Also per Twittersphere, LJ Hoes back to Baltimore for cash considerations.

Another trade or a free agent signing imminent?

Here's the return for Lowrie.  AA relief pitcher.   Seems solid, but not a threat to end up on the 40 man this year.

Sounds like the Astros kind of pitcher

Quote
Brendan McCurry had a 40% K% at AA in 16.2 innings this year. 47.5% GB%. Other teams top 20 prospects .187 vs him.

This is a large leap, but maybe a deal that brings Frazier as well as Chapman is in the works.

That would be a lot of prospects to give up for Frazier when improving the bullpen and rotation seem the priorities right now.

Less than the return last time (Carter, Stassi, Peacock) but maybe McKurry will rack up as many K's as Karter.

Marwin/Valbuena 3rd base platoon?
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Unless they bring another 3rd sacker I'd say that's the plan. First base needs to be more of a priority now though

Is White at 3rd not an option at all?

Both Duffy & White can play 3B, but especially in White's case the defense will be average or worse.  Both are better suited to 1B and White may be best suited to DH.

Looks like McCurry is already on the Astros Top 30 List (at #30).  White bumped up to #29 and Kyle Smith bounced off the list.

I really think they're counting on one of Reed or White stepping up there.

Honestly, I hate losing Lowrie for a piece that (likely) won't help in '16. I hope this is setting up another trade or a signing.

It did open up a spot on the 40-man, so something will happen in the next few days.

More Lowrie on trade: "I signed the three-year deal here thinking I'd be here for those three years."
https://mobile.twitter.com/brianmctaggart/status/669555189909602304?p=v

"We acquired Jed to play," A's GM David Forst said. "Exactly where, we have some time to figure that out. He's too good an offensive player not to be in there somewhere."

Lowrie has expressed a desire to Forst and manager Bob Melvin to remain at one position. Whether that happens might depend on what other moves the A's make this offseason. Currently Marcus Semien is slotted at shortstop and Brett Lawrie is at third base.

"There's plenty of time for us to figure things out," Forst said. "He may end up getting to do that. The nice thing for us is he really can play all over the infield."

I don't think they make this deal without being close to making another.

Not sure why folks think there is another shoe that has to drop here.  Jed really didn't have a position left on the team.  Also clears 7.5 million from the payroll which can be used elsewhere

Exactly. I assumed either Lowrie or Valbuena would be traded this winter. Considering how Lowrie's May-October went (and his injury history), I'm a little surprised the Astros were able to trade him without eating some cash.

The only future move I could see being related to this one at all is one that uses up Jed's vacated 40-man spot. Probably a reliever.

I'm sorry to see Lowrie go, he was one of the best hitters on the club when healthy.

Yes, and his position was 3b.

Hope something else is coming.
