Musk’s BFR
« on: February 06, 2018, 04:06:19 pm »
That launch was fucking awesome.  It’s amazing what SpaceX has achieved.  Send Musk’s Roadster to Mars may be a little egotistical but, really, who can blame him?

I had a Volvo once I would have gladly sent to Mars.

Seriously, fuck Volvo.

If a redneck billionaire ever started a space exploration company it would be kind of funny if he launched a Saturn. He could fill the passenger seat with Moon Pies.

For the record, Elon Musk is an immigrant from a shithole country.

Right.  He put us over the top.  We have enough now.  We don't need any more.

In addition to losing the centre booster, it now appears that Musk's Tesla is off to join the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, having overshot its exit burn a tad.  Unless the Starman on board is Tom Hanks, it's basically gone.

Still, it was a pretty impressive first showing.

Mazda used to be shitty but they make some pretty damn good cars now.

I want to see the look on the Starman's face when he is hit by an asteroid.

Watching those boosters land was so cool.

There's something about their designs that I just find appealing.

I just realized that I conflated the Falcon Heavy with the BFR; they're not actually the same thing.  There's some great stuff in this article - including the very obvious fact that we should bin NASA's SLS - but also that the BFR is yet to come.  It's going to be human-rated and is designed to head out of Earth orbit.

Mars here we come!

I've owned 2 Mazda autos but that was in the 70s, swore I'd never buy another. I've owned 4 Ford vehicles (2 Pintos, a Tempo, and a F150) the last of which was purchased in 88. So my review isn't very fresh. I've had good luck with Honda and Toyota.

I had two different Mazda 626's, both of which were very dependable vehicles that I enjoyed. Our family has also had a variety of Honda''s, Nissan's, Toyota's, and Acura's. The two worst vehicles I've had -- by far -- were a Ford Pinto wagon (in college) and a Dodge Caravan.

Our mid-70s Mazda Mizer with no A/C was the family punchline when I was growing up.  That car lasted well into the 90s though.

We have an '08 Mazda3 and a '14 CX-9.  They're both comfortable, reliable cars with character and they're fun to drive.

I've had a Ford Ranger and a Focus, and enjoyed driving a Fiesta in Ireland (well, enjoyed isn't really the word, being on the wrong side of everything). But I liked all those cars, and was sad to see the Ranger mothballed. Truck size inflation over the years has been ludicrous.

The Ranger is back in 2019.  Apparently the Tacoma's incredible popularity is bringing it back.

I believe the Tacoma is sold in the rest of the world as the “Hi-Lux”.  The idiots on Top Gear, over the years, did all sorts of idiotic things to Hi-Luxes, and found it to be nigh-on indestructible.  To prove their thesis, the put in on top of a tower block that was rigged for demolition.  After the dust cleared from the implosion (and after some TV magic, I’m sure) they got it running.

On the flip side, the Hi-Lux is also the preferred platform for various terrorist groups from Syria to Somalia on which to mount a machine gun.  ISIS moves by Hi-Lux.

I believe so.  They also drove one up an active volcano and Clarkson once mounted a 500HP outboard to one and crossed the English channel (his second effort at making an amphibious Hi-Lux).

According to Wikipedia, some other group drove some modified ones to the geographic South Pole.
