Who the Heck is Matt Bower?

A 23rd round pick last year made his debut yesterday at Lancaster where he went 5 IP with 1 Hit, O runs, 2BBs and 10Ks. A tall, rangy LHer he has 38Ks and 8BBs in 24.2 IP this season.

Who indeed?

I wonder how he made it down to the 23rd round. Especially a southpaw.

I wonder how he made it down to the 23rd round. Especially a southpaw.

He did struggle with his control throughout his Huskies career (32 walks, 15 WPs in 80 innings over his three years). So that could possibly have dinged him in the draft. The Astros may have made some mechanical adjustments and he's greatly improved in that area as a pro but the problem hasn't entirely gone away--he has uncorked 5 WPs this year already in addition to the 8 walks.

It is nice to see him and Evan Grills (another lefty) doing well in starting roles so far this season.
