Gaseous bilge emanating from the House that Ruth Built
« on: April 06, 2016, 09:51:19 am »
"So I guess Dellin's only option is to try to hit him," Girardi said  "I don't think that's what baseball wants. If it hit him, they would have called him out — how about that? They would have called [Correa] out. That doesn't make any sense to me, because now you're asking one of our players to assault theirs."

"Do it," DeMuth said. "Throw it into the runner's back. Because then what's happening? He is impeding. He would be out, yeah."

So they are protesting the entire series, which will cover any past and future impediments to glorious Yankee winnings.

casual observation tells me that probably 90% of runners to first are outside of the baseline. That doesn't make it right but if it is never enforced "selective enforcement" puts the umpire in a difficult position. therefore, the "hit them with the ball" makes perfect sense.

After watching it a few times, it looks like he was fucking up that throw regardless of Correa's position relative to the path.

I was always taught make the throw.  If he's in the way and you drill him in the back, fine.  But don't alter your throw because of the runner.  The simple fact is, Betances fucked up.  He never had a grip on the ball, he panicked, and threw the ball 37 feet in the air into RF.  Correa's position had nothing to do with it.  Girardi is pissed that his pitcher fucked up, but he's just blowing off steam.  I guarantee you that if given the choice of "suck it up" or "sure, we'll uphold your protest, but now we'll institute a rule that says anytime a player is running inside the baseline, he will be called out whether he actually interferes with anything or not", Girardi would chose the former.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I was watching Pedro, Piazza and Harold Reynolds dissect the play last night and that was exactly Pedro's point.  The way the pitcher released the throw it was wildly unlikely it would land at first base, and thus Correa wasn't interfering with anything.  You can't interfere with a throw that goes nowhere near you.

I've never played an inning of competitive ball and even I know this.  Sure as heck every ML'er does as well. Girardi is just making himself look like an ass. Even his 1B WHO WAS A PART OF THE PLAY disagrees with the straw man Girardi is trying to perpetuate.

If I were Girardi I would be protesting solely on the fact that Dana DeMuth is a terrible umpire.  Yesterday's strike zone was abominable.

Valbuena definitely should've been called out looking before he hit the 2-run single.
