Lead off man Dickerson reaches on a strikeout/wild pitch, and it results in a run on the two out triple by Miller.

And Souza follows with a homer. Giving teams extra outs is not something Musgrove can handle.

That was a damned fine time for Correa to break the slump

He still just 1 for his last 20. He's got to hit a few more before it's not still a slump.

Is the Correa at bat commercial national? Rizzo used to be featured on the commercial in Houston, so not sure if Carlos took his spot or they are regionalizing the ads.

No time soon.  In 3 starts Martes has logged only 12 IP.  He has issued 12 BBs in those 12 IP.

This team's situational hitting fucking sucks.

That's a little strong, don't you think?

RISP: .275 AVG (8th), .742 OPS (14th), 48 RBI (17th)
RISP w/ 2 outs: .339 AVG (1st), .914 OPS (2nd), 25 RBI (T-4th)
Bases loaded: .235 AVG (16th), .653 OPS (20th), 11 RBI (14th)

They're a little worse than average with the bases loaded, but overall they've been good to very good with situational hitting.

I'm not talking numbers, I'm talking mental mistakes.

McCann walks on 5 pitches, the pitcher is all over the place.

Bregman take a ball. Check swings at the same pitch. Swings at another borderline pitch and rolls over in to an easy double play.

Shitty situational hitting.

I can think of dozens of examples in the young season. Also, the Astros have hit in to almost 30 double plays already this year, which is putrid.

And there are at least as many examples of good situational hitting, without which they would probably be .500 or worse.

I guess we have different definitions of what "fucking sucks" means.

And there are at least as many examples of good situational hitting, without which they would probably be .500 or worse.

I guess we have different definitions of what "fucking sucks" means.

"Situational hitting" does not refer to your batting average with runners in scoring position.  It's about altering approach to effectively take advantage of a particular situation.  Things like taking strikes, "productive outs", bunting, moving runners on ground balls, sacrifice flies, etc.  It's about efficiency and getting the most bang for your hitting buck (which includes not striking out and not hitting into double plays).

Sure, but they wouldn't be 13-6 if they didn't already do all of those things in at least an adequate capacity, especially given the way that some of those 13 wins have transpired.  I'm not saying there aren't areas for improvement (e.g. the GIDPs).

Well, likely not...unless they were scoring runs in bunches and on home runs.  The idea of situational hitting is how well you manufacture runs or score runs because you sustained an inning by moving runners, staying out of a double play, not punching out immediately after a leadoff double, etc.  Sure there examples of them doing that well.  But there are also many examples of them doing it poorly.  I haven't looked at numbers, but my instinct is that they are not particularly good at situational hitting, mainly because they haven't had to be.  Are they horrible at it?  Eh...probably not.  But they could use some improvement.

Whenever a team has been horrible at something for an extended time (ie. the Astros and situational hitting), fans will continue to notice it and be disgusted by it even if it's not happening as often.

Now, if you want to talk about something the Astros truly suck at, let's talk base running.

There's probably some truth to that.  But there are examples of the Astros being really bad at some things, like base running.  And it's hard to overlook the aforementioned GIDP.  The Astros lead the majors in that dubious category.  By a lot.  They rank near the bottom in LOBsters too.

To have a lot of LOB and GIDP you have to have a lot of guys on base. Could it be that simple as that?

I don't think there's been an Astros team in the Luhnow era that wasn't pretty damn bad at situational hitting. It seems to be one of those things that raw talent can mask in the regular season but that will fuck us in the playoffs.

Houston would have a lot fewer double plays if Hinch were a little more aggressive on sending runners on 3-2 counts with less than two outs.

Is there an OBP-GIDP stat?

Astros have hit into 28 GIDP...the most in the MLs. The Angels are next at 25.  As I previously reported the Astros are tied for 2nd in .OBP in the AL.  The GIDP # is both leagues.  When it comes to men-stranded, Houston has left 6.53 per game which is the 13th fewest in all of MLB.

Seems like a good recipe for increasing the caught stealing.

You're kidding, right? In my opinion, that's a recipe for running yourself out of a bunch of innings.

No, I'm not kidding.  The Astros are striking out less, but they're hitting a shitload of ground balls right at infielders.

Would you start McCann? Gattis? Marwin? I don't know what to do about the double plays. Hopefully, it was just a streak of bad luck.
