Considering how injury prone both McCullers and Morton are, I’m not convinced they are going to deal McHugh.

I think they will if Luhnow can get what he wants for him. Martes should some time soon have his chance to be what they hope he will be or else he should be traded. McHugh is nice Insurance, but I cannot imagine he is happy about being the 6th starter insurance policy.

ETA: which team has a LH hitting OF we would like to have?

The Phillies are looking for a starter as are the Brewers.

Both teams have decent prospects if the Astros want to trade McHugh.

I don’t think that any team looking for a pitcher like McHugh is going to be trading a player off of the ML roster.

True, but I worry about Peacock and Morton. It has been a while since either of them have pitched as deep into the calendar as they did last year. At least with Keuchel, LMJ and McHugh they spent large portions of last season on the DL. They should be fresh in spring training. I think Peacock and Morton will be watched like a hawk.

I’m torn over the idea of moving McHugh. I love what he’s done as a member of this team. Look at his record as Astros pitcher. You can probably count on two hands the number of pitchers with records that good over the same span. I keep reading that the brass fully expects Whitley in the show this year. It is going to be awful crowded if that is the case. He may have to be moved eventually to make room. It may be possible to get more for him later in the year.

Happy about the Cashner signing.  The Yankmees and Red Sox play the Orioles 19 times.  And it would suck if they just rolled all over the Orioles.

McHugh won his arbitration hearing.  I liked this comment:  "It's not always a comfortable process," McHugh said Thursday prior to finding out the results of his hearing. "That's kind of built into the idea of it, but it's an important privilege that players have negotiated, and I feel honored to be able to go through it as a second-year [arbitration] player."

I saw that and thought McHugh's comments were an interesting contrast.  Especially given that McHugh's comments came before he found out the result.

He seems to be a very thoughtful, classy guy.

He does strike me as a very thoughtful guy. He almost immediately became one of my favorite players on the team for any number of reasons and I am hoping that he sticks around this year.

This is where I am also. I, as does chuck, like him a lot, and he is great to have around in case one of the starters goes down. He was a #2 starter on a playoff team not too long ago. My guess is, however, he is/will be frustrated by a role of middle relief/starter-in-waiting, and although he likely does not want to leave the Astros, he also likely would welcome being an important part of another team’s rotation. This will be interesting to watch how it plays out.

He hasn't posted on it in a while, but he does have a blog that has some pretty thoughtful stuff on it.  In particular, he talks about dealing with his sense of failure after being traded or cut in the past.

I felt a little bad for Collin last year sitting and watching from the dugout as the team he joined when they were at their absolute low-point were doing so well and having so much success. At least publicly, he never expressed any bitterness or challenges to management. He's always been a classy guy.

During and after Harvey McHugh basically took on the role of team spokesperson.  His comments about the team's connection with the community, how the team can help, and how the team was being affected were all really insightful and heart warming. 

I echo everyone else's sentiment.  He's a great guy, and a great asset for the Astros.  But his current role might not be his highest and best use for him personally, especially given the fleeting nature of a professional athlete's career.

Maybe not the best place to put this post but Gerrit Cole (well, he's one reason McHugh isn't in the rotation) says this about his brief time in Houston: It's a special vibe here. The hellos are genuine. The hugs are genuine. It's not like you can't get that on other clubs, but you can just see it and feel it here. When we get in the room and have a meeting, the manager is not walking around the room preaching to everybody. Everybody is kind of sitting down, the same level. There's an atmosphere that just fosters that unselfishness, which ultimately is what separates you in meaningful games.

Corey Dickerson just got DFA'd by the Rays.

All-Star last season with 27 HRs last season, a decent batting average, and relatively cheap.  On the other hand, his second half numbers were truly awful .241/.282/.408 and he strikes out a ton.  Still hard to believe that the Rays are simply letting him go.

DFA could be a prelude to a trade. Rays got active in a hurry.
