Injury Updates
« on: December 07, 2015, 08:21:57 pm »
Luhnow apparently was handing out medical info today:

Neshek--recovering from surgery on that stress fracture suffered in his right foot last spring that caused him to pitch in pain throughout season/expected to be ready for ST.

Valbuena--bunion surgery on left foot/bothered him during season.

Feldman--cleared to throw after the shoulder thingy/"hopefully" ready for ST.

Peacock--has already begun throwing after that back surgery in August/expected to be ready for ST.

Gomez--chilling in the Dominican as intercostal heals.

Drellich 1 and Drellich 2

I am oddly excited about Feldman's return.

Me too.  I think he's a great 4th starter on this team.  Can we fucking get rid of Peacock.  Has he ever done anything to justify a spot on the 40 man roster?

Peacock had a few good starts towards the end of 2014, but he's another one of those guys who may have a place on a 70-win team, but not on a team that's good enough to win a pennant.

Marwin just started hitting for the first time this offseason after that left hand/wrist injury last September.

Interesting.  That would give them the ability to start the year as Singleton at first, White at DH then Gattis comes up mid-April and replaces the one struggling.  Wonder if this ends any chance of him becoming the backup catcher with no time in spring training

If Reed tears it up in the Spring and Singleton struggles, any chance they don't wait for the Super 2 deadline to pass?

He certainly would spend the 2 weeks in AAA to start the year in order to insure an extra year of control.  So likely it would require Singleton to struggle in early April (and possibly White as well to struggle) in order for Reed to get the call.

If Reed is "tearing it up" and is ready to be a Major Leaguer, I can't see them worrying about his Super 2 status.  Like a lot of player strategies, this may have been a concern when the team was rebuilding and trying to build a strategy, but they are no longer in "project stage" and they should expect to compete for the World Series and can't afford to give up games in April.  If Reed, or anyone else, can help the Astros win games, expect them to be in the lineup.

A lot of who makes the team will depend on whether they open with 12 or 13 pitchers too.  13 pitchers means either Tucker or Marisnick start at AAA much less who plays DH and 1b.

Was there really talk about Gattis as the backup catcher?  I remember talk that he might do it in rare situations, but would they really want him doing it a couple of times a week.

Luhnow said that Gattis was not in the mix to be the team's back-up catcher.

Just was speculation based on Gattis mentioning that he wanted to play more at either catcher, first base or the outfield.  But apparently Luhnow was never on board with the catcher thing.

So this might be why Neshek struggled down the stretch.  That's naaasty.

Peacock says he's fully healthy for first time in several years but struggles with location in his first start of the spring today (3 walks and 3 hits allowed in 1 2/3 vs Pirates).

I'm not sure I understand the fascination with Peacock.  He seems like a AAAA pitcher.  If the Astros need Peacock this year, this team is in trouble.  Peacock has an option.  He'll start the season in the minors and my guess is that he gets released or traded sometime this season.

MRI showed no "structural damage" and he's going to rest a few days before getting back on the mound, according to mctaggart story. Implied he may not be ready to start the season.

Stassi: hamate bone injury on left hand, back to Houston to have it checked out.

Gregerson: threw BP yesterday and is expected to pitch in his first game either Wed or Thurs.

Gattis: no word yet on when he'll see his first game action.

If you want the exact language of how to calculate service time:

Those Player rights expressly set forth in the Basic Agreement for which a Player’s eligibility is dependent upon credited Major League service will be determined as follows:

(1) One full day of Major League service will be credited for each day of the championship season a Player is on a Major     League Club’s Active List. A total of 172 days of Major League credited service will constitute one full year of credited service. A Player may not be credited with more than one year of credited service, 172 days, in one championship season. Major League service will be computed commencing with the date of the first regularly scheduled championship season game, through and including the date of the last regularly scheduled championship season game. This rule shall apply uniformly to all Players and all Clubs notwithstanding differences in a particular Club’s schedule.

(2) For purposes of calculating credited service, a Player will be considered to be on a Club’s Active List if:

(a) placed on a disciplinary suspension by a Club, the Senior Vice President, Standards and On-Field Operations or the Commissioner, or on the Disabled List; or

(b) called to active military duty for up to two years or if called to emergency duty by the National Guard for a period of up to thirty days.

Now, I'm sure I'll get run outta here for my next question, but gotta ask it.  Is there any chance Lance isn't hurt at all and this is merely a creative way to push back the start of his season without hurting him in the wallet, nor having to answer any questions about it?

I suppose there's a chance, but (1) he has already had to answer questions about it, and (2) they've indicated that he is only expected to miss his first two starts, which wouldn't be a very significant hit to the wallet.

I don't think there is a conspiracy but I do think they may be taking a more conservative approach because of their plan to already limit his innings this year.

Yeah, I think they're just being conservative with him.  I don't think there's any conspiracy or any scheme other than just "better safe than sorry".

Exactly.

Gattis will start his rehab stint at Corpus Christi. May have been mentioned elsewhere but the Hooks have a 6-game homestand to start the season beginning April 7.

According to the beats, mild right ankle sprain was the reason for Marisnick's exit from tonight's game.

Lance McCullers will pitch 2-3 innings tonight at Corpus Christi. Also, Gattis will DH in that game. Maybe his last before activation.

ETA:

Gattis activated, Matt Duffy sent to Fresno (per tweets).

Maybe I'm late seeing this and perhaps it was covered ad nauseum on the broadcast tonight but...

McCullers won't make scheduled start for CC tomorrow because of "lingering recovery issues".

Brian McTaggart ‏@brianmctaggart 4m4 minutes ago
McCullers threw in the bullpen today with no problems and is scheduled to do so again Friday. Gattis caught him today.

Max Stassi -- remember him? -- is close to getting into games in extended spring training.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

After that rehab start on Saturday in El Paso for the Grizzlies, McCullers might rejoin the Astros as soon as next week in Boston (says Hinch).

McTaggart also says Stassi was "expected" to be in the lineup for the first time tonight for Fresno (must've been a last minute scratch as Roberto Pena is doing the catching tonight for the Grizzlies) and will catch Lance on Saturday.

Stassi debuted tonight for Fresno, went 0-3 at the plate while catching Brady Rodgers CG shutout.
