This weekend
« on: September 15, 2017, 08:28:39 am »
I have been in California all week visiting a cousin and will hook up with Gordon Lakey later today. I will do with him to see the angels and Rangers Friday and Sunday, and we'll go to UT/USC Sat night.

I assume I am to root for the Rangers in this series?

My motto is never fucking root for the Rangers.  Enjoy the UT game, should be fun.

Astros could possibly clinch Sunday with no help.

Astros could possibly clinch Saturday with a little help.

Astros could lose their remaining 16 games and miss the playoffs.

Do what feels best to you.

Speaking of traveling...I'm leaving the country at midnight tonight.  So things look pretty darn good.

Trust your feelings.

Either way,  one of those teams loses.

Enjoy the weekend.

Look for the Rangers to play their best game of the year on Saturday night if the Magic Number drops to 1 on Saturday afternoon.

If the Rangers lose on Saturday night in such a game, then Sunday in Houston will be an incredible atmosphere.

I tend to agree with your scout friend. But neither of us has a crystal ball. I hope the Astros say "fuck that shit" and give 'em hell.

Me, I'm for wasting sports writers' time, so I'd like to hang around and give me a big old shitburger to munch on.

Everyone seems to ignore how this team was decimated by injuries. The postseason is all about which team is hot, not which team is better.

That and some good luck.

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

As evidenced by the two most successful postseason Astros teams being wildcard winners,  not division champs.

And also as evidenced by 100+ years of baseball.

Enjoy the game tonight Jim. Football in the Rose Bowl is on my bucket list.

Getting your brains beat out is probably better than losing on a 65-yard pass play on the last play of the game.

I'm not sure where people get this idea that the Texans have been bottom of the barrel garbage in recent years, but they really ought to try paying attention to some football.

They are easily in the top half of the garbage can.

They're also the two time defending division champs, winning four of the last six titles. They're not world beaters, sure, but to compare their performance to a snuff film is just willful ignorance.

Still livid this morning about the coaching decision which wasted a heroic performance by the players. I rarely blame coaches for obvious reasons, but coaching lost that game.

Which decision(s), specifically? I thought sending Ehlinger into the middle of the line a second straight time was especially foolhardy. All I could think of was the boneheaded decision to run McCoy on an option against Alabama, knocking him out of the game and completely changing a game where they were shredding the Alabama defense.

That play.
The insane defensive alignment on the last play of the first half.
Not running Warren.

We were within a hair of a game-ending sack three times on the FG drive in regulation.

Ugh.

ETA: McCoy ran the option timidly. No way the backside LB should have been able to hit him if he wan it correctly.

Can't figure why Warren III isn't getting the ball more. He's a stud.
Remember Jesus Alou being called out of the 1st base coaching box to pinch-hit a double vs. the Reds in '79 I think, to win a crucial game, and he patted Morgan on top of the head (ala Benny Hill w/the little bald guy) and Little Joe got pissed.....yeah,that was great.

I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

I read that he suffered a scratched retina in the first quarter.

Total bs excuse. He caught a pass for a crucial first down on our final drive in OT.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

He seems kind of like the Lance McCullers of the Horns.

A scratched retina would require a penetrating injury to the eye.

Retinal tears can happen without penetrating trauma.

Either would represent an ocular emergency.

Corneal abrasion would be more likely and though uncomfortable would not carry the risk of permanent vision loss.  They can make it damn difficult to see short term however because of discomfort as the lid slides over the irritation.

Can't figure why Warren III isn't getting the ball more. He's a stud.

He should get it more, but calling him a stud seems badly misplaced.  Give him some momentum and Tech defenders, he's gold.  Give him a line of scrimmage crowded with big boys, he's bronze at best.

I disagree. A 5 yards a carry guy will move the chains, but Herman thinks that is not enough. Forget everything else: Double OT, ball on the 2-3 yard line, a golden opportunity to put SC in a 7 point hole, the OC calls a power play off tackle...and runs the freshman QB, not the 250 lb power running back. Malpractice.

I tend to agree, but that had been their MO throughout the game: use Ehlinger on short yardage.

I'm not defending Beck, just pointing out that Warren isn't a stud RB who gains yards against all defenses.

And I disagree with that assessment. He gains yards--maybe not 300--against everyone even with the weak OL UT has had during his time here. There is no excuse for only 4 carries against SC or for playing Porter in short yardage situations. Porter averaged 1.8 ypc on 7 carries Sat, and Warren had 4 ypc. His ONE carry after halftime was 5 yards.

As a Red Raider, that stung a little.

Yea, but you know what he meant, right?

Believe me, all Raider fans know. We are hoping for a Top 100 defense this year for the first time in many years. A Top 100.

But this is what you get ... trying to "out-surprise" everybody instead of just playing the game and making sure about fundamentals.  Gambling defense only got burned badly once, or this would not have been close.  And the gambling offense got really lucky a few times, or again ... not close.

He was also in there to pass block.
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"
