Triple play in Boston last night
« on: May 03, 2017, 12:26:34 pm »
Situation: Red Sox have Moreland at 2B and Pedroia at 1B with nobody out.  Bradley hits a popup to shallow left, about 25 feet beyond the infield dirt.  SS Hardy drifts back, sits under it, then misses the ball.

Umpires don't call an infield fly but every Sox runner acts like they did.  Hardy throws in to second where Schoop tags Moreland off the bag for the first out.  Schoop then tags second base, forcing out Pedroia who is still standing on first.  Schoop then throws to first for the force play on Bradley who was not running.

Dickstepping by the Sox?  Bad no-call by the umps?  A little of both?

It's a borderline IF call, I'm fine with not making it. My problem was that the umpires weren't on the same page. Second base umpire CLEARLY calls two outs at second - he knows the deal. But I didn't ever see the first base umpire signal the batter out.

I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

What the fuck was the hitter doing?  He should have been standing on 1st.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Right, the 1B ump looked a bit like I did while umpiring little league a couple times.  (For that matter, Hardy looked a lot like I did in little league too.)

The way I see it, Moreland would've been out either way.  With the infield fly he is doubled up off the base; without the infield fly and with the runners going as soon as the ball dropped, he likely would've been dead meat at third, but that at least would've drawn a throw to give Pedroia and Bradley a chance.  Sox ran (stood?) themselves into one, and possibly two, unnecessary outs.

What the fuck was the hitter doing?  He should have been standing on 1st.

The hitter was running, already past 1B and walking back to the dugout when the throw got to 1B.  I assume he never touched 1B and just peeled off when he saw the runner go back there.

As for an IFF call, it definitely should have been called.  Bad call, and bad base running from the hitter for not touching 1B.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Terrible call.  Infield fly rule applies if an infielder is capable of catching the ball with ordinary effort, which was certainly the case in that play.
"Holy shit, Mozart. Get me off this fucking thing."

This and HH.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

Good catch.  Didn't notice that the first couple times I watched it.
