Final Home Game
« on: September 28, 2016, 10:06:55 am »
Thinking about heading over to the yard for Closing Day.  Anyone else interested?
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I went last night, and had already psyched myself for it being my last game of the season.

the personnel losses this team encountered were too much to overcome. the Astros did well to hang in as long as they did.

I absolutely agree. If you would have told me that the Astros would still be alive right up to the last week of the season without Keuchel and McCullers for the last six weeks of the season, I'd have bet money against that, and I don't bet.

Yes. Pretty amazing they will finish with about the same record as last year in which they were amazingly healthy all year.

I was going to joke about Peacock or someone else being injured, but then I remembered that recurring Astro Jed Lowrie, who had started the first month or so blazing hot last year, had that stupid thumb injury, was out for 3 months, and then clearly wasn't himself when he came back. Remember that before Correa came up there was a month or more with Villar as the primary SS. If Lowrie hadn't gotten hurt, he may have slid over to 3B for Correa anyway and still been a productive part of the lineup (with Valbuena at 1B).

But back to the point, yes, the McCullers and Keuchel injuries made it a big uphill climb. Sadly enough, Fiers is your 2016 Astros ERA leader with a 4.48.

I wouldn't mind having him back. He keeps them in a lot of games. Didn't wear out down the stretch.

Of the 4 pitchers with enough qualifying innings on the team he threw the fewest innings per start.

I don't disagree, but he's cheap and he's had success in the past. He'll be around next year.

I think he's arb eligible, so the "cheap" part may change a bit. Probably not a big risk, but you never know when something wacky might happen there.

I hope that we've seen the last of Fiers and Fister.

If he runs out of gas with two months to go, I'm not sure how helpful he is.

I don't think that he necessarily ran out of gas as regressed to the mean with his marginal stuff.
