The boys need a win tonight, so break out the good stuff.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Bregman strikes out swinging
Springer is picked off of 1B on a full count
Altuve...has taken two fat pitches right over the middle of the plate...but works the count full...lines out to CF

Healy...3-0...3-1...3-2...grounds to 3B...diving stop by Bregman, makes a strong throw and a good pick by Gurriel, who forgot how many outs there were and ran to the dugout...gotta get three at this level Yuli
Pinder chops out 5-3 on another nice play by Bregman over the bag

I don't understand our insistence on stealing. That's definitely not our strength, and those caught stealings just take pressure off the pitcher. I don't want to give up baserunners without a fight.

Stealing bags is a good thing.  I wish they did more of it.  But you gotta know your limitations too.

And our limitations are extensive. Springer is not a good base stealer. This team has decent overall speed, but no real burners. Altuve, Marisnick, and maybe Fisher are the only guys with anything near plus-plus speed. And their base-stealing instincts aren't exactly Bagwellian. It just seems like a losing proposition with this group.

I guess the Astros don't know that they're allowed to swing at first pitch fastballs right down the middle.

Animal House is closer in time to Gone With the Wind than to a movie released today.

Man I like Stassi behind the plate.  He's so quiet, and funnels the ball towards his chest.  THAT'S how you frame a pitch.

Marwin and Bregman are gonna need a day off. Keuchel is wearing them out tonight.

15 groundball outs so far

B6:

Altuve...0-2...1-2...2-2...full up...flies out F9
Gurriel nearly takes Manaea's head off with a line drive single up the middle
Marwin...0-2...1-2...pops out F5
Gurriel to 2B on a wild pitch...Garneau never got down on it, just sort of "Ole'd" as it went through the wicket
Reddick...3-0...3-1...singles to RCF, Gurriel scores

BoMel out to the mound...Manaea stays in...

Beltran lines out to LCF as Davis stumbles on the liner, but makes the catch

3-0 Astros

Yep.  Ball bounced up and got him pretty good.  Need to get that checked out right away, looked like it was swelling up.

Yeah, but it was nuts: the foul ball bounced off his knee and then ricocheted to his wrist. I don't understand why his knee isn't killing him.

Probably because he's wearing leg guards, but not wrist guards.

Knee has a bit more meat on it. Unless it hits straight on the cap, shouldn't be too bad. Anytime a ball hits your wrist though... that shits painful

Hatcher takes the pea for the A's...

Stassi...3-0...3-1...3-2...flies out F8
Marisnick...0-2...grounds out 5-3

With Springer at the plate, the home plate ump takes a foul ball off his wrist/forearm and has to come out of the game.  We'll be working with three blues from here on out...

Springer grounds out 6-3

3-0 Astros

Boston took Marwin Rule 5 from Cubs and flipped him to Houston on the same day for Marco Duarte. I did not know you could take a Rule 5 and flip him since you have to return him if he is not on your ML roster all year. I guess Houston would have to return him to Cubs if they did not keep him all year.

Correct.  He can be traded, but the same rule applies to the receiving club.

Maxwell, pinch hitting for Garneau...singles to LF

Devo out with a 1-0 count on the hitter, Giles in

Olson, pinching hitting for Davis...full count...grounds into 4-5-3 double play (shift was on, so Bregman was in SS position)

3-1 Astros

Bunch of defensive changes for the A's because of the pinch hitters, but Hatcher still on the hill...

Bregman hammers the ball to 3B, but Chapman gives him a taste of his own medicine with a nice stop...5-3
Altuve singles up the middle
Gurriel grounds out 5-3, Altuve to 2B
Altuve steals 3B
Marwin...3-0...pops out F3 in foul territory by the dugout

3-1 Astros

Radio guys were saying that his first few starts back off the DL he was so sore for the next few days he couldn't even throw a bullpen, but that has abated and he feels 100 percent now.

Pretty uneventful...the inning was shaping up badly for Devo, so he was going to Giles as soon as Giles was ready.  I guess that meant mid-at bat too.  Also implied that had Giles had to work harder in the 8th, he would not have pitched the 9th.
