Visiting Cooperstown/Hall of Fame
« on: June 20, 2016, 10:04:59 am »
My family (me, wife, 7-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter) are visiting New York & Connecticut on vacation this summer, and plan to stop by Cooperstown and the Hall of Fame as part of our drive across New York.

We plan to arrive in Cooperstown one evening and spend the night, have all day the next day, then stay the night there again before heading on to the next part of our trip. I could probably spend all day at the HOF, and my son is probably good for spending a fair amount of time there as well. Daughter (and perhaps wife) will be looking for other activities.

Any tips/suggestions regarding the visit -- where to stay, alternative activities for the ladies, etc.?

I cannot add a thing since I haven't been up there myself but it is a trip I want to make someday so please share your highlights when you get back.

There are shops and such in downtown Cooperstown, but most of the stores are baseball related. There are not many hotels in the area and they fill up fast, but if you look online there are a lot of cabins, garage apts and flats downtown that are available for rent.

Other attractions are:
The Otesaga Hotel
Sal's Pizzeria
Dream's Park
Doubleday Field
"Buenos Dias, shitheads."

There's a big summer opera festival there called Glimmerglass if that's something the womenfolk would be interested in.

There's plenty of outdoorsy stuff for the wife and daughter.  It's truly a beautiful part of the country.

Grab breakfast at the Short Stop Cafe.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. Looks like me (and maybe my son) will be able to spend a full day at the Hall, while my wife and daughter can check it our for a shorter time and then enjoy the nature of the area.

We're staying at this place -- http://terrace-motor-inn.com/ -- which is apparently right on a lake and even has canoes, pedalboats, etc. that you can check out. That sort of thing, plus walking around the town, should be enough to find something for everyone to enjoy.

If you follow Astros County on Twitter, you might reach out to him.  He used to work there.
Always ready to go to a game.

There's a summer opera in Cooperstown, the Glimmerglass, that's one of the major summer operas, comparable to Santa Fe.  It was very memorable.  You should also re-read Deerslayer or The Last of the Mohicans.

He's a big favorite of mine.

Just to follow up on this... As noted above, we stayed at this place -- http://terrace-motor-inn.com/ -- which was, indeed, right on a lake, and had canoes, pedalboats, etc. to check out. However, we ran out of time and didn't get a chance to use them.

We drove on a Tuesday afternoon, had dinner in town, then went back to the hotel and crashed. We got up Wed. morning and basically did the HOF all day -- arrived around 9:45 (enough time to let any right-when-it-opens lines to die down) and just happened into a 10 a.m. guided tour of the plaques, which was a cool way to start. When that was done (30 min or so), we checked out the plaques some more, then headed to the museum.

We did an hour or two of the museum, left for lunch for an hour or so, then came back and did probably 2-3 more hours of the museum -- as much as our little ones could take. (I probably could have spent a little more time looking closely at each display, but we did get through the entire museum.) Not a ton of Astros stuff on display, as you might guess (and most of what was out was Nolan Ryan stuff). I think my wife took photos of just about every Astros-related thing we saw.

Aside from the obvious big stuff, my favorite single item on display was Pudge's Astros jersey from the night he broke the MLB record for games caught -- which just so happened to be a few hours after my son was born (we watched that game in the hospital that night). I got a photo of him with that display, which was fun for me.

After the HOF, we had dinner in town (New York Pizzeria, which I highly recommend), then walked around town a bit checking out shops and such. Went back to the hotel that night and left in the morning for the next leg of our trip. I think we easily could have spent another day or two there, either returning to the HOF (me), enjoying the lake (the rest of the family), or checking out a few other things in the area (the Farmers Museum looked interesting). Overall, a good trip; thanks to everyone here for the tips!

Thanks for sharing. Did you guys fly or drive and if you flew what airport do you fly into? Any other towns or sites outside of Cooperstown that you really enjoyed? I'm pushing for a trip up there, maybe next summer or fall.

Sounds like you had a great trip. Too bad there is not more Astros stuff.

We flew from IAH to Buffalo (and back), as part of a wider trip. We flew into Buffalo, spent a couple of days with friends who live about an hour outside of the city, then drove to Connecticut and spent a couple of days with some of my wife's family, then stopped in Cooperstown on our drive back across the state. From Cooperstown, we headed back to Buffalo, spent a full day at Niagara Falls, then flew back to Texas the next day.

There might be a more convenient airport to fly into than Buffalo, if Cooperstown is the focus of your trip, but it seemed fine to me. The drive wasn't bad, and the scenery was reasonably nice (certainly different than Texas).

Niagara Falls ended up being the highlight of the trip for our kids. If we'd had more time, I would have liked to explore Buffalo a little (at least take in a minor league game), and Toronto as well (right across the border). But we were already squeezing a lot in as it was.

I think y'all would have plenty of choices if you wanted to do a little driving around western/central NY. Or, you could focus on the eastern side and do NYC and all that.
