We're at the d&t drive in in the Heights. 50 beers on tap, country music and the Astros on tv, and Fritos pie. Fiers still can't get an out in the 2nd.

Picking up where we left off last night:

Betts singles to LF, advances to second on a pick-off attempt that Marwin can't snag. He did something to his right wrist diving back into the bag, but he stays in the game.
Pedroia walks.
Ortiz singles (on a 1-2 pitch) to RCF, Betts scores, Pedroia advances to 3rd.
Ramirez strikes out swinging.
Shaw strikes out swinging on a full-count change-up.
Holt grounds out to Fiers on the first pitch.

RedSox lead 1-0. 27 pitches or so for Fiers.

Oh good, we get to play from behind again. I think I'd better go get a beer.

That one run inning lowered our 1st inning ERA.

This is peculiar Fritos pie, with pulled pork and a cheese sauce. The first beer was a cream ale with coffee and vanilla, but nobody told me. It was dreadful. The second is better.

Altuve singles to LF on the first pitch. Bagwell is my all-time favorite Astro, but I could see Altuve moving into that position someday.
Springer grounds deep into the hole, Holt has to eat the ball. Altuve advances to 2nd.
Correa gets jammed and pops out to SS, continuing his dreadful streak wRiSP.
Rasmus pops up to 1B.
Tucker pops up to C.

No runs, 0-3 wRISP, 2 LOBsters. I guess I should be happy that they made contact.

RedSox lead 1-0 after 1.

Maybe if you buy Scott Baio a beer and leave it up on the chalk board wall, the Astros could start hitting above the Mendoza line with RISP. not the vanilla cream ale though.

Oh god, Chris Young is leading off. He'll probably hit an 8-run homer.

Young strikes out looking at another change-up on the outside corner. I don't know if Fiers can survive throwing changes all day, but it's working right now.
Bradley grounds out to Altuve.
Vazquez grounds out to Correa.

Boston leads 1-0 after 1 1/2. Fiers at 42 pitches or so.

Only 0 for 2 w/RISP that inning.  Baby steps.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

Gomez pops out to SS out behind 3B.
Gonzalez with a great drag bunt down the 1B line for a hit.
Valbuena with a sharply-hit double into the RF corner. Gonzalez advances to 3rd.
Castro grounds to 2B, Gonzalez scores, Valbuena advances to 3rd. No hit, but at least he got the run in.
Altuve looks at strike 3.

1 run scored, 0-2 wRISP, 1 LOBster.

All tied up 1-1 after 2.

Betts flies out to Springer in RF on a running catch.
Pedroia grounds into the hole, Correa can't field it cleanly, don't know if he would have gotten Pedroia even if he did get it. Ruled an infeld single.
Ortiz flies out to LF.
Ramirez flies out to the warning track in RF.

0 runs, 1 hit. Fiers at 53 pitches.

Still tied 1-1 after 2 1/2.

Shaw grounds out to 2B.
Holt strikes out looking on a FB at the knees.
Young strikes out looking on a curve.

Still tied 1-1 after 3 1/2. Lost track of Fiers' pitch count, but that was a pretty efficient inning, probably 12-13 pitches.

Vazquez lines out to RF.
Betts lines out to LF on the first pitch.

No runs, no hits. Fiers at 75 pitches, and he has really settled in nicely.

Tied 1-1 after 4 1/2.

Valbuena walks. A baserunner!
Castro pops out to RF. Ofer his last 14.
Altuve hits a FC to 3B, Valbuena out at 2nd, Altuve on 1st. Nice play by Shaw, looked like it might get through.
Springer hits a liner up the middle, Pedroia knocks it down, but there's no play. Altuve advances to 2nd, Springer on 1st.
Correa HBP. Grazed his jersey, really, but we'll take it. Bases loaded with 2 outs.
Rasmus fooled by two breaking pitches, but then Buchholz throws a fastball and Rasmus crushes it for a grand slam!
Tucker grounds out to 1B.

4 runs, 1-1 wRISP, 0 LOBsters. Not a line I thought I'd type.

Astros lead 5-1 after 5.

Mrs. Happy called that grand salami by Rasmus. I can't believe that he didn't throw another curveball. He tried to sneak an inside piece of cheese past Rasmus that got too much plate.

Pedroia grounds down the line past Valbuena, Rasmus kicks it around, Pedroia winds up at 2nd.
Ortiz strikes out swinging.
Ramirez walks, Pedroia advances to 2nd. Please don't fuck this up.
Shaw singles on a liner to RF, Pedroia advances to 3rd, Ramirez advances to 2nd. Bases loaded with 1 out.

That's the end of the day for Fiers. Harris coming in to relieve.

Holt flies out to LF. Pedroia scores from 3rd, other runners remain at their bases.
And, of course, here comes Chris Young. But he grounds out 5-1, and I can breathe again.

1 run scored.

Astros lead 5-2 after 5 1/2. Nice job by Fiers to recover after a tough beginning.

Buchholz comes back out for the 6th. I sure hope that's a mistake.

Gomez fouls off a lot of pitches, winds up looking at strike three.
Gonzalez works the count full, hits a deep drive to RCF, and Betts makes a jumping catch at the fence. Damn.

Buchholz out, Layne (LHP) in.

Valbuena stays in to face the leftie and winds up working a walk.
Castro looks at strike three.

No runs, 0-0 wRISP, 1 LOBster.

Astros lead 5-2 after 6.

Neshek in to pitch the 7th.

Bradley strkes out swinging.
Vazquez singles up the middle.
Betts grounds into a FC up the middle 1-6. Correa's throw to 1st is too late to catch the speedy Betts.
Pedroia grounds out 6-3.

No runs.

Astros lead 5-2 after 6 1/2.

Wow...Altuve lollygagged that.  Don't see that often.

Yeah, upon further review, Pettis was telling him "up".  Altuve jogged down to 1B, but Pettis had his head up his ass.

Noe Ramirez (RHP) in to pitch for Boston.

Altuve hits the ball in no-man's land between Betts and Bradley in RCF. Ball falls between them and Altuve decides to go for three. He breaks it down going into 3rd and is called out on the tag. If he had actually run out of the box instead of walking, or slid into 3rd, he'd be safe without a doubt. Instead they're having to challenge the play, and the the verdict is... OUT! Dumb fuck. And fuck Pettis, too, for not telling him to get down.
Springer walks.
Correa with a bad-hop ground ball single off of Shaw at 3B. Springer advances to 2B. Altuve's ghost runner scores. Or not.

Ramirez out, Roenis Elias (LHP) in to relieve.

Rasmus walks, Springer advances to 3rd, Correa advances to 2nd. Bases loaded with one out.
Gattis pinch-hitting for Tucker. And guess what? He strikes out looking.
Gomez grounds out 5-4 on the first pitch.

0 runs, 0-2 wRISP, 3 LOBsters.

Astros lead 5-2 after 7.

Maybe this is a ridiculous, old fashioned notion, but would it kill AJ Hinch to get off his ass and yell at the umps on calls like that 3rd strike to Gattis? That's ridiculous.

No, but if you include Gattis, and add all three of their averages together, you get a respectable .282.  They don't have a HR, but they have driven in one run.

Giles in to pitch the 8th.

Ortiz gets jammed on the fists and still manages to dump the ball into RF in front of Springer for a single.
Ramirez looks at a great slider from Giles for strike three.
Shaw flies out to Rasmus in LCF, where Gomez tries to decapitate him. Really, Gomez was calling it, and Rasmus probably should have pulled off. Anyway, it's an out.
Holt singles past Valbuena, Ortiz advances to 2nd.
Rutledge pinch-hits for Young, singles down the LF line, Ortiz scores, Rutledge just beats the throw to 2nd.
Bradley flies out to Springer in RCF.

1 run.

Astros lead 5-3 after 7 1/2 innings.

Holt moves out to LF, and Rutledge stays in at SS. And I'm down to my last Lost Gold IPA, so they'd better nail this thing down.

Gonzalez doubles to LCF.
Valbuena hits the ball to damn near the same place in LCF. Gonzalez scores, Valbuena cruises into 2nd.
Castro grounds out 3U, Valbuena advances to 3rd.
Altuve with a rule-book double into the bullpen in RCF. Valbeuna scores.
Springer chops out 4-3, Altuve advances to 3rd.
Correa intentionally walked. Runners on 1st and 3rd.
Rasmus, who must be wondering why they walked Correa to get to him, beats the shit out of a ball into the RF corner for a double and drives in Altuve. Correa stops at 3rd.
Gattis grounds out 5-3.

3 runs, 3-6 wRISP, 2 LOBsters.

Astros lead 8-3 after 8.

Day drinking means not getting off the horse until you go to bed. Hangovers at 9 PM suck.
The Astros make you want to drink all day and all night.

So I'm good. Time for more rum...
