Can't be true.  Crane is a money grubbing S.O.B.

Already one of the best owners in Houston history despite what talk radio and the media says.

Les Alexander is an easy #1, but yes, very slim pickings after that.

Drayton did some good things. Running The Hun off negated a bunch of them though. The NJ guy (McMullan ?) had the respect of Bagwell and some others. Don't think Ryan was too fond of him.

Crane is only the second owner I've known. He is easily better than Uncle Drayton.

Drayton grabbed the wheel a lot while Hunsicker was in the driver's seat.  Crane seems to give Luhnow the space he needs to be amazing. Hope that one of the many other teams that needs to rebuild doesn't steal Luhnow away. I want him to have a long and satisfying career in Houston.

Hunsicker did a pretty great job of keeping Drayton from meddling in the day-to-day (McLane didn't and still probably doesn't understand baseball, and all of the complexity of a 30-ish game spring schedule, 162 game regular season, and then playoffs.)  Their relationship seemed to be fine as long as Hunsicker operated within the artificial budget that McLane set, and allowed for a couple of big splash trades (Randy Johnson being the biggest) along the way.

When Hunsicker left after the 2004 season, McLane (who still...not understanding the baseball) allowed his farm system (and eventually his major league club) to go to absolute shit under Purpura and Wade.  He traded away young talent for aging stars (Miguel Tejada), held a hard line on draft signings ("Why would I give all this money to players that won't be here for 5 years?") and fancied himself a wheeler-dealer with overpriced, ageing Free Agents (see Kaz Matsui, Carlos Lee and his ranch).

While I agree that McLane had his hands in too much, Hunsicker managed that relationship very successfully until he got fed up and left.  McLane didn't get the chance to really screw up this franchise until Hunsicker left.

no aspersions directed toward Hun. Thanks for the clear analysis which matches my memory of the events too. Until Hunsicker left I didn't appreciate the role a GM plays on a baseball team. "Moneyball" and the contrast in the team's fortunes between Hunsiker and Purpurra provided a little education.

Someone in the clubhouse once told me that Hunsicker was the laziest person they'd ever known, and that he never put together anything but took the credit for everything.  I was astonished, given his reputation.  Probably not true, but I've always wondered why he never took another managing job.  Is he still with Tampa?  He didn't go to LA, did he?

It seems everywhere Hunsicker goes, he improves things.

Right.  He led some incredible years in Houston then he had a hand in Tampa Bay's best years, and now the Dodgers.

No, but pretty close.  It's a dead horse that doesn't need to be beat now (or served at taco bell), but that must have been a more difficult organization than I would have guessed.  It's nice to see management and ownership on the same page.

Drayton would not let Hun go pick up a couple mid priced relievers before the 2004 season.  It really hurt us in the playoffs.  I think that was the final straw.

I think Crane deserves the credit for that.

He's certainly the guy who could screw it up the easiest.
