also, if he took his suspension after his DL stint ended he would not be able to play in minor league rehab games while he was on the disqualified list.

Of course Manfred and the league office have no problem at all with how the Astros handled the suspension.

I'm still not getting the problem here.  What it sounded like Todd suggested originally was that Yuli should take his suspension concurrent with his stint on the DL. He didn't do that.  He took his suspension, then went on the DL.  He could have done it the other way, or he could have taken his suspension in July I suppose. In any case they don't appear to me to overlap. But if Todd needs a victory dance I'll sit back and watch the shimmy.

And he loses 5 days of pay.  MLB is fine with it according to this quote from Manfred in the Athletic:

Quote
He served his five-game suspension. He lost his five days of pay. He's now on a 15-day disabled list stint. I think what they did was completely consistent not only with the rules but with the intent of the rules,” said Manfred, who was at Minute Maid Park for the Astros'...

And the article goes on to point out:

Quote
It would have actually saved them a game if they had placed Gurriel on the DL first. Season-opening DL stints were retroactive to March 26, meaning Gurriel would have been eligible to begin his five-game ban Thursday and return April 11 at Minnesota. By putting him on the DL Tuesday, the Astros will be without Gurriel until April 13 against Texas. (They are off April 12.)
Always ready to go to a game.

Todd initially said:

Why can't they just put him on the DL after the five games are over?

To which Jim responded:

Dishonest. He must serve the suspension when he is able to play.

That's pretty much the "controversy" to the extent there is one.  Some people think that serving a suspension when you're unable to play anyway violates the spirit of the suspension (which compounds existing complaints that the suspension should have occurred during the World Series anyway).  Manfred, clearly, doesn't agree with those complaints.

Jake Kaplan in the Athletic noted that by having Gurriel go on the DL after the suspension actually costs the Astros an extra game of Yuli's services.  I haven't read the article so I'm not sure if that's because how the schedule lines up or if it takes into account the added benefit of being able to play in rehab games.

Maybe Jim read it like I did, that Todd was asking why they couldn't overlap.  I guess theoretically Yuli might spend more time on the DL than he would otherwise have to if the DL had to come first, but I'm not at all troubled by what happened.
