Oh good! Tony Kemp is starting!

Altuve riding pine.

McCullers is back to his old, effective self. *

*hopefully
He breezed him, one more time!

Altuve with a routine day off.
Bregman hit a first inning double.
McCullers' stuff looked good in the first.

Lance still looking good in the second.  An out, a F8, and a soft 6-3.

Through 2, no score.

Kinda surprising altuve isn't playing today. They often make note of the fact that jose doesn't like doing the day off before the day off.

Announcers mentioned his 0-12 streak and the chance to double up the rest.

Kemp grounds out.
Springer belts one to center that is nicely tracked down by Heredia
Bergman promptly flies out to right.

6 pitch inning.  Still no score.

McCullers falls to 3-0 against Gamel, after two strikes Reddick makes a phenomenal inward diving somersaulting catch on a sinking liner.  Great play; Lance tips his cap.

Zunino gets in a quick 0-2 hole. Polished off frozen on an outside fastball that paints the corner.

First pitch to Heredia low, then fouls off a pitch. Stassi comes out to talk to Lance.  Heredia rolls over a curveball foul.  He takes a curveball low and away, fouls off an inside breaking pitch.  Pops up the fastball on his hands to Bregman.

McCullers very impressive the first time through the order.

No score, headed to the fourth.

Correa takes a fastball low and away.  Fouls off a diving heater.  Pops the next pitch foul which is easily caught by Alonso.  One away.

Reddick takes a ball and then a high strike.  Ropes a fastball to RCF for a base hit.  Reddick on first with the Astros' second hit of the game.

La Pina swings wildly at a high and away fastball.  Takes an even higher one.  Takes one that bounces half a foot outside.  Takes another one over his head.  3-1, not a pitch close to the plate in this at bat so far.  Takes the base after another upstairs fastball.

Runners on first and second.  One out.  Marwin up.

Marwin takes an inside low curve and then a changeup on the outside corner.  1-1.  Drives a hanger deep to RCF.  Off the wall, both runners score on the double.  Marwin's 26th double ties a career high and he has a team leading 78 RBI.

2-0 ASTROS!

Beltran pops up the first pitch.  Maddening after the wildness Moore has displayed this inning.

Stassi takes a breaking ball low and then fouls back a meatball.  But Marwin gets caught sleeping at second on the pick off.  WTF.

Bottom of the fourth, top of the lineup.

Segura takes a curveball high and inside and then a fastball on the low outside corner.  Then sends a hanger deep to CF that Springer hauls in on the warning track.

Stassi comes out for a quick chat.

Alonso grounds out 4-3 on a changeup and McCullers openly compliments Stassi on the pitch call.

Keuchel and Verlander hunched over together watching from the dugout.

Cano works a 3-1 count and then takes a walk on an outside fastball.  Runner on first, two outs.

Nelson Cruz fouls a low fastball off the plate and then pops an outside fastball deep down the RF line that Reddick catches up against the stands in foul territory.

2-0 Astros after four.

Top five, Stassi, Kemp, Springer.

Stassi takes a breaking ball over the plate for a strike and then a high and inside fastball for a ball.  Watches a breaking ball bounce outside and then a fastball on the inside corner.  2-2.  Strikes out hard on a changeup/motionless slider over the outer half of the plate.

Kemp takes a fastball away and swings through one on the inside corner.  Fouls off a fastball on the outside corner.  Fouls off one of the better sliders Moore has thrown tonight.  And then pops up to left field.  Two away.

Springer takes an inside fastball and swings through a high heater (91 MPH).  The skies a pop 60 feet down the first base line.

Headed to the bottom of the fifth. Another quick inning for the lackluster but effective Moore.  2-0 good guys.

Seager with another fucking homerun.  This fucking guy.  That was a hanging curveball right over the middle.  Seager has driven in every Mariner run this series so far.

Haniger takes two breaking balls for strikes, another for a ball, and then fouls away a fastball.  Grounds out sharply to Bregman who backhands the shorthop deep in the corner, makes a strong throw to nip Haniger by a couple steps.  Another great play by Bregman and terrific pick by Yuli.

Gamel chops it to first for the U3.  Two away.

First pitch to Zunino is right at his face.  Zunino bails out but the ball catches the brim of his helmet.  I would have shit myself.  Lance tries to apologize.

Heredia grounds the first ball to short, Correa flips to second for the easy out.

2-1 good guys through five.  Lance looking good.  Attacking the strikezone and has made only two mistake pitches.  He got away with one but Seager takes no fucking prisoners against us.

Bregman first pitch swinging skies it to deep right.  Haniger hauls it in a few feet in front of the track.

Correa takes a high breaking ball and then just misses a meatball that he flies to left.  Two out.

Reddick needs to make Moore work here and takes a first pitch fastball over the inside corner, but then pops the next pitch to left but GAMEL DROPS IT.

That would have been a five pitch inning.  Yuli digs in, time to make them pay.  But instead he grounds out the first pitch to second.

So, six pitch inning.  The Astros have been letting Moore off the hook all game.

Astros lead 2-1, headed to the bottom of the sixth.

A few thoughts:

STOP HANGING FUCKING MEAT TO SEAGER!

Yuli swung at a pitch that was closer to hitting him than being a strike.

Segura laces a leadoff triple splitting the gap to left center field.

Alonso takes two pitches and sharply grounds foul down the first base line.  Strike 2 on a good curveball that dove off the plate.  Lance doesn't have K since the third inning.  Harris and Liriano warming up.  Alonso fouls off a fastball on the outside corner and then lines one foul down the first base side.  Finally swings over a beautiful curve that Lance buries over the plate.  Big strikeout.

Cano steps in and lines the first pitch, a fastball up and away, to left for a basehit, tying the game.  Fuck that guy.

Stassi back out to talk to Lance.  2-2, Cano on first.  One out.

Nelson Cruz up and takes a low fastball.  Then grounds one up the middle, runners on first and second with one out.

Hinch out, and calls in Liriano.  Tough exit for Lance but overall an encouraging return to the big leagues.

Despite this inning, lance looked more like early season lance. Hopefully next time out he can build on this start

Two on, one out for Liriano.

And Seager is up.

First pitch swinging on an inside pitch, then takes a slider away.  1-1.  Cues one to third that Bregman collects and steps on the bag for the first out.

Runners on first and second, two out.

Liriano out - HE DID IT AGAIN HE GOT THE LEFTY OUT - Harris in.

Bill Brown is such a fucking joy.
Yeah, as long as he's not working with Ashby. Even Brownie could overcome that slack vacuum.

Harris in to face Haniger.  Runners on first and second, two out, tie ballgame.

Haniger takes two pitches that weren't close.  Laces the next pitch up the middle, Cruz beats the throw from Springer as Seager takes the extra base and the Mariners take the lead.  Runners on the corners.

Strom in for a brief chat as Gamel steps in.  Harris bounces the first pitch and then corrals a grounder right back at him.  Gets the force out at first to end the inning, but the damage is done.

Through six, Mariners have 3-2 lead.

Top of the seventh, and Rzepczynski is in to pitch turning Marwin around.

Marwin takes a breaking ball for a strike and then laces a line drive to right field.  Marwin accelerates around the bag and makes a hustle double as the throw comes in on the left field side of second base.

Beltran yet again first pitch swinging and grounds to short.  Marwin can't advance on the force out.  Tying run on second, one out.

Stassi takes a ball in the dirt and another away before grounding one foul down the third base side and then taking a low fastball.  3-1 count.  Stassi then takes a fastball on the inside corner for a full count.  He walks on a low pitch, runners on first and second.

Maybin pinch hits for Kemp and the Mariners go to the pen.

Nick Vincent and his goatee take the mound.  Astros have runners on first and second, one out, Maybin up.

Maybin takes a pitch away for ball one and then another in the same place for a strike.  Another further away for a ball, 2-1.  Todd Kalas is singing "call me Maybin" and it is not working.  Maybin slices one foul, evening up the count at 2-2.  Another outside pitch takes the count full.  Maybin gets rung up on a check swing on an inside fastball.  Fuck.

Springer takes the first pitch just off the outside corner for a ball and then one high to jump out to a 2-0 count.  Meatball cued to center and Springer ties the game!

Fisher pinch runs for Stassi at second to represent the go ahead run.

Bregman takes ball one and then fights an inside pitch off foul.  1-1.  Foul tips the fast ball, now down in the count 1-2.  Low and away and the count is even at 2-2.  Bregman digging in and flails at a low changeup.

But, tie ball game as we go into the stretch!

Martes in for the seventh.  First pitch Zunino pops up foul to the new catcher Centeno.

Heredia fouls off the first pitch and then checks his swing on a high fastball.  Strike three taken on a high backup slider.  Nasty pitch.

Martes follows that shit up with 99 mph on the hands to Segura and another at 98.  0-2.  Deep fly to Springer right in front of the warning track.

Great inning by Martes.  On to the 8th, tied at 3.

Pagan in for the 8th, jumps up 1-2 on Correa who then hooks one deep but foul to left.  Correa then pokes one playable onto the edge of the track in right.  One away.

Reddick lines the first pitch into left field for a basehit.  Two walks, two singles for Reddick on the night.

Yuli takes a strike and then chops one foul.  Fouls another back.  Then pops out to shallow CF.

Marwin takes strike one and then pops out to center.

Headed to the bottom of the 8th.  Still tied at 3.

Martes stays in to face Alonso who works a 3-1 count.  Alonso shatters his bat flying out to Springer, who has moved over to right as Maybin has taken over center and Reddick moved to left field.

Martes fires a fastball just inside to Cano, who then rifles the next pitch just foul down the first base line. Martes gets over a fastball on the outside corner, 1-2 to Cano.  He then pegs Cano on the achilles or heel for a really unfortunate HBP.

The go ahead run is on base, there's one out, and Nelson Cruz steps in.

Cruz takes a fastball for a strike, swings over a high fastball, fouls off a 97 mph heater down the middle, and takes a breaking ball well outside.  Cruz fouls off a low fastball, fouls off a hanging breaking ball on the outside corner, and then whiffs on a fastball on the outside corner.

Two away in the eighth, Seager up.  Hinch jumps up and motions to the pen.

Edwin Diaz in against Beltran.

Beltran lines it to the LF corner, jogs into second with a leadoff double.  NICE JOB SWINGING AT THE FIRST PITCH THIS TIME.

Marisnick into pinch run for Beltran.

Centeno shows bunt and somehow takes a strike on a pitch that nearly hit him in the foot.  He then bunts it foul.  Chops the next pitch foul.  Grounds it up the middle and Snickers gets to third!  Seems to me Jake should have been thrown out but Segura chose to go to first.

Go ahead run on third base.  One out.  Maybin up.

First pitch taken inside.  MAYBIN DOES IT AGAIN.  HOME RUN OFF THE RF FOUL POLE WHAT THE FUCK!!!!

ASTROS UP 5-3, one out.

Springer singles up the middle.

Bregman takes strike one and then grounds to third.  Springer was moving so no double play.

Springer on second, two outs.

Correa takes a 100 mph fastball for a called strike.  Correa lines out on a hard hit ball to right field.

Astros take the lead! 5-3 headed to the bottom of the ninth.

Sexy, sexy double play to get 2 outs.
Then a foul ball that literally landed on top of the screen behind home. Centeno climbed the net to try and get it.

Devenski stays in for the ninth.

Haniger takes strike one on the inside part of the plate and watches ball one outside.  Swings at a nasty changeup for strike 2.  Lays off a similar pitch, it's 2-2.  Fouls back the next offering.  Grounds the ball through the shift between Correa and Marwin.

Tying run at the plate.  No outs.  Gamel up.

Breaking ball gets over for a called strike.  Bounces the next pitch to Correa who STEPS ON THE BAG AND THROWS TO FIRST FOR THE DOUBLE PLAY!

Two outs, none on, Zunino up.  First pitch is a low change.  Devinski steps off and then fires a low fastball for a strike.  Zunino pops up behind the screen foul, 1-2.  Fouls off a 96 MPH fastball on his hands.  BURIES THE COD!  GAME OVER.

SWEEP!  GO ASTROS!

He was supposed to be a really useful pinch runner and defensive outfielder.

But someone on the staff saw an issue in his swing involving correcting his hips and that has made a significant difference.

Maybin's HR was the third-hardest pitch hit for a HR in all of MLB this season.

Diaz provided the power on that one.  In fact, watching the replay, Maybin didn't even take a full cut.

I can hear the conversation now...

Diaz (to Zunino):  You *told* me to throw a fastball...

Zunino:  I didn't tell you to hit the fucking bat with it!

Did ANYONE expect Maybin to hit the ball like this?

Absolutely.  On the day they claimed him I said "I bet Maybin starts hitting game-winning homers on a regular basis"!

Seriously, I never believed the "pinch runner and defensive replacement" stuff.  I fully expected Maybin to take most of the playing time Fisher had been getting.  I'm glad it's working out.

The issue is, Fisher still hits lefthanded, so I'm afraid it may be tempting for Hinch to use him more than he should.  I think Maybin will be taking more playing time from Marisnick than Fisher.

Has his batting average come up at all?  My perception says he's never on base.  It's either a homer or an out, but I don't know for sure.

Batting average:  Career - .256. 2017 Angles - .235.  2017 Astros - .250.

He has 4 hits as an Astro, 3 of which are home runs.

I think Maybin will definitely cut into Marisnick's playing time, but I think the veteran/rookie aspect will outweigh the lefty/righty thing in Hinch's mind and greatly reduce Fisher's time.  Supposedly, Hinch has been a Maybin fan for a long time.

I know Beltran had a big hit last night, but as long as Maybin is hot, I'd play him and it would cut into Beltran's and Fisher's time, not Marisnick's. If the decision was mine, I would have Springer, Reddick, Maybin and Marisnick as my base four players every game to play outfield and DH. Fisher pinch runs and I use Beltran to pinch hit if necessary. But that's just me.

He's sure taken a lot of bags for someone who's never on base.

I hope not. I hope he has become the 5th OFer and first pinch runner. I do concede Maybin and Marisnick are the same player defensively, and there is no need for Jake in the late innings when the OF is Reddick-Maybin-Springer.

Marwin! Just missed a 3 run shot

Jumping in here because I am bored after the off day and want to talk Astros baseball.

Watching Marwin in that AB was funny.  Typical nonchalant (but locked in) look during the at bat and then, on this pitch, his eyes get big, he leans way back on his back foot and a thought bubble appears above his head with the caption "Ima gonna crush this thing".  He looked like a carbon copy of the big boppers on my church league slow pitch softball team.

Wow, great play by Bregman.

He really does well over there.  His ability to track and stay on a squirrelly hop is impressive.

A few thoughts:

STOP HANGING FUCKING MEAT TO SEAGER!

Yuli swung at a pitch that was closer to hitting him than being a strike.

Bill Brown is great on the radio with Sparks.

Agree re: Brown.  He's pretty funny.  He and Sparks have the banter down well but it does not get in the way of their game calling.  I also like that they both feel comfortable enough in their jobs to let there be some silence sometimes so you can hear some of the game action.  Nice touch for the radio.

Top of the seventh, and Rzepczynski is in to pitch turning Marwin around.

I think it's great the Rzepczynski's nickname is "Scrabble".

Martes is a fun guy to watch pitch.

Agree.  You can just see the tools on display.  When he is clearly flustered, it's a bit cringe-worthy but then I keep telling myself that he's only 21 years old.  I can see why Hinch & Co. rave about him so much.

Maybin!!!!

5-3 Astros

Maybin hit that HR on a 100.3mph pitch.  Fastest pitch hit for a HR in the majors this year and in Mariners history (since the StatCast era, anyways).

I never said I wasn't a fan.  I don't expect him back.  I believe he'll be starting in center somewhere while we'll have Springer in center again with Reddick in right and Fisher in left.
