Did he have to sell the bulldozer?
« on: June 21, 2016, 06:06:08 pm »
"Several professional athletes, including San Francisco Giants pitcher Jake Peavy, Denver Broncos quarterback Mark Sanchez and retired Houston Astros pitcher Roy Oswalt, were cheated out of more than $30 million by an investment adviser in a Ponzi-like scheme, federal investigators said Tuesday."

"All three athletes said they hired Narayan in part because he represented himself as a devout Christian involved in charitable causes and claimed to be a certified public accountant. The SEC says Narayan has never been a CPA."

Link

Good grief, athletes and their money. What kind of numbnuts hand over their cash without doing even the simplest of due diligence (like checking whether someone is a CPA or not)?

Mrs Hawk, who was an actual real life CPA for professional athletes, says her first warnings to clients was "beware of 'financial advisors'".

I just hope he didn't have to close the restaurant.  The Gomez Burger special (delicious if you have 20/20 vision, will give you E.coli if you don't) sounded tasty.

In fact, CPAs at public accounting firms have to make clear that they are not allowed to give investment advice whatsoever.

The worst business experience I've ever had was with a client/partner who insisted on starting every meeting with a discussion of how religious and devoted to the Lord he was. In between was request to steal drawings and other proprietary data and unending dishonesty with a little racism thrown in for spice.

It cost me nine months and tens of thousands of dollars to be rid of them.

I run from anyone who wants to inject religion into business. When they say: "I'm a Christian so I do business accordingly", I hear: "I'm a Charlatan and will take you for everything I can".

Christians certainly don't have the monopoly on being crooks.  And not all financial planners are either. But as the missus would explain, "I'm your accountant. your paying me to account for your money. Your financial "advisor" only makes money when he talks you into spending it". And she said "I can't tell you how many times I've told players 'I don't care what your financial advisor told you, you can't do that, it's illegal."

Just my experience, but the people I have met and admired as Christians have shared at least one trait - they don't have to remind me how Christian they are every five minutes.

Yes, but the side dish you get with it is actually tastier.

Yep.

I'm not bagging on Christians, the "Christian Con" is common in the U.S. because Christianity is the dominant religion. I have friends in the Middle East who tell me the same thing about Muslims pushing religiosity as a way for business advantage. They wisely stay away.

I'm sure there's a Buddhist and Hindu equivalent.

I've never met a Buddhist who talks about religion. They're just not evangelical that way.

I think most Hindus would like to tell you about Vishnu, but they can't get their arms around how they should.

They'd say more about Kali, but they get tongue tied.

Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him a super calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

Doug Brocail lost all the money he earned as a player because his brother managed his finances and embezzled it all.  Sucks.  At least Brocail has a good job as a coach.
