I don't think I've seen McCattis together at the bottom of the order before.

I thought the same thing.  Maybe it'll confuse Porcello.

I guess it's in part because Marwin's climbed the ladder.

And rattling Porcello because he clearly remembers just pitching to that guy is a brilliant strategy.

Fox dipshits talking about the Yankees, of course, even though they don’t play for about 5 hours.  In prime time, natch.

Can’t say I’m too bothered that the last game in Boston is tough for them to attend / be drunk for.  Hope we can keep them quiet and subdued today.

Looks like there's a good chance we get a rain delay...which team does that favor?  Our logical long man to throw out there after a rain delay would be who?  Martes/Fiers?

I really hope Price isn’t available today.  Also, I thought they might start Sale, given this being a must-win for them.  I’m sure Porcello is on a short leash.

I would hope the Astros, as Price has pitched a couple of long relief stints in the last two games.  They may throw him again, but I’d like to think the Astros would get him this time - he walked a few tightropes yesterday.

Game 5 is must win for them too, so don't know that it makes sense to start Sale on short rest.

Neither Martes nor Fiers are on the roster. There is no logical long man for the Astros today. McHugh isn’t on the roster either, I’m sure McCullers isn’t available... probably just piece it together with Musgrove, Harris etc. Maybe Verlander, depending.

Thanks for all the feedback.  Damn the rain.  I'd rather just see a straight forward 9 inning game.  Something about off and on play that worries the shit out of me.  Then again, I'm strong as an oak against pressure in every area of my life save the Astros.  When times get dicey with the Stros, I fold like a cheap lawn chair.

I know it shouldn’t bother me, because it’s been going on forever, but it’s wholly pissing me off that the pregame show is all about rooting for the Red Sox.

Especially after the nose in assholes act the broadcast crew pulled yesterday.

Regardless of what happens in this series, the media schlong-gorvelling will be intolerable if the Yankees advance to the ALCS.

Astros at the corners..no one out...

T1:

Springer doubles to LCF
Reddick...tries a really awkward bunt, fouls it off...wild pitch, to 3B goes Springer...works the count full...walks
Altuve...2-0...grounds into1-4-6-3 double play, Springer scores...ball smoked up the middle, but Porcello got a glove on it to slow it down
Correa walks
Marwin hit by pitch, Correa to 2B
Bregman strikes out swinging

That's disappointing...two walks, HBP, double, wild pitch...one run

1-0 Astros

MLB.TV doesn't offer the Astros radio feed today so we've got the choice between blatant Red Sox homers and thinly veiled Red Sox homers.

B1:

Pedroia grounds out 3U
Bogaerts...3-0...3-1...homers to RCF
Benintindi grounds out 4-3
Betts singles with a screaming line drive of the LF wall
Betts steals 2B
Moreland strikes out swinging on a check swing

1-1

failing to score a run after a lead off triple would not be ideal, yet here we are with two outs and the runner still on third.

Not sure what Springers problem is.  Should have had a double, then should have moved to 3B on the wild overthrow that rattled around.  Content to stand there and watch the game.

My only guess is he didn't think it would be so crazy of a throw.  But I had expected him to be on third.

Do people keep accusing the Astros of stealing signs because they can hit the ball?  Because if they are able to steal signs, then maybe that team needs better signs.

T2:

Gurriel...0-2...triples to RF...Betts was way over in the RCF gap, and slid to try to stop the ball, but it got past him
Gattis...0-2...strikes out swinging at a pitch over his head
McCann...0-2...infield back...1-2...2-2...3-2...strikes out swinging a slider in off the plate
Springer singles to LF, Gurriel scores...not sure why Springer isn't on 2B
Reddick bloops a single to LF...throw goes to 3B is way wild and bounces around near the 3B dugout and nobody covering 3B.  Springer stands at 2B and watches.
Altuve...full up...walks, Springer to 3B, Reddick to 2B
Correa...quickly down 0-2...strikes out swinging

Astros send seven to the plate, but can only muster another single run

2-1 Astros

Do people keep accusing the Astros of stealing signs because they can hit the ball?  Because if they are able to steal signs, then maybe that team needs better signs.

They accuse the Astros of it because everybody does it.

It's like accusing your neighbor of farting.

Pretty sure the Red Sox are the iwatch-enabled sign stealers and any announcer who insinuates the Astros are sign stealers while omitting that info should eat a dick.

B2:

Ramirez...0-2...1-2...singles to LF
Devers shiftfuck single to 2B on a shoulda been double play ball, Ramirez to 2B
Vazquez...3-0...walks, Ramirez to 3B, Devers to 2B
Bradley strikes out looking
Pedroia...battling...strikes out looking...Pedroia bitching and moaning...Farrell out to argue, gets tossed
Bogaerts flies out F9

Morton works some magic.

I believe it was Pedroia's words that got farewell run.  Ump clearly did not want to toss the player.

Nice work by Morton on the corners and taking what the umpire was giving. Man, his ball moves a lot.

What an idiot. Ferrell getting home myself right n in the 2nd inning of an elimination game.

You know, Bregman might want to get a hit so Yuli can have someone on base when he comes up.

He was searching for the first three hitters and then made some great pitches against the last three.  Credit where it's due.  Got some favorable calls, but put them in a spot to get the calls.

The point is that you're tempting the BBGs.

did anyone see that pitch as anything but a strike?  The Pedroia pitch?  Looked good to me.
Trouble is those fuckers think every 50 -50 call should go their way.

B3:

Benintendi singles on another seeing eye ground ball to 2B
Betts lines into F5-3 double play!...A rocket right at Bregman, but Benintendi caught off of 1B
Moreland doubles down the RF line on the first pitch
Ramirez...1-2...taking his sweetass time to get in the box...now steps out again...it's all about him...2-2...hammers a hanging curve that misses a home run by a few feet...takes strike three for ball three to fill the count...singles to LF, Marwin fields it cuts down Moreland at the plate by 20 feet

2-1 Astros

I'm at a sports bar in Denver, no sound for the game. If it didn't say FS1 at the top, there would be no doubt this was a NESN broadcast. I've seen more shots of the Sox bench coach than Astros in the field.

Or the national syndicate should, you know, want to appeal to all audiences.

This is the byproduct of years of ESPN knob schlobbing.

Tunity app should give you access to the sound, but that may not be a good thing.

So if the rain comes in the 5th or 6th, what do they do?  Bring out the tarp and finish the game tonight after the rain passes?

Yep.  Even if that's tomorrow.

Morton gets a swinging K. Immediate cut to Red Sox fans for 20 seconds then next batter.

Looked about the same as the Pedroia pitch he threw a shit fit over. Not the same spot, but the same general strike-ness.

Ended close enough you'd like him to fend it off,  but it started way off.

At least he didn't throw a hissy fit.

It was his weird, nearly side armed slider that starts far off the plate and then floats in over the corner. I didn't see any reason not to call it a strike. Carlos spat on a better pitch earlier in the at bat.

So much for that brilliance.

I thought never bringing in a starting pitcher in the middle of an inning was part of the managing rule book.  Doubly so here when you're not in an elimination game.

There is NO reason to go to Verlander there. Absolutely zero. Putting the team in a position to lose due to idiotic overmanaging.

B5:

Pedroia grounds out 5-3
Bogaerts...3-1...3-2...walks

And that's all for Morton, Verlander in for his first career relief appearance

Benintendi homers to RF on a hanging slider, Bogaerts scores
Betts grounds out 6-3...woulda been inning ending double play
Moreland...3-2...walks
Ramirez flies out F9

3-2 Sox

The stage does seem a bit too big for Hinch but this would all be a non-issue if someone would drive in a run every dozen innings or so.

Bregman flies out F8 on the first pitch...announcers splooge all over themselves
Gurriel reaches on a 2-base E5
Gattis...0-2...strikes out looking
McCann...0-2..strikes out swinging at a slider that bounces in the other batter's box

Fuck.  More LOBsters.

Wow. Sparks admits he was off on that call. They mention Keuchel available on normal rest G5, if necessary.

And Verlander could still go in Game #1 of the ALCS.  If we get there...

T7:

Springer singles to LF
Reddick...takes a first pitch meatball...makes a feeble attempt at a bunt and fouls it off...0-2...1-2...2-2...pops out to shallow LF
Altuve...down 1-2...strikes out looking
Correa singles to LF, Springe to 2B
Marwin strikes out swinging on a pitch that bounces

two more LOBsters

3-2 Sox

Also, the ALDS has been the poster series for electronic strike zones. The inconsistency has been incredibly bad.

And I don’t think a reliever has stranded a base runner in Boston.

As long as we keep it a one run game, anything can happen.

I'm waiting for one of those pop-fly 300-foot home runs to go our way for a change.
